I am considering purchasing either a PS3 or Xbox and would like to ask fellow capsuleers for input. Wii is NOT an option.
I am more of a PC gamer, yet my girlfriend has been "hinting" that it MIGHT be something for me to consider.
Suggestions, ideas, pros, cons, costs, etc are MOST appreciated.
Personally, I don't really care about RPG games. Shooting games are ok, but not a priority I did like GTA when I had PS years ago I do like racing games. I am NOT interested in Fartbook, Twitter or social networking crap. Movies/TV shows would be fine.
Thanks!!!

The only reasons I bought a PS3 was because of Resistance 1,2 and 3.
The only reason I bought the XBOX360 was because of Gears of War 1,2 and 3.
Otherwise I think both are equally worthless. They are big machines, take too much space, make too much noise and are ugly to look at.
Also, finally someone that does also not participate in that fartbook, and all that other crap.... obvious reasons, such as in this link

Yeah, I barely use my PS3 for games these days - PC is by far the better platform. That said, the PS3 is also a bluray player made by the people who developed the technology, so a good option if you want to use it for movies etc. Also, internet connectivity remains free (unless you want to go for the Playstation Plus or whatever it's called) which is a benefit over the Xbox imo. And DUST 514 is coming out on PS3 of course, if you want to play that. And finally, when Sony get hacked and lose all your personal details they'll give you a couple of free games from an incredibly limited selection to make up for their embarrassing error |

You barely even get a good video card for the cost of a PS3 or Xbox 360. @ OP it basically comes down the exclusives and whether or not you want to play Dust.
PS3 has the Resistance series (half baked Half life) and Uncharted and Grand Turismo. The Xbox has Halo (getting old now) and Gears of War. There are some others but those like God of War 3 and Crackdown but those are the biggest.

If your more of a PC gamer a PS3 would probably be better and cheaper in the long run. Has a built in blu-ray player, Dust soon and no paying for online nonsense. |

I own both systems and since moving 5 months ago I have not yet even bothered to unpack my PS3.
For online gaming, PS3 does not come close to the experience of Xbox Live. PS3 makes social gaming (not networking) a clumsy and convoluted experience.
If you like racing games, definitely look into Forza Motorsport 4 on Xbox. I am a long time Gran Tursimo fan but GT4 is super boring compared to the advances Microsoft has made with the Forza series.
As for streaming, both have Netflix apps - with the newest update I think PS3's app was better but I do not know the current state of it. It functions fine but the interface irks me compared to how it used to be. Xbox live allows you to watch HD Verizon TV, and coming in April the HBO Go app for watching all HBO series and movies.
That said, both systems are likely being replaced with newer versions in the next 1-2 years, |

Xbox has a great advantage of alot of games that can tailor to your tastes.
PS3 has several shinig gems in the massive pile of others not so mentionables and not all of them are worth the mentioning.
If you do get a Xbox and miss god of war, I recommend Darksiders to sate you thirst for humanoid/zombie lawnmowers.

And here we see the mental capacity of the average PS3 user.

I still have it along with a N64, and PS, and 2 atari's but I don't have the power cable for it, I think my friend does. I'd be surprised if it still worked after almost a decade of being off. |

Don't buy either until later this year. Folks are still hinting at an xbox 720 or ps4.
If either comes out, you know how console obsolescence goes.
EDIT: But if you absolutely MUST, I think I'd go with xbox if you don't care about dust 514. Most games that are made for both consoles are optimized for the xbox, and they come off as choppy and don't perform as well on the ps3 (even though the ps3's hardware outshines the xbox by a fair amount). Only exclusive game that I have on ps3 that I absolutely love is MGS4.
Other than that, nowadays most of the exclusives on ps3 aren't very good, and like I said, dual ports usually work better on the xbox. |

OP: It always come down to software so what do you want to play on either console and I am curious if you want to do something else like run your media on your console.
I own a PS3, originally intended to be just a blu-ray player but games wise it was more the "unique" games like Heavy Rain and Demon Souls that had me sold.
On the technical side: less of a pain to replace the hard drive in PS3 than on Xbox 360, a very competent blu-ray player for its price, not forced into a subscription plan with Sony to use PSN.

Spoken like a true Xbox fanboy.
And while they are hinting at it, very doubtful they'll see the light in 2012. And I don't see either changing much unless they become more like a PC and less of a "pure" console. I'd kill kittens and puppies and bunnies I'd maim toddlers and teens and then more |

Why not find out what kinda games your GF wants to play then buy the console? Though little big planet is good for the ladies, and move has Wii aspects about it.
Both have pretty awesome little indie games that you can buy from PSN or XBL. |

I play on the ps3, xbox360, wii, and pc. The ps3 is free to play online, has dust 514 coming, and is a blueray player. The xbox360 needs a wirerless router for the older ones, you need to pay to play online, only a dvd player, has more custumization for your avitar, has good game like the halo series and gears of ware. The wii is allright as long as you dont throw the remot in to your tv. I dont have verry mutch to say i like both the ps3 and xbox. |

The PS3 has far more exclusives (games that don't appear on either Xbox or PC). God of War, Infamous, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid etc - Would be something to consider.
As far as i know, the Xbox only has Forza, Gears of War and Halo - All other games on the Xbox are also released on the PC at some point and/or the PS3. If you don't care about those 3 franchises, might aswell get a PS3 for a significantly bigger library of games to choose from (including Dust 514).
I'm pretty much disregarding both Move and Kinect. Neither actually has games whose appeal reaches beyond the age of 12.
That said, i do own both of them. |

Tbh Neither.
Get a AMD mobo with a 939 socket, get an AMD 4800, get a 7800GT and 1gb of ram, a 400w psu(cheap -ú10 one)a 160gb sata drive, install Tiny 7. Plug it into your TV, turn of HD scaling.
There ya go, a ps3 for -ú120
Or spend 400-500 -ú-ú on new pc hardware and laugh at the ps3 and xbox's 7 year old hardware.
Hell both the consoles hardware were equal to hardware tht was around 4 years behind pc hardware the day they were released. Everytime you dont like my comments/posts the terrorists win and your a disgrace to your country. |
