I'm going to be venturing into low-sec for PVP purposes for the first time, have my rifter build all picked out, and now just need to do a little preemptive reading to minimize the damage.
Can someone direct me to a good newbie guide for PVP? Specifically I'm curious about: where to go to find soloable targets as a newbie, and how to avoid podding.
Thx

1) Try the Guides sticky at the top of this forum
2) Generally, solo-able targets are either a) pilots belt-ratting/mining who aren't really paying attention, particularly in lowsec/0.0, or b) people you meet at random e.g. both warp to the same gate at the same time etc. For Solo pvp you are banking on your ability to hold them, kill them before they can kill you, and that they don't have any buddies nearby to come gank you

Hi, you might find the following sections from the player guide helpful:
Piracy Scanning Ship Probing
additionally the following sections of the Knowlege Base: Kill Rights Aggression timer Sentry guns How to avoid player pirates Security zones & Security status Not getting sec status increase? The criminal flagging system Attacking wanted players Security status and travelling restrictions
and possibly the recruitment forum, where you can find a low-sec pvp corporation.
I¦d start with the actual guides and use the other links as a reference. Have fun and whatever you do: Keep your clone up-to-date and your ship insured ;)

Be wary of 'easy pickings' in belts, as it is quite common for gangs to set up bait in a belt and as soon as you are engaged warp a fleet on top of you.
My advice on the best way to learn to PvP?? Don't rely on some guide, go join a PvP corp and start running in fleets with them. Being in a group of other players almost always helps one to learn faster, especially since, instead of relying on some text on a screen, you are actually getting in there and seeing how things are done. Nothing beats OJT. -=^=-

Just get out there and do it. Honestly, it's the best way to learn. Every fight is different based on your opponents pvp experience, the ship they're flying, their ship setup... those things can't be taught in a guide.
As for targets, look for destroyers, other frigates, some cruisers (be wary of Vexors as they're drone ships and also Thoraxes, as they often have small blasters fitted which will rip through you in no time as well as a nasty supply of drones), mining barges possibly (kill the drones and watch out for corpmates).
Personally I'd recommend finding a system that you like the look of and setting up home their for a week or so. You'll get to know the players in local and from their you should be able to gauge who's a threat and who isn't. Be sure to set up bookmarks and keep warping between them when you have aggression cooldown, and be sure not to engage at a gate or station unless you're fired upon by someone first.
And yeah, baiting is something that seems to be becoming more and more popular by the day, so watch out for those 'easy' pickings. More often than not it's a trap.

Sadly I'll probably be solo PVP for quite some time, as corps bring drama, and I like to enjoy my gaming ^^
Eventually I'll create my own like I always do in MMOs: where I can ensure a zero drama policy.

You are going to find very quickly that EVE is not a solo game.
You may get lucky and find a fight or 2, but for the most part you are going to end up on the explosion side of a X vs 1 fight.
As for the corp drama thing... It has been my experience that any of the real drama that rears its ugly head come with 0.0 alliances and that you will find most small PvP corps, especially ones which will be taking on low sp characters, are for the most part groups of good guys just out to have some fun. Don't let your experience with other mmo's taint your opinions of EVE. -=^=-

Billy Sastard basically said it. EVE is not a solo game, you will just get repeatedly popped if you try to fly around looking for fights.

As far as solo combat goes you >will< have a hard time going solo for long periods of time.
I personally dabble in low sec pvp...Im not really a pirate, I just like to fight. Problem is, I spend 99% of my time trying to find a decently matched fight against something I have a chance of taking down.
When in a group, you are much more likely to find a fight, as you can use tactics and feel more confidant about taking out larger foes.
As far as drama goes...the galaxy is a big place. If you join a corp, get tired of their antics, jump in your ship, fly away, and then resign. (Note: Fly away first...avoid being ganked on your way out of the home system by spurned ex-buddies).
Also...that drama is part of EvE. Politics, backstabbing, honor, trust, and teamwork are all entertwined. If you dont want to deal with that...you will be missing out on a bunch.

Edited by: Baka Lakadaka on 02/05/2008 03:13:06 My advice would be to fit out 3 or 4 rifters exactly the same as the first.
There's nothing worse than getting into a combat situation, getting the adrenaline up, really enjoying it, getting popped, it's still fun, scurrying back to the station under fire, still fun and then suddenly you're faced with going shopping around half the universe for the next 30 minutes to get back out there.
Having a couple of reserve ships, means you can get right back out and get shot up again.
As to avoiding podding, simple. Stay out of 0.0 for now, bubbles will get you podded. As your ship starts to explode (you get a message saying you're out of control around this time) you pick the first planet, asteroid belt or station (even moons are ok in your pod, because unless there's a POS gunner actually manning the station you'll be fine) on the overview and keep hitting the warp button. Once you get there, move on and dock up. Don't linger. The pod's main advantages are that it's quick to warp and hard to lock.....sitting still negates these.

You might scan a thread I started when I first began EVE and moved to low-sec. Lotsa good advice and tips from veterans there. It's linked in the resource thread for rookies stickied above.

It is more fun and you can do more stuff when in a corp but, high sec piracy is a solo affair and works quite well as such. It's cheap, and you can control the scenario if you know the few basic rules regardign agression timers and all that.
To people saying "stop reading and start doing". Not true, read up on stuff, ask questions, come up with ideas and then try them, not the other way round. Question, learn, know, plan, act... it that order.
If you want some specific help on (high sec) piracy convo me ingame, happy to help out. |

Glad to see you enjoyed the course - thanks for the recommendation. Remember that once you've taken our course you can return as Alumni and take the course again for free (space permitting).
