Edited by: Soulja on 30/04/2008 10:57:14 Hi people,
I have just been offered a job as a software developer in Coventry (UK), I currently live in London and we as a family are considering a move to Coventry and I'm wondering what people think of the place.
Hope to hear from those that a) live there (or there abouts) already b) have visited often or for prolonged periods of time
In addition it would be great if people would be kind enough to list those areas of (or villages surrounding) Coventry that are 'no go areas' I wanna leave London to REDUCE the risk of being stabbed.
Many thanks.
p.s. Time is kinda of the essence, they expect an answer by 08:00 eve time tomorrow.
** Edit for clarity.. I hope.

You'd think the naked female statues would be a magnet for Mafioso of all nationalities.. It's certainly one of the reasons i'll be happy to live there..

Behold my mathematician's powers: the M25 is a loop, otherwise known as a separating closed curve on a sphere (the earth). I therefore define the outside of the M25 to be the London area, and the inside to be everywhere else. So by your statement, anyone who moves into London is scum. Okay. --------------------------------------------------------------------

Edited by: Valan on 30/04/2008 22:31:41 Sorry but Coventry is a **** hole. I went to college there and worked there for a while. I ended up buying a house. When another career opportunity came along I ditched the place.
Having said that there was one pleasant surprise. I had an awesome meal at a little farmhouse restaurant on the way out to the M69 out from the city centre towards the supermarket and TGI's. On the left next two sets of lights after the fire station. Was about ú50 per head but that was a long while back.
Live in one of the outlying towns and commute. There are very nice areas around. /start sig I love old characters that post 'I've beeen playing the game four years' when I know their account has been sold on. /end sig |

I'm American, but I'd have to say that "sent to Coventry" is so popular of a phrase for a reason. But perhaps things have changed.

"sent to Coventry" comes from the English civil war, where prisoners of war weren't spoken to while in the jails at Coventry.
It has nothing to do with the city itself.

What? It wasn't?
And to think that as a child I wanted to grow up to be a chimney sweep ... that or a fighter pilot ... *sigh* ... well at least there's still Top Gun. Wait ... don't tell me that wasn't a documentary too?

Fortunately, Liverpool is still a wretched hive of scum and villany (you must be cautious), and your car will still lose traction on the carpet of stolen giros and discarded syringes that litter the place as you drive around the city.
You can buy a car stereo and have it fitted for ú15 and in under 10 mins, it'll be removed free of charge too.
Some stereotypes are holding up.
Well done scousers.

Rugby, Leamington Spa, Warwick, Nuneaton.
There are nice places all around Cov. Loads of nice little villages.
Just stay out of Cov suburbs :)

I live in Coventry city centre. I rather like it. There's been a whole load of investment in 'development' recently, so there's actually a fairly good amount of stuff going on.
There's some really good pubs and restaurants.
Two universities also mean there's a lot of ... shall we say 'talent' in the area. (Warwick University is also in Coventry)
Coventry is actually a fairly small city - nothing on the size of London
Areas that it's recommended to avoid would probably be Hillfields, Stoke, Bell Green, and Paradise. But that's more because they're a bit skeezy, than actively hazardous.
Earlsdon, Tile Hill, are fairly studenty, but not really the worse for that. If you are mobile, 'outskirts' of Coventry covers a lot of ground - it's commutable by Birmingham, Rugby, Nuneaton, Bedworth fairly easily.
I don't think you'll be going far wrong - if nothing else, cost of living in Coventry is almost certainly lower than London, and it's on the major train line out of Euston, making 'popping home' relatively easy.
As a family, I'd recommend looking towards one of the outlying villages. Meriden, Allesley, Berkswell, Balsall Common, Ryton-on-Dunsmore are all fairly nice (well, from the POV of this guy, who's driven through them looking at houses).
*shrug* as with all such places, there's good bits, and bad bits. I like Coventry, and am quite happy here, but I'm afraid that doesn't necessarily mean your experience will be similar. -- Crane needs more grid 249km locking? |

As you mentioned that you are moving with a family you might want to check out the Knowle and Dorridge area.
It would leave you with a bit of a commute(m42->a45 by car or Barston station by train), but its not too bad, and it would put you in the catchmeant of several very good primary schools, the excelent Arden Secondary school and Solihul sixth form. |
