Just curious.... anyone out there still play Homeworld?
I'm thinking about setting up a couple games through hamachi, and was just wondering how many EVE players out there have teh game and/or still play it.
Also on a related note, is anyone aware of a 3rd party patch that will fix Homeworld: Cataclysm so it works on a modern system? My copy always crashes 1/3 the way throught the first mission ***** Rule 27: 'Don't be afraid to be the first to resort to violence.' -The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Pirates [schlockmercenary.com] |

YARRRR We Hiigarans are still very attached to our homeworld, and though we still long for all our lost brethren on Kharak, we are glad to truly be home. Our last voyage was an bitter fight to reclaim our roots and it will never be forgotten.

Oh I forgot to mention:
Homeworld 3 to come? EVE mod for Homeworld 2 Video EVE mod for Homeworld 2 Forum thread Also if you've seen EON #9 the EVE mod for HW2 got the cover. Guess what corp the project leader is in. >_> If you haven't played HW2 you should. It was way underbudgeted and rushed, but it's still SO amazing. I love it to death, and it's almost as powerful as the first one. Here's a trailer.
Enjoy.

If you can tolerate the graphics, and different gameplay from HW2, i'd strongly suggest playing the original. The story of that game is the best story of any game that i've ever played - tied with Freespace. KOTOR and Halo are pretty fecking sweet storylines too, though Halo stole a lot from Freespace.
Homeworld, is so amazing... <3333333

Homeworld was/is awesome Cataclysm scared the crap outta me (The Beast) and fun as hell Homeworld 2 was indeed rushed and the storyline was meh, but still a fun game to play.
I've seen a few HW2 mods out there, recently the Eve one. I loved the Star Wars one though. The SSD with all those SD's, booya.

lol The Star Wars one was sweet with the number of different ships and their size relation. It was amazing to watch, but the game play wasn't that great, as it was mostly "just build the biggest **** asap and pwn." At least that's the way i thought it was. I didn't really competetively play it much. The Executor class SSD was obscenely huge. 0_0

I love homeworld 2 and particularlly with the complex mod (though the latest one I think over powers the AI too much).

I never liked the complex mod personally... I do, however, like this one mod... territories mod. It... well, puts territories on the map, and only allows warping through gates... Somewhat similar to eve, actually. I was just thinking, they need to change it so that only small ships can use the gates, and they need to drop beacons to move carriers/bigger |

I played it before but never really got super into it. Trial has it's limits and you can't get it off store-shelves anymore :(
It is a LOT like EVE IMO when it comes to fleet makeup and movement in terms of fleet wars - except its a RTS.
In example:
-The Mothership can jump a fleet (Just like a Titan) -There is fighters, which are treated like units - but they can be loaded into Carriers and Moterships -There is sub-capitals, capitals, and super-capitals - just like EVE. Capitals have hyperdrives - which are basically jump drives. The only difference is you don't need a cynosural field to jump, and you play the game on a single map - so its not like they jump you out of solar-system in a match. Super-capitals are also capable of basically jump-bridging a fleet. -There is battlecruisers, which are like dreadnoughts from EVE. They are expensive but they absolutely rip capitals apart, just like in EVE. -There is a 'Dreadnaught' in Homeworld, but I have never seen it because I only played trial. From what I'm reading its like a Deathstar and can only be seen or acquired in campaign mode (single player).

You defiantly should do that.
As a matter of fact, we need a HW channel ingame as well. That way we can organize combat and such...
And i never played cataclysm. Is it any good? |

Well the different class sizes in both homeworlds goes like this: Fighter, Corvette, Frigate, Destroyer/Capital, Supercapital/Carrier/MS/Battlecruiser. Carriers and Motherships have pitiful firepower, but they are the ships that build your combat ships. You have resourcers that harvest resources units (ru's) from asteroids or gas clouds or crystals depending on which game you are playing. You use these units to research and build ships and upgrade them. I liked how in the original HW you had to build multiple research ships that connected to speed up your research.
As for the races. In HW1, basically there were only 2 races in multiplayer though the only difference was the looks of the ships, and each race had like 2 different ships. In HW:Cataclysm, there were two very different races in multiplayer. HW:Cata was pretty unique. In HW2 there were again 2 different races, and again they were very different. Balance is very good. There are sooo many mods that add more races, more ships, different themes, different game modes, and other things to make the game different.

It should PROBABLY still be on some shelves. If it isn't i'm sure there are definitely still some on used shelves and EBAY.

I'm pretty biased towards it. I never beat or even played much of the single player. It wasn't published by the same company, and is just different than the other two. It also doesn't follow the race as a whole, but a big mining ship that has to evolve to combat this "flood" type enemy called The Beast. There were a lot of new really creative ships and ideas put into it that made the game really unique compared to the rest of the series. I didn't like it initially because it was too different from HW1, when i was expecting a real sequel. I need to fire it up and give it a second chance, because though different, i think it'd actually be a pretty good game.

Edited by: Amastat on 02/05/2008 06:40:31 A Space RTS I had played for years was Star Trek: Armada II. Despite the brand, it was a OK space RTS while it lasted. It's pretty old now, about as old as Warcraft III today.
It had 6 Races, a VAST selection of ships. There was several ways to play and win the game in a multiplayer match, I played it and was very good at it for a while - however the game eventually died off just like every other name with the Star Trek label on it. A lot of the death that contributed to the game was network instablity, hackers, and clanwars/flamewars. I personally felt that the hackers and numerous flamers who chased a lot of the old and new players out of the game did it all in really - It was fun while it lasted though.
This was a very good game if you wanted short but intense fights, or long epic fights too. There was also a array of super weapons each race was capable of building and using too, those were always fun.
The cap on how many ships you can send out was also large if you wanted it to be, so it was very epic having hundreds of ships going across the map engaging in epic battles.
This game is also modded a lil, like homeworld. I loved one mod in particular, and it is professionally done IMO - it's not some basement teenager mod.
ST:A2 - FleetOps
The game is defiantly old by todays standards though, and the amount of people who play it has now settled down to the few stubborn few that cling onto the game and refuse to let go, despite the downfall of the player base. It is in my opinion still one of the most complex and in-deph RTS's I have played - however it is still not a timeless RTS , and in my opinion not a single space RTS has been made yet that deserves a lifetime of praise.
Homeworld is cool - however its way too small scale and simple to really get my think-tank really pumped. Armada 2 did get me interested, but it didn't last and really wasn't meant to be a really good and timeless RTS.
