Hello,
Installed Ubuntu V8 on my system to try it out (never used anything but windows before) and i'm very pleased with it.
However, EVE will not run :(
As far as I can tell, the game is installed (it downloaded the 700+mb .dat file and went through install.. created EVE launch icon and the EVE configuration option under GAMES).
When I click on the EVE launcher nothing happens. Selecting the EVE config tool i've re-installed it.. nothing.
Then I went to do system tests and I got this message:
You appear to be missing one or more dependencies for the system tests. This could be because your 64-bit system is missing the 32-bit emulation libraries. Without them, the tests and other auxiliary programs will not run.
I'm running a dual core AMD 64bit 4400+ with 2gb ram.
Im not sure where to get the 32 bit emulation libraries.
Help :P

I am in the same boat, just installed 8.04 on my computer to get rid of Vista and have been working the issues. There is a thread in this forum section located Here that I found very useful. Try to stick to the end pages for the most part, as the start of the thread was back in 2004, and things have changed greatly since then.
In short, I downloaded a copy of Wine 0.9.58 and installed that, also got the MS core fonts and put those into the wine registry. That went a long way to solving my problems. I also had to turn off the premium graphics and go back to classic, but to be honest, that doesn't affect me that much, I'll still keep playing.
I am also using Cedega, as it seemed like a good option at the time. However it's a sub fee to keep using it, and personally from what I have experienced so far, Wine works much better and easier.

I believe that cedega as packaged with the eve client from CCP requires no subscription to use.
When you run the config tool and select system tests do they all pass? If not you probably dont have 3d drivers installed. You need to install EnvyNG and get that working proper first. This is common with alot of folks new to ubuntu. The preinstalled vid drivers dont hack it. you need the ones from nvidia or ati.

To be able to alt-tab uncheck "DXGrab" in the General settings tab under "Configure Options" of the configuration tool. |

Yes, you will have to download the client again...
If you don't have nvidia 8800, don't bother and stick with classic.
