Well... it's not that bad...
What I find it more bizzare is that you actually need to convince your kids to eat the vegetables in the first place. Most of the kids of people I know have no problems at all with eating vegetables, quite the contrary, they can't get enough of'em normally. AND turning down sweets. Yep, you heard right. Kids. Turning down sweets before the meal. I'm serious, I'm not joking. Most kids of people I know, when hungry, prefer a normal meal, including vegetables and all that, instead of an "all out sugar rush" meal. Of course, they don't say no to something sweet after they're not hungry anymore, but only after eating.
So... I ask of you... if most of my acquaintances have no problems with that, why the hell is everybody in the USA making such a big fuss out of it ? Are "your" kids really throwing away the vegetables ? How the hell did you manage to get them to that point ?
Oh... and one more thing... do YOU like vegetables ? And I don't mean "meh, ok, I know I have to eat them" like, but "yummy, want some" like.

I have to agree that it's seriously ********, there can be no excuse for it. It's still better for small children than Aliens though, which left me scarred for a lifetime, I shouldn't have watched it when I was 9 Anyways, it's still tarded like hell, and can't really understand why children have to see speaking objects and animals in shows like this. It seriously messes up their thinking. Also, what's next? A child will grab a knife and open up himself to see the party in his stomac? The creators should be forced to watch their abomination whole day long. |

Raw, not so much. Cooked, oh hell yes. Green beans, carrots, spinach with butter, potatoes prepared in any manner (my favorite is mashed. I'll eat an entire serving bowl if allowed), broccoli and cheese (drool), tomatoes (cherry tomatoes FTW!), and onions. Usually the onions are mixed in with other stuff but I'd eat em by themselves. This was when I was growing up and I still love these vegetables today.
Vegetables I hate even if cooked. Lima beans, brussel sprouts, cabbage, beats (smell is so awful I'll puke), yams and sweet potatoes (will induce violent vomiting. Eventually found out I am allergic to them but I still don't like the taste), and asparagus. Yes, I tasted all of these before forming an opinion on whether I liked them or not.
The main problem with trying to get children to do anything in America is a combination of two things. Disciplining your child here is considered child abuse now and parents treat the TV as a baby sitter and don't actually spend any time with their kids. Children Services will investigate if you hit your child and anything more than a stern talking to has the potential to have your child taken from you. TV is the ultimate baby sitter and its more and more common for kids to be a Latchkey Kid. Children know their parents can't properly spank them as this bull **** is taught in schools so they walk all over their parents. |

I thought this crap was one of those things you only see in movies or somesuch I mean seriously, how bad are things when you can't freaking spank your kid for doing stupid things ? Sure, would you INJURE your kid, that would be irresponsible, and the kid should be taken away from you... but a spaking that leaves the skin slightly reddish when he did a major " bad thing™ ", heck yeah. How the hell else are you supposed to educate the kid if not via pain ?
I mean, you already have a legal system that claims underage kids have no ability to discern right from whong, how in the world can you expect them to respond to "a stern talking" then, since that implies they COULD discern right from wrong !?!
USA... crazy.

I'm in the USA and I know that when I have kids I'll sure as heck spank them if they do something wrong. My parents spanked me when I was little and I learned right away to not do things wrong. Parents these days are just so lazy that they don't want to deal with their children misbehaving, so they end up ignoring them. |

I've read that some vegetables need to be cooked differently for children, I think it might have been because of different sense of taste or something. Brussels sprouts are one that I remember as being a problem. To an adult, sprouts are good, but to a child, they can taste very bitter if not cooked in the right way.
Also, a lot of ready meals, sauces and stuff contain sugar, even in supposedly savoury meals like meat pies. This makes them sweeter and also contain more calories, making people fat, but would do a lot to accustom people to not eat foods that aren't sweet. |

Sad, but it does happen. I was an unfortunate victim of this myself.
When I was in high school I got taken by children services for 3 months because of an incident that happened during a parent teacher conference at my school. I didn't like my English teacher very much. I had no problems with any of the other teachers or staff at my high school, but my English teacher always acted like an arrogant SOB. In fact, thats exactly why my English teacher wanted to speak to my father and me privately during this conference. I called him a SOB right to his face the previous day. When my father asked if this was true I said, "Yeah, I called the son of a ***** a son of a *****.", and I looked right at my teacher as I said it. I didn't see it coming. My father pimp slapped my ass right then and there across the face, with an open hand, in front of my teacher. Left a red mark but thats it. Stung like hell for a few minutes. No bruise. Red mark was gone after an hour or so? He said he never wanted to hear me disrespect another teacher again.
I respect my father and what he did was justified. I was misbehaving and I got punished for it. None of it was over the top. Unfortunately my English teacher had called the police and reported the incident to the authorities. That night 2 police cruisers and a lady from children services showed up and took me into "protective custody". I told them I wasn't going to go with them but they told me if I didn't go with them willingly they would arrest me and put me in juvenile detention (kiddie jail). No formal charges where pressed against my father, but a hearing was conducted where the state took ownership of me as legal guardian. AKA they legally took me away from my parents. The police didn't even arrest my father.
My parents battled the state for 3 months and was finally able to get me back as the state had 0 evidence of this so called "abuse". During these 3 months I was bounced around from foster home to foster home which was absolute hell. One of these homes had 12 teenagers in it whom constantly fought with each other, as well as myself. Not arguing but actual fist fights. I got a black eye from one of the fights, but I managed to knock a tooth out of the other guy and floor his ass repeatedly. Yes, there was much stomping to the face from me to him. He looked much worse when it was all done. The state, of course, didn't care at all this was going on and nothing was ever done about it until my parents finally got custody back.
Laws in this country are ******* stupid as all hell.

That teacher was a SOB for being twisted enough to actually do that I can maybe understand him having a issue with you and doing something awful to you, but it's pretty screwed up he creates chaos like that over something so stupid and insignificant - unless I'm only hearing a fraction of the story.
Your father was justified to slap you for the way you acted, however If I had known the teacher was a ****** up idiot and I was aware of what had happened: I would of backed my kid up and told the teacher a thing or too and leave my kid the hell alone, if my kid was the victim. I would always find out exactly what happened before I punish a kid like that though, it does become abuse when you strike a kid on the drop of a dime when you have don't know exactly what happened.
Schools are as equally ****** up as laws are, they both usually come from the same government afterall. |

My father didn't smack me for originally calling him a SOB. He smacked me because I did it right there in front of his face while staring directly at my teacher while saying it. He would have just grounded me otherwise I'm sure.
Honestly, I would have smacked me too. |

Hrm. Depends I guess. Sloshed on the plate boiled to buggery is never, ever, going to be appetising. But when I was really little I enjoyed digging/picking vegetables from the garden and eating them raw.
