Right now if you press Ctrl and drag the cursor with the Leftmouse button..
[You get this]
This Zoom window is whacked. There's a better way to zoom using the Rightmouse button anyways.
Instead of this useless Zoom window when you press Ctrl. I propose this new and improve Selection Box feature.
When you press and hold the Ctrl button and then leftclick in-space and drag the mouse. It creates a selection box!
[As shown here]
So once you drag your Selection Box around a group of entities and then release the leftmouse button. Depending on your targeting speed, you will eventually produce..
[This outcome]

that zoom box is useless.
right-clicking and targeting can be a PITA, for sure. if you have a mass of enemies, that can be time-consuming if you have to do it for each and every potential target, unless you want to wait like a moron for them to target you first. i believe this idea has merit, even if it becomes useless for targeting multiple enemies when your targets are intermingled with friendlies. for npc hunting, however, it would work like a charm. miners could also use this to easily target all the roids in a cluster without having to right click each and every one.
even used on one ship at a time, this would be preferable to having to right-click, go down the menu to Lock Target, and then clicking again.
i support this idea.

Great idea.
Just remove that useless zoom window.. Oh and CCP, now we are talking about it, just why on earth did you at all add such a totally useless feature? Its even bugged as hell when you go into 1:1 detail (press left mouse button) ------------- Most tired of thing atm: - Mods on the forum saying: "Please use the bug report page to submit bugs, the forum is not the place to post them." and then closing a topic. |

There's however a really cool Zoom feature. Steps below:
1) Rightclick and drag the mouse in space to desired area. 2) w/o letting go of the rightclick, click & hold both buttons. 3) Zoom in/out by dragging the mouse up and down.

Why don't you guys just use your scanner? The auto setting brings up all enemies pretty quickly and you can just right-click the name and select "Target" as normal... seems pretty easy.

(yeah, i know about Auto Target Back and all that, but sometimes it's a pain to have it set so high. and i'd rather start targeting them before they start targeting me...) |

uh no.. That only works if you have no target. So once you get your first target, then that does not work any more.
I still stand by the Selection Box feature. But if you really want to get serious. We should also add this feature on top of the original request. And the other feature i'm referring to.
Ctrl+(doubleclick)leftmouse for insta targeting.
So if you hold the Ctrl button in and double leftclick an entity on your Autoscanner. BAM!! It proceeds to target that entity.
So if you hold the Ctrl button in and double leftclick an entity in the space view. WA BAM!! It also proceeds to target that object.
Anyone apposed to quicker ways of establishing targets. You need to get out of the station more often.

I'd like to add that a selection box would also be nice for selecting rows of modules when you're not interested in selecting all. ______________

Selection box and a ctrl-click instatarget would be perfect. It's really clumsy right now.

Yeah excellent idea. A better reactivity from the UI would be welcomed. Less clicks = more reactivity = more time for tactical choice of your target.
I would like as well get rid of this delay existing between the moment when you point your cursor on a line in a menu, and the corresponding submenu actually pops. This is annoying as well as useless, IMHO.
Finnaly, and obviously, we need shorcuts ! And not ones using CTRL/ALT/SHIFT + stuff... I understand the reason you do this (I think) : to avoid that people use a shortcut instead of chatting. But some of us are used to this, and it is far more efficient when you are used to. So my suggestion is : make a togglable option that forces to use the ENTER key to enter chat... and let us have direct shorcuts for the ones who want them !
Hum, a bit off topic, maybe... well... The selection box is a very good idea !

The order is not constant so can just as well end up targetting and UNtargetting the same NPCs ... --- Implement forum search already!!! |

Make the scanner window have multi select capability, as well as extendig it so the right click menu gets built into it.
Then its a case of 1. hold down shift. 2. click click click click click (on each enemy) 3. let go shift 4. click on "Lock Target" from the implicit menu that is built from the common subset of all the individual selected entities menu's.

Here's another thing too..
You know we have that Look At feature which is pretty cool..
But I think it needs a 2nd option. A different way of looking at the target. And this is easy because this new way I'm talking about. It already exists!
You know how when you hover the mouse over a target icon? How after a few seconds of hovering, the camera will change positions and start tracking that target?
Well that Tracking camera view is pretty cool. But you can't really use it. I mean you have to keep the mouse hovered over the target icon if you want the camera to track the target. Once you move the mouse, the camera goes back to orbiting your ship.
This is what we need.. We need a [Look At -> Track] option. So the camera gets locked in the tracking position for the object you specified.

Definitely a good idea, just don't see how it's related to the zoom box. But yeah that zoom box does sort of blow goats. New collective targetting would be good, and a new zoom function would be cool too in my opinion. Also there should be a quick way to jump to places, it's annoying to have to choose "warp to" and then lenght every single time.

Yeah.. I'm just saying that we will have to remove that icky zoom-box to make this new targeting feature.
Hmm.. Better zooming feature. One cool zoom already exists.
But another cool zoom would be something intergrated into the scanner window. Something that allows you to probe space.
Dunno though.

I already suggested hotkeys for actions on selected targets in a href= http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=79808 target= _blank http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=79808 /a this Thread. With this system the following would be possible:
- select target 1 (In space or on scanner) - press Ctrl-I -> show Info - press Ctrl-L -> target 1 gets locked - select target 2 - press Ctrl-G -> Approach - press Ctrl-L -> Lock - press Ctrl-O -> Orbit (within some predefined distance) - select target 3 - press Ctrl-L -> lock - etc.
this system may be not as fast as a selection frame, but it's definately faster than fiddling around with context menus and allows more functions than just locking. Selecting targets separatly also avoids some unwanted locking, especially if your desired targets are surrounded by drones.

That would suffice. Originally by: Neko Makai 3 WORDS. Auto targeting Module. Of course its rare, and ive never had one. But dont u think that could work?
No.. That has absolutely nothing to do with this thread. Different subject all together.
About the Ctrl+L for lock.. I use Ctrl+L to open the Log window. But adding a hotkey for Lock-Selected would be alright. Think I suggested that a few months ago as well. |

Actually this is a thread on how the original targeting is hard to do. So what i Described is how there is something inside the current system that is used to make easier targeting. So all in all its not a different subject, just a different way to look at it. Besides, if u want so say it has nothing to do with the topic, why not yell at the other guy who suggested about right clicking on scanner. On top of that, posts arnt all in regards to the first post, it sometimes is replying to a post that was made earlyier or above another post, Such as this one.
Of course i may be in fault for not posting a quote in order for some people to mix up my post with a reply to the original author post.

Well what I meant was.. I'm talking about the user interface.
Hmmm.. I couldn't get this named Auto Targeter to auto target NPC ships anyways. I had a pet Blood Raider orbiting my ship at 2km..
He was shooting at me constantly. I made sure he was not targeted, then I activated the auto targeter, and nothing happened.
