You see it more and more.. people having there alts cloaked in a system for 23/7 a day.. Once in a while they are active but most of the times not..
If i go afk for a let say 15 min ill be disconnected when i get back.. however these guys are online all teh time.. making them unpredictable..
I cant find anything in the eula but is this an exploit of any kind.. ?
Anyway it sure as hell is enoying..

Being disconnected when idle is not a feature, it only happens to some people.
There's no exploit here or anything like that.
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started.

You just have an unstable connection and/or a crappy isp who keep disconnecting you. No exploit here. Seriously, we need some kind of separation between the post and signature. |

If you want a go at not disconnecting, pinging the server continually while you play might help.

unsure, but when you're cloaked and just pulsing forward, you don't register as afk.
If there is a disconnect feature at all.

If you keep moving while cloaked, you don't get disconnected so fast, as your position will get tracked by the server resulting in a continous pinging. |

combine it with logserver and suddenly you have detailed data collected by automated alts on when and where everyone is in a given set of systems.

I'm not sure if BACON can do it but this would be a very powerful strategic tool.
Possibly overpowered.

bacon, as shipped, cant.
but you guys are vastly overestimating how difficult this is. i'd be surprised if there wasnt at least 10 or so private alliance tools for it as of now. just tail the file and look for lines with the entered local data. |

As I understand it, that facility was removed from the current release of BACON at the request of CCP. But, from certain GM posts on this board, there's an implication that some alliances have private tools that do a similar job, which would make gathering strategic intelligence significantly easier, granting significant and unfair advantages to the tool-users.

Alts suck period. They lead to metagaming. Metagaming leads to fear. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to Hate. Hate leads to suffering.
Seriously, I think the game would be much better if you could only have one character--at least per account, so you can only play one at a time.

You can only log in one character per account... however, you can't force people into having only one account. ________

You fail @ understanding EVE. This is already how it works, you can only play 1 of your 3 characters per account. -=^=-

Alts are inextricably bound up with EVE right now...cyno alts, capital ship holding alts, alts to scout gates for you, alts to scout outside of stations for you, etc etc.
Too many alts needed for too many things.
That said, being logged in for 23/7 isn't anykind of exploit. I can go afk for 10 hours and come back and I'm still logged in.

I used to get disconnected randomly if I went afk for more than like 15 minutes. Fixed it by joining the recruitment channel (or any other spam filled channel). The constant messages keep the connection alive I guess.

Riiiight. Go to download page (goons) and look up versions earlier than the official "02" or whatever it is. They have the old code in and working . Moreover, Goons also provide PHP for you WWW to collect the data too!

When I am in my dorm I can afk all day and not lose my connection. But when I go home on the weekends I will lose it if I don't do anything for 10 or so mins. My fix is to join a channel with lots of spam: recruitment, help, ect. It keeps me from timing out well. :) »\(¦_o)/»

when i'm docked up on my laptop (wireless) in an empty system, i'll have troubles staying connected.
Sit in Amarr or Jita or whereever though and I can idle for hours...
the channel spam idea works too
as for AFK cloaking, I don't personally see anything wrong with it. ...

None of those things require alts. What do you think corps and corpmates are for? The fact that one player can be in 2, 3, 4, or more places at once sucks, IMO.

A very primitive macros can do it, or you can login with remote desktop from work.

I can't believe what I'm hearing. You all think joining a spam channel to keep you from timing out is a 'fix'? It's an exploit in my book. Anything that avoids the game mechanics... am I right?
Hard to prove, but yet another failure in CCPs way of looking to fix afkers.
As for afk cloakers, they are a thorn in everyone's side. NO GAME, should allow for such distraction of a 0.0 system without the player even being there. I'm a cloak fan, but there needs to be something in place to not encourage them to go afk. A flaw that CCP has yet to squeeze thru its thick skull. --------------------------------- Pithecanthropus erectus, a name derived from Greek and Latin roots meaning upright ape-man. |

Are you saying everyone must rely on people who might not even log on to use capital ships etc.? and why force your corpies to hang around high-sec to provide a cyno for carrier shopping trips? The reason people use alts for this is because it gives them the freedom of choosing when to do stuff, not waiting for other players.

Yes, nerf the recruitment and help channel, what an exploit! Because I should have to logout when it's time to make a sammich, get a drink, let the dog out. QQ moar.

Am I not right tho? If CCP takes their rules seriously... this is an exploit. Nerfing the channel is obviously not a fix, but I admire your spin on things. Proper coding is the answer. Perhaps if CCP looked at improving its quality before adding quantity... things like this would be fixed. There's obviously a timing out code written... badly I might add... so there intent to rid the game of afkers is being exploited by joining spam channels. simple. --------------------------------- Pithecanthropus erectus, a name derived from Greek and Latin roots meaning upright ape-man. |
