Towards the end of nearly all given missions I find myself surrounded by frigs. I'm lazy and my tank is fine - so I start off with battleships, we're not here to talk strategy (ganking the frigs from far away when they have 0 transversal as most people do.)
What will actually pop frigs faster (assuming equal skills), t2 lights or t2 meds.
This question isn't faction specific, more "overall." I've been using hammerhead II's for god knows how long and have never thought to question the logic.
Someone be a doll and answer a stupid question :)

Against the 30k frigates (the ones that web and scram) and spider drones, the Hobgoblin IIs are faster. I cannot tell any appreciable difference against the easier frigates. The Hobgoblins seem a trifle faster, but not if you count the time needed to recall the Hammerhead IIs you were using against the cruisers and BSs. ------------

T2 mediums if you have high drone skills (and esp if your using a omnidirectional tracking link)
though whats even faster with the proper skills is ogre2 with 2 or 3 omnidirectional tracking links (they can even kill spider drones) |

Medium drones do more than fine on frigates and Hammerheads don't have any issues to my experience. If you really want the frigs to pop much faster, then see if you can find a spare mid slot and use a target painter. I went for target painter spec skill back then on my Nightmare due to torp launchers. You can really see the hit difference on the scrambling and spider drones, when using a painter :)

For the real frigates (5-10k and the like), all drones will be about the same, maybe mediums being the fastest. Heavies will kite them and pretty much instapop or two volley them, and medium drones will do something similar with quicker time to target. For the 30k frigs though, good skilled t2 lights are your best bet, barring a web, TP, or drone tracking mods.

I dont use omnidirectional tracking thingymajigs. However I've found that t2 heavies pop all frigs better than anything else.
For super duper fast frigs apply a web, wait for drones to get close, remove web. Instapop.
Lacking a web you need to micromanage your drones a bit, Send them in, back them off, send them back in. Send them after another target, etc. The goal here is to get the drones far enough away that they turn their MWD's back on and come straight in on that frig.
They can usually one or two volley any frig.
I do run missions with an alt using t2 med's on his oneiros, but honestly.. t2 heavies are the fastest, it just takes a little learning. ---- VHI - We Haul Your Cargo For Free ---- We Miss you Red 7. |

Good advice. I suggest that for best results with heavies vs. frigs, enable "aggressive" and disable "focus fire" in drone settings.

I would actually suggest you keep focus fire enabled. It generally takes all my drones to one volley a fast moving frig. This includes drone interfacing 5, and most of the good drone skills.
I use a megathron however, so my 5 t2 heavy drones are really NOT my main source of dps. On a dominix things might be a bit different but I dont think the damage bonus is significant enough. ---- VHI - We Haul Your Cargo For Free ---- We Miss you Red 7. |

I always use focus fire. I want all my firepower concentrated on a single target to eliminate that target as quickly as possible. ------------

Edited by: Jay Kell on 24/04/2008 15:33:17 I find that *one* heavy drone takes out a frig pretty much as soon as it catches it so disabling "focus fire" works best for me when there are a bunch of frigs to kill. YMMV ofc depending on skills etc.
Edit: I'm flying a domi with all relevant skills at level 5.

Where are these "drone settings" you speak of accessed?

You access the drone settings by right clicking on the little arrow at the top of your drone bay when you are in space. ------------

t2 Hammerheads works fine on drones. You do not need light drones for pve imho.

Well, I'll be against the current ...
I've found that Light Drones, tailored to hit against the weakness of the NPCs you fight, kill the frigates faster than Medium Drones, and A LOT faster than Heavy Drones.
And yes, I have good drone skills, if I say so myself (see link in my sig). <~ sig starts here
