Even with a railgun patch to prop up the hybrid side of Caldari ships, is the Ferox a lost cause at this point? Railguns seem to not be a preferred choice with it, and missiles seem to be a bad choice as well. Is there nothing that plays into it's strengths or am I just overreacting? |

With the introduction of the Naga, the only use I can find for the Ferox is as a blaster ship. You can squeeze 660 [email protected]+4.1 and a 62k DPS tank out of it without much problem, which is pretty respectable really. My biggest problem with it is that it feels kinda like a brick and its DPS output is a little anemic for a blaster ship.
Anyway, this is what I'd probably run:
[Ferox, Neutron Ferox] Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Damage Control II
Experimental 10MN MicroWarpdrive Warp Scrambler II Stasis Webifier II Large Shield Extender II Invulnerability Field II
Heavy Neutron Blaster II, Void M Heavy Neutron Blaster II, Void M Heavy Neutron Blaster II, Void M Heavy Neutron Blaster II, Void M Heavy Neutron Blaster II, Void M Heavy Neutron Blaster II, Void M Small Nosferatu II
Medium Core Defence Field Extender I Medium Core Defence Field Extender I Medium Core Defence Field Extender I
Warrior II x5
Most of the options I can think of revolve around the DC and Web - Nano+Invuln, Nano+Web, DC+Web, DC+Inv, etc. You might even be able to run 2 MFS/2 Nano/2 TCs and try to kite with it.. but its really just too slow for that kind of work. I just don't think there's a whole lot of hope for the Ferox until CCP revisits Tier 1 BCs.
On the bright side, it should bring you lots of fights... and its not thaaat bad. Kinda like the old Cyclone - its reputation worse than its actual abilities?

The Cyclone is crap. Totally and utterly crap, which is why I fly it. Just no one else start realising how crap it is.
Honestly, now you can actually fit neutrons and a tank to the Ferox, it isn't that bad of a small gang DPS ship...if your gang includes a logi, and you include an ability to fly the thing properly.
I think that if it feels like a brick, you should fit a nano to it. I've heard people complain about the Cyclone being a slug compared to the nanocane...but then not fitting 2 nanos to the Cyclone. It can go like a scalded cat, and same for the Ferox.
Its the same thing as nanodrake vs brick drake - one can be annoying if you have tackle on the field able to hold down something long enough for the drake's long range to work; the other is a pathetic way to fly. With the Ferox, like all blaster boats, you basically need to do the opposite of a nanodrake and just run straight for the enemy and pew pew them...and overheat your MWD liberally, then OH your scram and web to grab them. Your optimal bonus will greatly help you deal some DPS in a stern chase.
I think the key with the Ferox may in fact be TE's. DPS isn't ZOMGWTFBBQ but with a TE or two people will find it hard to kite you. If they are, well, 5s later you've got Null or Lead in and you have rails-level range anyway.
In fact, I shall have to start rolling a Ferox around, see how I go.
Medium rails suck, and if you are going to run rails, you may as well get a Naga and put the big guns on. The skilful employer of men will employ the wise man, the brave man, the covetous man, and the stupid man. Sun Tzu @trinketsfriend on twatter

The only thing I could see using the Ferox for is to make use of the ability to put a siege warfare link on it and act as support for a cheap sniper platform of Moa's and maybe some Nagas. Very limited use, unfortunately.
CCP needs to get on with removing the tier system and start balancing ships around roles, and soon. The brokenness that is the Ferox is just one of many, many ships. I'd rather die in battle against a man who will lie to me, than for a man who will lie to me. |

