Hi All!
I am about to purchase a destroyer (Cormorant) for a bit of ratting and salvaging use.
I am toying with the idea of maybe going with two launchers, four blasters and two salvagers in the high slots. I know it is normally a rail ship, but I thought it may be a bit different / kick-arse, to go with missiles while closing the gap, and then open up with blasters at close range!
Is this a good idea or not?!

The nice thing about the Comorant is that its bonuses are applied to both Rails and Blasters, so you need not be concerned there. Personally, I wouldn't worry about using Defender missiles against rats, as most small rats will be firing rockets at very short range, and Defenders won't hit em.
Low: Power Diagnostic (or Reactor Control if you need PG) Mids: Invulnerability / Small Shield Extender / Cap Recharger / Afterburner Highs: Standard Missile Launcher / 4 x Light Neutron Blasters / Tractor Beam / 2 x Salvager I
That setup should serve you well; Cap should be stable, or close to it, and you can perma-run the Invuln field and your AB should you choose. |

Is it best to go for Invul? Or should I put a small shield booster in alongside the extender? Just to be able to top up during a fight?

I never used the cormorant for missions. Because: I didnt want to train at gunnery, just in missiles.
Used the Kestrel for lvl 1, then the Caracal for lvl 2. The cormorant is my salvaging ship. 4 salvagers and 4 tractors. Its a waste of time to skill on the cormorant as mission ship, cuz i bet u want to use missiles later in lvl 4's.

I`m not going to use the Corm as a mission ship, I have got a Kessie for that.
I am going to use the Corm for ratting / salvage.
I think I will have to toy with the mid-slots to see how much tank / cap I can get out of it. I picked up two 150mm and two 125mm rail guns from NPC rats last night, so it looks like I will be going rail-gun Corm after all!!

If you're comfortable with actively managing a shield booster, then by all means, go for it. Keep in mind though, that if you want to perma-run the booster, then you'll have to rig the thing, and it would take a looooooong time before that Comorant earns back the ISK you put into it (35 Mil for 2 x CCC, and being just slightly under cap stable, though three rats shouldn't take 8 minutes to kill). I suggested the Invuln as it was an easier fit Cap-wise and doesn't require active managment in that particular setup; you'd undock, turn it on and leave it on throughout your ratting.

I went to 5 tractors, three salvagers on my salvaging Cormorant - some wrecks don't take long to salvage, so was ending up with down time on the slavagers due to nothing close enough.
AB, Cap Battery, Cap Recharger in the mids - didn't really put too much thought into the cap issue...
Then, due to a side interest in Minmatar Industrials, I discovered the Thrasher - one more low slot for an expander = about 70 more m3 of cargo capacity over the Cormie. Worth a look - Minnie Frigate 3 doesn't take too long to train.

Your right on the boosters. The invul would be less of a management issue.
Its all a bit academic at the moment, seeing as I managed to get my brand new Cormie slotted in low-sec last night!
When I buy another, it is going to have its high-slots rammed with tractors and salvagers, and its going nowhere near low-sec for the minute. There just arent enough low slots to make it survivable without spending ALOT of isk, and even then, I cant escape any warpscrams apart from lone pirates.
