There were and still are pirates outside of the Carribean too! Damn Johnny, damn him for blinding us to the real threat of international waters!
Seriously tho. I read last week that a bunch of hostages had finally been set free by pirates outside the coast of Somalia. They'd borded a yacht, taken people prisoner, stolen their stuff and sailed out into nowhere. Hilarity ensued as one pirate was thrown off at their first port because his rifle misfired and he nearly shot the head off a prisoner. Another pirate fell over board and none bothered helping him. A third was killed in a dispute over drugs. Now that's real pirating.

Gatecamping isn't being a pirate.
Can flipping isn't being a pirate.
A small gang of people attacking mining ops in low-sec would be pirates.
A single pilot attacking ratters/missionrunners in low-sec would be a pirate.
At least in my opinion. Piracy is about two things, thrill of the fight and to get plunder.
Alot of times pirates don't even need the plunder, it's merely for the kick of the fight that they instigate fights. The plunder is just a bonus.
So where then is the difference between a pirate who enjoys the fighting and a ganker? There probably is none, and it's merely dependant on the persons point of view. For the player who gets killed, it's a ganker... for the bystander it's a pirate, and for the pirate it's just the fun of the game.
And ultimately, it's for the fun we play. -------------------------------------------------- "Every complex problem has a solution which is easy, neat and wrong!" |

A real pirate is someone who robs people. Expanding a bit further on the topic as it fits EVE, you find that the term pirate is often misused to describe anyone who does anything to anyone.
There are higwaymen who camp gates and blow up ships for the loot. If possible, some of them may randsom their targets.
There are loner pirates who prefer the solo life, and there are groups of pirates working together.
There are privateers who are asked, hired or take it upon themselves to target a specific area or organisation.
Sometimes pirates have been known to mine (you know who you are )
All in all, the term "pirate" as applied in EVE is a very broad term. Robber, Scoundrel, Villain, Hoodlum, Brigand and Highwayman. These are just some of the colourful names I wish people would start using to describe the "evil" people in this game

Yeah and if you watched Pirates of the Carribean 3 then you'd know that Sparrow & Co. teamed up with some arabic and asian pirates too to form the pirate coalition and own those evil evil non-pirates like the heroes they are; so yes pirates and ninjas did live next to one another ^^

How to fund your life with piracy
1. Head to a busy system such as a trade hub
2. Dock at the first station in the list
3. Open a conversation with the first person in the guest list
4. Ask "joo wan buy DVD????" whilst simultaneously showing them the contents of your cargo hold
5. If they want to buy, sell to them and move to 6.
6. Repeat with the next person on the list
7. When you reach the end of the list try the next station
8. Repeat from 2. in a new system

Well, the Carribean is the pirates main area of operation, even today, they all got bases hiddin in coves there (Even the copyright ones, altough they may often be virtual).
As far as the Asian and Arbaic pirats in that movie (which is a work of fiction), none of those were Ninjas (at least not openly). The asian pirates were if I recall correctly Chinese, and we all know that the Chinese got the Shaolins and the Japanese got the Ninjas. So those pirates was most likely Shoalin Pirates.
