I love ccp, I really do. But every day they seem to care less and less about the community. For those that were here from the start it never used to be like this at all, in fact it was the exact opposite and the game flourished because of the unique dev and player interaction. I don't know what happened or what decision was made but the forums now feel like a third party one, theres no heart in it.
Yes as the subscriber rate has increased so has the amount of forum jerks but thats no reason to abandon your core forum fan base and act like we dont exist.
Any marketing guru will tell you that word of mouth especially from gamers on the internet is a powerful tool that can make or break games. This game has grown 8 servers in 2 months through word of mouth. My point is if you want eve to continue to grow then you have to interact with the vocal minority (forum users) give them a reason to jump onto other game forums and tell the world how great Eve is. By that same method is how most EVE players including myself got here from Earth and Beyond, the EA devs went silent and the forums were rife with 'wait till eve online comes out'. No amount of picture ads, tv ads or interviews can top player word of mouth.
The dev forum blackout here is a dangerous game and i feel it unnecessary, somewhat childish and not in the spirit of what this community was first built on. The worst thing is this is the second time i've noticed big news is breaking outside the community before we even know what's going on.
Please rethink your strategy in interacting with your players and at least offer us the courtesy of finding development news first since we care about the game and support it. Get excited again about telling us stuff, bounce ideas off us - you should be itching to jump on the forums 'hey guys what do you think of this!?' not backing away from them.
If you cannot be yourselves on your own forums then you are not in control. If you are afraid to post because you will be flamed then you are not in control. The forums are not hard to control if you cut the red tape and use no bull**** moderation, take a tougher stance then this will be a better place for everyone.
This is perhaps the strongest worded constructive criticism i've ever had of ccp in my 5 years here and believe makes me feel very sad but it has to be said.
You got a good thing going here, don't screw it up. Forum trolls are disposable. _______

Regarding Ikariam, are you asking a forum full of nerds and geeks to be excited about a big percentage increase over a trivial base?

dilbert. This week (well at least the email version).

I personally think they should close this part of the forum (general discussion) or perhaps even better rename it to "moaning and whining". Other parts are really good - like ships and modules and market discussions (not that I know enough to contribute to either) but this place is low quality PvP for when you are at work or salvaging

There are lots of people who just come to the forum to whine. Many people don't read these forums because they have nothing to whine about. Then there are people who come to these forum to discuss, to learn about the game, to talk about there adventures, have a good time,...
I believe it just need some common sense to filter the bad topics out and just focus on the good ones. I'm only a 2 months old player so i don't know how it was in the old days but from what i've seen, these forums are great. The input GM's and devs do, are fair enough i guess. I've never seen this amount of input from devs or gm's in another mmo.
You also have to know that if you have a userbase of over 300k, their will be some bad apples. The world is not perfect and the more people that subscribe to eve, the larger the chance is their will be some bad people.

Since only about 1% of forum posts are worth reading - the others being comprised of whines, general cluelessness or stupid ideas - CCP's policy seems very sensible.

I see four blue stripes next to un-stickied posts on general discussion front page, how can that be deciphered as dev silence?

Once a dev posted a dev blog about a possible idea he had and he was eaten alive by the community at large, why should the devs be excited about posting un-finished ideas when the community is ready to eat them?
There is a reason why dev <> player comunication is a tough situation to take care of.

Time to face the music. CCP is not a group of people who have a hobby and a passion. CCP is now a business just like EA. Money talks.

The "community" hasn't exactly been supportive of CCP's attempts at open communication and discussion. Maybe if the community put down their pitchforks and torches, we might get some more useful information out of them again.

This pretty much sums it up. But now the pitch forks are out, no one can put them away again.
Its a shame, I wish Id been around a bit earlier in EVE. I think I caught the last flourishes of the Devs about 2 years ago and without a doubt theyve been in full retreat from the forums ever since. Mistakes have been made on both sides of the player / dev community, can they be repaired? I think its unlikely and that doesnt bode well for the future.

i was just about to post that the marketing of eve has shifted to an EA style of marketing.
the good news is it'll sell more copies in the short term, the bad news is that eve is ccp's long term product, not a throw away cash cow (read: battlefield 2) so, as the OP wrote, it's a dangerous game their playing
edit: and tbh, i suspect the new players that flocked in recently are those with the pitchforks you speak of. It's a downward spiral from here on out unless they turn it around.

I suggest you start recommending the game because the game is good, not because the devs are chummy. :)

How's that a fallacy?
A. I think there's less dev interaction since I joined. B. There appears to have been more dev interaction before I joined. C. Ergo I wish Id been in EVE at an earlier date because the earlier period sounds better.
Where's the false statement in all of that?
C.

In the beginning they needed to be more focused on player interaction... now the money is coming is so much, they really don't care as long as it still comes in. Eve is in essence a game, but it is also a very powerful business. Just like all companies, money becomes the root of it all. Bad costumer service and management ties into laziness and greed. Too much success leads to too much ego and selfishness.

The truth is more likely that there is too many moron players posting here, so why spend time trying to communicate with them when all they get is grief?
I wouldnt. Which reminds me, I need to leave this thread.

Considering your post, I wonder why you play? You're pretty doom and gloom yourself.
Regardless, I'm just stating what I've observed has happened in the past. People like to over react. And the only thing people like better than over reacting is being in a mob that is over reacting.
And it has also been my observation that the people with legitimate issues tend to be overwhelmed by over reacting veterans who are certain that whatever CCP is doing is going to ruin EVE, and by n00bs who haven't a clue what the implications are of what is being discussed but want to be involved in the complaints anyway.
