If your not going to reward r&d mission runners with a chance to get a BPO, then perhaps the dialog with research agents should be changed from..
"Will you head up my research project" to "lets make datacores together - just you and me"
better suiting the current system. In fact these agents might be renamed "Datacore Agents".
I suppose my frustration is obvious, and perhaps my figuring this out now is partially to blame. I spent quite some time working on my faction R&D corp standings, isk on skill books and time building those skills hoping for a shot at my very own BPO.
I understand that these skill can be used for invention and production, and in that respect it is not a complete waste.
I also realize that you no doubt had reason to make this change. Perhaps because mega-corporations tended to be the majority benifactors?
perhaps you would consider other possible solutions to this issue? a cap on per-corp tickets maybe?

I realize this would be categoricly appropriate for the "Missions & Explorations" Forum, but I think the audience here is more attuned/affected by this.
I think it is also important to note that, given reconsideration or not, making this more clear "In Game" is appropriate. I had no idea this change had been made until i decided to look into it more.
I've been told there were numerous forum discussions - I very rarely read these forums.
I assume there were notes in a patch - I missed it.

The lottery is dead and invention is alive, it actually provides an entire profession for inventors etc, instead of just a simple, put your ticket in process. Much better IMO, and apparently alot of people think so judging by what happened post-trinity there must be thousands upon thousands of inventors out there.
Datacores for quite a while were the best hands off money making thing out there, but not so much anymore, being as it's hands off the supply doesn't cut back when the prices fall.

Thanks to the wonders of meta-gaming such a limitation would have absolutely no meaning whatsoever.
I much prefer invention to a simple lottery. It's more engaging, requires more of my thought energy, and ultimately more rewarding as I have an effect on the process. When it was a lottery, all I could do was grumble about not getting a BPO. What fun. IMO, invention is much better and I wouldn't go back for anything.

I, for one, agree with raylon, and a number of other posts regarding this very issue. You see when I started dumping months into science skill training, began crutching lame-o courier missions endlessly, invention didnt fricking exist. So here is where Im upset about invention specifically: it like the lotto system has no gauranteed out come, Bpo's have been replaced with shotty bpcs will low me pe, whilst I would have been eligble for a BPO that I could prefect the me pe. ok So the invention system would have been better had it been implemented in the begining, however it wasnt. and now no one can make money with r&d cause the competition has gone thru the roof, and most inventions come at a loss anyways. If im mistaken please prove me wrong. One is as likely to fail as succeed as far as I've been experienced. Running a pos just to make use of 10m+ sp in science seems like a waste of time and isk. I personally feel like ccp owes me money for the time I've lost training those skills, cause had I known that invention was the system I'd inevitably be training/mission running for, I'd have worked up my combat skills instead. Killing rats in o.o is far more profitable than that shotty bpc, you spent half a year training to get to the ability to have a chance in hell at inventing.

In other words, change the damn dialog to "lets make datacores together - just you and me"
Have Fun with all those courier missions nooB, oh and don't forget, those datacores will be worth it someday, when all the other suckas that are able to use lvl4 rd agents quit, so you actually make some money off your hard work.

Or you just read the release notes, the guides, or the dev blogs... And then you wouldn't be griping about a change a year late...

Ok, so your firm on the notion that research and development agents, which no longer do any research, or development - should continue to suggest that they do so. furthermore, if you lack the time to pour through the endless manutia of development blogs, unofficial user guides and countless patches - you made your own bed?
im sorry - im just not convinced that my time making real life money has to be curtailed to account for something that should be obvious *WITHIN THE GAME*
are you all &%@#$ daft?

in fact you have giving my point crystal clarity - I SPENT A @#$%&* YEAR NOT KNOWING THIS.
god i wish i had the time you did - BUT I DONT. so i, albeit sorely, request that this sort of thing be covered in game.
can you dig it?

I'm confused on what your problem is. Seems like it's semantics. You know what they do and do not do.

Edited by: raylon on 22/04/2008 14:35:59 I'm going to give some more detail which might explain better my frustration.
The past couple months I've been able to focus on my R&D agents (Lai Dai, Kaalakiota) for a couple reasons. I got my faction up to where I could use 3 level 3 R&D agents with Electronic Engineering; And i got my Electronic Engineering skill up to the appropriate level.
Combined I gained approx. 150 RP's per day.
I was focusing on this because of the chance to win a BP so almost every day I made the round trip to each agent to double my RP's.
For two months.
Considering that I am capable of completing most L4 missions alone in my drake.. you might see where my time might have been better spent?
There is no doubt in my mind that other poor, misinformed individuals are, at this very moment, doing the same thing.

Look at it this way. Instead of wasting your time for no benefit at all (T2 BPO Lottery) you wasted your time for a very small but constant benefit (datacores)

The guy has a valid point.
if your a relatively new player...you shouldnt have to dive through forums ..unofficial guides...and old patch notes that may have come out before you started playing the game to realize something is differnet than the way the in-game notes suggest.
Sometimes ccp is really slow in updating things in game. Errors with item descriptions...tutorials out of date(they fixing that finally) etc.

Edited by: Van Hubern on 23/04/2008 21:34:51 I agree with you, raylon, that those of us who started playing the game even a few months ago were given a rulebook and tutorials that were no longer accurate. I had to spend hours going through the forums and fansites, trying to figure out what the rules actually were.
I also note that there are still players today who are absolutely convinced that the old BPO lottery is still working, others who are not sure.
After reading your post today, though, I clicked on the Player Guide link, and am happy to say that changes have at last been made to that guide. And I have run through most of the new tutorials, and found them to be much more helpful than the ones I learned with a few months ago.
So I think the problem we had with figuring out just what the rules really are, is now being addressed. Thank you to the people working on this.

I absolutely agree the names and descriptions should be changed.
I started my career as a RnD guy and spent many many hours doing mind-killing hauler missions to be able to get lvl3/4 RnD agent access. I know the correct information is out there, but it could be made clearer, especially as many site I read about BPO's and T2 BP stuff were out of date.
now im many months behind on my pvp skills and am fully regretting my previous decisions, made on hazy-at-best information.

Edited by: Zifrian on 26/04/2008 04:53:11 Sorry, when I first heard about T2 BPO's it was followed by the statement that "they no longer do it though, it's now done with invention". There was a tutorial to invent things too so I at least had an idea. Plus there are people you can talk to in help channels.
I still don't see the problem other than being semantics. It's been invention for some time now. Why you don't know this doesn't have anything to do with the names of the agents or some text they talk to you about.