Ferox and Cyclone are fine in small gangs, especially when you want your opponents to draw first blood, as those ships are completely under-estimated. Both are more of close range boats than kiting boats tho, so getting aggro from a lot of ships will get you killed pretty fast unless help is REALLY close.
Active tanked it can be okz for solo, just like the Cyclone, but don't expect wonders. Should be able to get buffer BCs 1vs1. Canes are harder than other cause of neuts, but doable with good timing (or bad on their side, pick one).
Tbh the Ferox has as a limited use as any other active tanking oriented BC (like the Gallente ones)...but it's cheaper and/or less feared so it might get you more fights.
As a sniper it was always underpowered. If you cannot use a Naga or another Tier 3, using an HML Caracal or something like that is actually better than a single sniping ferox! I mean...sniping ferox is not really better than a sniping catalyst or Harpy "War does not determine who is right - only who is left." -- Bertrand Russell |

Bolded the funny party, would love to see a ferox that could tank 62k DPS!
Due to the reduced fitting cost of hybrid guns you can now squeeze an XL booster on a ferox without a single fitting mod, pretty cool if you're a crystal implant/blue pill user:
[Ferox, XL booster PvP Ferox] Damage Control II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Experimental 10MN MicroWarpdrive Medium Electrochemical Capacitor Booster I, Navy Cap Booster 800 Warp Scrambler II X-Large C5-L Emergency Shield Overload I Invulnerability Field II

She posted the fit that makes this possible, so you already had the chance to see it.
62k on a Ferox is easily possible as a buffer tank.
Almost all ships are good if you look beyond standard thinking. Just like the Cyclone the Ferox can be pretty mean if fitted well/creatively. There are only a very small number of ships I cant/wont fly because I cant get a decent fit on them. The Ferox is not one of them.
So is the Ferox dead? No, not to me anyways.

Hmm. Yeah, I'm starting to sound like Spank. FWIW, the best I could come up with was ~37.4k DPS local tanked. Getting 62k DPS tanked with the fit I posted is pretty easy with a pair of triage Chimeras on the field. :-/

I'm getting about 60k EHP with that fit and my skills aren't even maxed. This is without the triage carriers.
He was making a funny because I ****** up in my initial post. I meant EHP, said DPS. This shouldn't be such a confusing issue given that I posted the fit in question.

If you have to ask the question then yes the Ferox is dead atleast to you. I personaly love it and enjoy flying it. The best part of it is you will get alot of fights.
(Eve community if you happen to read this thread the TLDR is the ferox sucks its by far the worst ship in eve and it can never possibly win any fights. It is just for gas harvesting and mining. So if you ever see anyone flying in one you have to engage because it is a free kill. I hear some fail flashy red pirate lives in the Elore system in the Solitude region who often can be seen flying in one.) |

Ferox is OK, as long as you're not comparing it to the Drake.
Here's hoping it becomes viable in its own right once the tiers get killed |

well the new ferox is going to be frontal assault so expect the optimal range to go and be swapped for damage and add a high slot and an extra mid slot... plus enough pg to fit everything...
then you have a very nice blaster ship...
edit. think about it this way after tieriside its going to be the only caldari BC with a resist bonus... |

Blaster Ferox > blaster Brutix unless it's for gank something imho. OC blaster brutix has more raw dps but thing is that blaster ferox has a much better range engagement envelope, natural shield HP regen/slots for fittings (and so survivability compared to Brutix). I still like brutix but just for F1 (gank something) or small gang hopping not to be primary. It's one of those ships waiting for Tallest to come back or CCP to do the right thing and throw tiers away once and for all and I can't wait for this to happen.
And OP, even Brutix can't fit more than 3 250's without cap out, nothing else fitted than guns with perfect gunnery/engineering skills
Now try to fit a repairer and use the uber repair bonus, awesome right? |

This is the truth In PvP Rails on the Ferox are useless.
Blasters however with a TE has a 20km envelope around it using ions with null will do more damage then 425 ACs with barrage since patch. And you swap to void or anti if you are close to the target for Damage that ACs cannot match.
I usually use a NOS in the last high to counter being neuted.
Its a sluggish beast though.
Good tank, Good DPS, Close range, Slow.
PvE rails work well. If you dont want to train missiles its not much worse then a drake. But level 4s are not really doable in a ferox like you can in a drake. Thats when you move to the Rohk on the progression tree. |
