ok , what is the quickest way to probe out these guys ?
is it the use of fathom probes from Safe spots to cover as much of the system as possible ?

Try sending them a gang invite. If they accept...warp to them :P

I choose to do that, as I find it to be the most effective way of scanning people down. If you're only searching for random targets, this is a very effective method, as you will usually find a few that are 'green' (high resolution hits) and some that are either 'yellow' (medium) or 'red' (low).
Once I have a few greens scanned out, I usually warp to their location, and bookmark something so that I can return.
'Spook' probes are stronger, and provide higher resolution hits, however, they have half the range of 'Fathom' probes.

For random mission runners, I have my probe alt just use quest probes from different points in the system, with the goal of putting as many 4AU probes in the system as possible. In a small system (Irjunen, for example) I can cover about 50-60% of the entire system with just 4-5 probes. In larger systems, I can use up to 12 or more.
I usually end up with a few good hits every scan.

Are missions run with in 4 AU of planets or is that just a myth?

Racial quest probes deployed from safespots 4au away from celestials (to reduce the number of false positives you get)
Scan for drones aswell

That's SNOOP probes which are stronger and have 1/2 the range. Spooks are weaker and have x2 the range of Fathoms.

That is in no way possible. Even dropping say 12 quest probes doesn't cover half of the area in which missions may spawn. I've heard that missions spawn within 20 AU of the system's star. I don't know if this is true, but I know they spawn *at least* that far out. how many 8AU-wide spheres can you fit in a 40-AU wide sphere? A lot. And that's without them even overlapping.
Because missions are more likely to spawn near the star than far from it, dropping 8-12 quest probes around there, without overlapping, lets you cover enough space to get a few hits per cycle in a system with 100+ mission runners. It by no means covers most of the space or gets you a majority of mission runners. Of course it takes a long time to set up the probes and you lose them if you dock, so you'll need a team of helpers to act on the results you find (ninja salvage, loot, bait for a gank, or whatever).

From my experience, all missions are within 20 AU of the star.
If you're serious about probing mission runners, you'll want complete coverage of the system - you'll need bookmarks every 4 AU over the 20 AU sphere, allowing you to drop a Quest probe at any point and get a hit in a couple of minutes. Yes, this does mean hundreds of bookmarks...
Otherwise, just drop Snoop/Fathom/Spook and hope for the best...

I don't think you need complete coverage, unless you have a huge team available to be fleet-warped, and are totally dedicated to raping every mission in the system. 8 or 10 quests is enough to get as many missions per cycle as 3-4 guys can salvage.

Edited by: Taquila on 22/04/2008 12:12:53 Missions are where ever, hidden plex's (type that you probe for) are normaly close to the planet's.
as for the op, i normaly try to use a fathom probe (for speed), get within 10au, see if he has drones out (drone are easyer to find than most ships).
also use your brain a bit, a bs is easyer to probe than a bc, so depending what ship your searching, how close you can get to him, and if he's useing drones realy depend's on the fastest way of finding him, if you can get within 4au of the ship your looking for then as already said, use racial quest probe's, due to the strenth of these you will more than likely get "a hit" on the ship, but you are risking him ending the mission due to the amount of time it takes to set up a ss close to him and the amount of time the scan takes.
my forum *****ing is over for now

Probing specific mission runners (war targets) now requires you have a personal history of having ran missions in that system already, or been playing eve long enough to have web-bookmarked every system while the so called "junk" still existed. It's called Immersion. And the Eve community loves it.
Probing any old mission runner... drop a 20au probe in any mission hotspot like dodixie, warp to any drones you detect (that are not in belts or near stations of course), usually find one in 15 minutes. |

With my training in Astrometrics IV, Astrometric Pinpointing III, Astrometric Triangulation III, and Signal Acquisition III, as well as the dual Gravity Capacitor I rigs on my Imicus, I can usually find three in under 60 seconds, so I'm not certain where you're getting your numbers from.
Of course, maybe I'm just that good!

Its quite different probing out any mission runner in a system full of ppl, then probing out a specific mission runner.

Absolutely. That's why a comprehensive bookmark net is so useful.

Go to the station the main body of mission runners are leaving from and watch the direction they warp in as well as the ship they have. Write it down and proceed to drop probes in Safe Spots around there warp point. You will find that probing for drones will help but then if you get the 4AU probes in range your laughing. ----------------
