Okay, so I've been running missions for the Caldari Business Tribunal for some time now, and I've noticed that my standing with Gallente has fallen to -4.65. I understand that when your standings with a major faction fall below -5, you will be attacked on site and denied docking access to that faction's stations.
What I would like to know is...
#1: Do skills like Diplomacy count against your negative standing to keep faction fleets off your back? I am unsure if it applies to the faction as a whole, or simply the agents of that faction.
#2: Is there any way to increase my standing with the Gallente without harming the standings I have with other factions? |

#1 - yes it does. It works against negative standings across the board.
#2 - nope. When you raise your Gallente standing, your Caldari standing will fall. However, the amount of negative change is less than the amount of positive change. It is possible to have positive standings with the four empire factions at the same time.

Thanks for your reply, Alec. I would take it that the Social skill also increases the impact of a negative standing change? |

http://eve-maths.com/wiki/index.php?title=Standings is probably the best resource for standings math.
There are several possibilities with faction and derived standings changes.
I am certain social modifies the gained faction standings up.
I do not know if the derived standings work off of the standings before social modifications. This can probably be found by looking at them more closely to see if they match up to the unmodified or modified standing increase.
I do not know if positive derived standings have social skill factor into them.
I do not believe that social increases the negative amount of derived standings losses. The social skill says only positive changes (but then it wouldn't surprise me given other skills not being exactly clear or doing something slightly different).
My guess as to how it works: All standings and derived standings work off of the base standing change. All positive standing gains have social applied to them. All negative standing losses do not have any effect.
Assuming this: Lets take a +5% gain with Gallante. Lets take social skill at 4 (+20%) This would give a gain of +6% (5 * 1.2) Caldari would have a penalty of -2.5% (-5 standings to Gallante, so 50% of the base gain) Minimtar would gain +4.8%(5 * 0.8 * 1.2) Amarr would have a penalty of -1% ( 5 * 0.2 )
If you have a initial standing of +8.0 with Caldari and an inital standing of -4.0 with Gallante this would then result in: Caldari: (-10 - 8) * 2.5% + 8 = 7.55 Gallante: (10 - -4) * 6% + -4 = -3.16
At least, thats my understanding of the math of standings.

As far as I know when you are below -2.00 effective standing with a faction, you will no longer be able to get missions from any agent, no matter your standing with the corporation of that agent.
Your options are to train up Diplomacy (or whichever it is that affects negative standing), and, if you've already done that, you're pretty much screwed. Collaborative mission turn-in only boost corporate standing, and not standing with the faction (storyline missions don't share standings boosts).
At least, that's as far as I know. I'd be interested in other info on how to get back from a below -2.00 faction standing, if anyone has done it. I'm hiding from my main. |

You could run missions for a faction that has a positive standing to Gallante also. Sisters of Eve and Minmatar are good options for that.
