Edited by: Anira on 20/04/2008 15:40:24 Quest probe strength: 250 Sift probe strength: 2000
Quest probe radius: 4 AU Sift probe radius: 0.5 AU or approx. 75 milion kilometers
Let's say that we have a cosmic signature exactly 2 AU away from our quest probe. We start a scan, and after some scans we'll get a result.
Now let's say that we narrow the signature down to 0.25 AU. In theory, a sift probe should have an exactly 8x better chances to get a hit compared to our quest probe. In practice however scanning at sift ranges does not take less attempts, more if anything.
It's particularely bad at ultra close ranges (say within 2000 km of the signature) which makes no sense as the chance to get a hit is supposed to increase as the distance to the signature decreases.

I honestly cant say i have.
In my experience i spend way more time on the quest probes than on anything else, my record for scans after a quest was three, two with the sift, and each time i got a bit closer.
Most of the time after finishing with the quest probes one or two more scans do it.

you should see it a bit difrend.
look a quest probe goes 4au. so if we think a bit logic the quest probe should be the one with the strongest strenght becouse it coverst a biger range. its accuracy shoudl be less.
so when we take this thinking into action the 0.5au sift will have the week strength but the high accuracy.
so without looking at the numbers witch are not realy imporant on any mods anyway. you sift does exactly what it should do.
if you get a 2k hit on a quest and cant get the hit on the sift the only explenation is that you are not scanning for the correct type. or you are damn unlucky.

I just got confirmation from GM Karidor that there is indeed a bug.
It doesn't occur all the time fortunately. The GM said they were lacking information about what is causing it, however repackaging the ship can help. |

but repackaging the ship will destroy rigs... hopefully you can negociate with the GM in question to get rigs replaced.
It's not a good idea to discuss GM interactions though...

Another way to see it is that each probe has the same internal power, but the shorter range probes have that power concentrated in a smaller range and so have a bigger strength.
Also note that probes cover a volume, so the strength should be proportional to 1/(d^3) rather then, as it is, 1/d.

Have you bug reported this, if not, it's the quickest way to get the issue seen to and even if we're aware of it, the more information we receive on it the easier it is to fix it. Mitnal, Community Representative

Same happend to me couple of times... really nice hit with quest, bot then no hit with sift for at least 5 probes. I then changed my way of thinking into CCP mode: First quest, then comb (even if result is good enough for sift), after that sift and Hey presto! A scann result you can warp to :) Dunno why this happened but it worked every time so far.

I have all scan skills at Level V.
I normally hit a site within 1 sift probe.
But recently sometimes but I notice it takes 5+ sift probes, and I still get no result.
I found that if I had used 5+ sifts and had no result - I could log my char, log him back in, drop a sift, and hey presto! get a hit on the first scan.
Worked for 5 out of 5 attempts for me.

Interesting. I think I will try to eject ship and reboard when I get those pesky sift results.
