Is a torpedo rattlesnake viable for running lvl 4 missions? I've been playing around in a torp raven for a few weeks and have been looking for an upgrade. The 50% missile velocity bonus seems to lend itself nicely to torps, which is nice because I'd rather not use cruise missiles. I would like to be able to solo level 4's or with the help of one other person. I am aware of some of the different active or passive tank fits on the forums, and I like the idea of a passive tank (<3 my passive drake), but I'm not sure if it's at all viable while using torpedoes.
I've seen a few torp ravens use a combination of torp velocity and flight time rigs, but I'm not sure that I'd be willing to sacrifice the CCC rigs (for an active setup) or the field defense purgers (passive). The tank is crucial, but I still need enough dps to kill enemies quickly or else the damn thing will never pay for itself.
I'd prefer setups with mostly T2 gear rather than mostly faction if at all possible. A few key faction items are fine.
Please don't flame me or just reply "use cruise missiles", if I wanted to make a cookie cutter mission runner I'd just train up cruise missles and buy a CNR like everyone else. sig |

You can use the Rattlesnake with torps and a passive setup with field defense purgers to do lvl 4's EASILY. So easily in fact you can almost be afk :)
The Rattlesnake can tank a ton. Better than a Navy Raven but also more isk.

T2 launchers (for Javelin torps) and missile range extension rigs, preferably alongside an afterburner are almost mandatory for L4 missions... since you do have loads of enemies well outside the "regular" max torp range... so many that using Cruise missiles instead will let you finish faster (you don't have to move the darn boat for each and every target). It's the reason the Vargur sucks at L4 missions (you just don't get enough range for proper AC use, and you can't fit arty due to grid issues), and the reason why nobody flies a solo blasterboat in L4s either.
Sorry, you either go with tiny tank + big DPS + speed + weapon range extensions... or with mega tank + poor DPS with awesome base range. Everything else is a lot worse.

Do lvl5's in Torp Passive tanked rattlesnake. Lvl4's you are better off in cruise or if you must use torps, then use a golem

Edited by: Cpl Punnishment on 28/04/2008 08:51:00 This post caught my eye. I don't see a lot of Rattlesnakes around my neck of the woods. So I am interested now in Building a workable Battle Ship platform to solo LVL 4s. ATM I use eithre Drake or Raven for this task. Do many passive tank Rattlesnakes with positive results? What does your set up look like? Sorry I am not trying to hijack the OP's post, but I would like to hear more about the Rattlesnake.

Think navy raven -1 launcher +1 low & a little extra shields. ***The EVE servers and their patches*** |

no point in using a rattler for missions. reason being is you just don't need the extra tank it provides so you may as well clear spawns quicker with a cnr
of course it does look abit more guchi, but thats the only reason :)

What more reason do I need?
Seriously though, I understand that cruise are more practical for mission running and that the CNR is arguably more effective as a solo mission boat, but I want to concentrate on torpedoes while maybe skilling up to a torp golem later. Anyway, I usually play with at least one other person, so I don't need to 100% self sufficient.
So then if I insist on using torps, what would be the best tank I could squeeze out of the thing while still getting good enough range to not be chasing npc's all over creation? I plan on tinkering around in EFT later to see what I can come up with, but i'd like some ideas especially if anyone has tried something similar. |

with a officer booster and crystal implants the tank is amazing
i remember back when I was doing missions accidently aggroing whole or mordus headhunters, errr I think that was it and didn't even break a sweat.
the ships tank though really needs a gist booster, c type minimum
i suspect ships like the golem are now far better though due to resists, not flown one though as been out of game

Passive just doesn't work with torps. The reason is that passive tank works off slots. The more slots the better. And you absolutely must sacrifice 1 mid + 2 rig slots to make torps work at all. Then you have to use so many lowslots to make the tank adequate, that a cruise fit with damagemods in those slots does same DPS.
To make active tank work you'll need a Gist booster (even the cheapest will do). Here's what I was able to get:
-------------------------------------------------------------- [Rattlesnake, New Setup 1] Co-Processor II 2 x Capacitor Flux Coil II 3 x Ballistic Control System II
2 x Heat Dissipation Field II Ballistic Deflection Field II Gist C-Type Large Shield Booster Shield Boost Amplifier II Phased Weapon Navigation Array Generation Extron
6 x Siege Missile Launcher II, Caldari Navy Juggernaut Torpedo Salvager I Small Tractor Beam I
Capacitor Control Circuit I 2 x Hydraulic Bay Thrusters I --------------------------------------------------------------
Remarks: 1)It runs for 47m with a CR4 implant and 5/4 cap skills. 2)I know that split missile rigs give a bit more range, but I prefer my torps to go faster. 3)Can't squeeze even a medium shield booster without a CPU upgrade.
Conclusion: This thing ganks like a Torp Golem and tanks like an average T2 Raven. And it eats through faction torps twice as fast as the Torp Golem does.
If you want even more gank with slightly less tank, you can use Pithum C-Type booster and one more BCS II instead of one of the Flux Coils. That would gank like a max gank Torp Golem and tank like a newbie Raven
Most of the fit can be reused later on a Torp Golem which you should train for if you want to use torps.

you'd prolly find that cruise launchers would speed up missions, on average across all missions cruise will make your life easier and faster... at least with maxed missile skills
i remember running tons of tests on this against the clock and that was the result

There is simply no way you can beat the raw DPS output of a torp fit
I've tried it once and can't make myself use cruise missiles again (I prefer to cancel the few missions where the targets are more than 55km away ).

Perfect. Alex, I share your sentiments about torpedoes, and I look forward to one day piloting a torp golem. Skill-wise I have a few months, but I can fly this rattler as soon as I save up a little dough. Seems like the perfect raven --> torp golem transition ship if you ask me.
Your provided setup looks great, and is a good balance between decent torp range and a feasible tank, which is of course the tricky part about torp setups.
Definately not a cheap mission boat, but if I wanted cheap I wouldn't be asking for rattler setups
