Don't commit to fights if you can avoid it. Kiting tends to work better than close range brawling for solo, on the basis that you can be webbed and short scrammed if you get close, becoming a sitting duck for his gang.
Know the locals and the area so that you're familiar with who flies what and how competent they are. This will help you choose your fights more effectively.

Kiting is good because like the last guy said it helps you to not commit to fights.
Also realize the more you do it the faster you will learn. This is why I tell people to get 10-20 fully fit ships then go pvp that way losses don't hurt as much and it will encourage you to take more risks. Learn How PRO Players Make Billions of ISK and Dominate PVP: http://www.EVEProGuides.com |

I generally disagree with this idea because this normally results in you fitting your 10-20 ships all the same. If you fly the Rifter and want to pvp in it, then you will learn to fly one kind of Rifter, but you will miss out on all the other flavors which have their place and advantages.
My Advice:
Pick the hull that you want to use for getting into solo work. Go buy 10-20 of them. EFT warrior some fits that you think will work. Start with more "conventional" looking fits. Pick one of your fits. Buy the mods to fit 3-5 in that manner. Fly them until you feel that you have a good understanding of how the ship works: strengths, weaknesses, common prey, what to avoid, etc. Once you have this skill/knowledge, try a new fit. Rinse and repeat until you become the Rifter Master (or master of whatever ship you went with). Don't be afraid to try crazy fits too. The bottom line to not making a fail fit is that your ship should utilize it's bonuses and be focused to do a few things well.
Also, test your fits out first before you go out hunting in them. Have a duel to hull with a friend or get on the test server and try it there. This will tell you if you screwed something up or it just didn't work well.

No need to start a new thread for this - where is the best place for solo-frig PvP?
After a long absence from Eve, I am re-educating myself on frigate PvP. So far, I'm sticking to T1. I have plenty of ISK for ships, but I'd prefer to make my really stupid mistakes in T1 ships before I jump to nicer hulls.
I've found that finding relatively fair fights is much harder than actually fighting.
So far, I've cruised out to some of my old deep 0.0 stomping grounds - they are mostly empty. Most of 0.0 is a vast, wasteland. Not like I remember it back in 2007-2009 - when it seemed that people actually ratted and mined.
I've also ventured into Amamake, but fighting "1v1" against dudes with gangboosting alts isn't exactly instructive.
I've had a handful of good fights in HED-GP and some other 0.0 entry systems, but I've also died horribly to BC gangs with lots of bubbles.
Should I be in FW? If so, any suggestions as to which side? Any particular corps to try to impress/look out for?
Or should I be in RvB?
Or should I be looking for a good small gang corporation?
Thank you for your suggestions. |

Mnesarete. Everyone that I know of in Amamake will happily drop their fleet to fleet up with you for a 1v1 - hence no gangboosting. If you want this, you just need to ask.
My advice to people trying to get into frig pvp is to actually start with a dessie. It will be a lot more forgiving than a T1 frig. Also, a dessie can be a great ship for ganking FW plexers doing minor outposts. The other advantage to a dessie is the number of targets that you can reasonably engage.
For exmaple Rifter v Dram = Rfiter diaf, but Thrasher v Dram = dead Dram (if you do it right) Sig tanking is the new black |

When soloing in a frig, this may often be the case, but the only way to avoid it is to not solo. That's the risk involved.
I had a Moa in hull a week ago with my Rifter when his buddy in a Taranis finally showed up to save his ass. This week I was soloing a Moa and to prevent the same thing from happening and not getting the kill, I called in the last guy I killed (since we were chatting about our recent fight) and we handily killed the Moa. If I wanted to do it solo, it would have taken longer and the risk would have gone up accordingly.
If you want to solo there will be times when poeple do unfair stuff and you get ganked, just be ready for it. Now I know for a fact that all Heretics honor 1v1's and ransoms. However, most of the ones who will give you a 1v1 are competent enough to not lose very often - that's the tradeoff there. Sig tanking is the new black |

RvB will give you definite honored 1v1's all the time. We also do regular fleets, daily in my experience and you have people on almost all TZ's. Having left the HS war decs and low sec pvp corp's I can honestly say I have never had so much fun as I have had in RvB. There is a good mix of new pvp'rs and veterans alike so you can get plenty of wins/losses. Look us up.

Confirming that RvB may be one of the best ways to get reacquainted with frig work and duels. From what I understand, "hunting" the way a solo pilot does is limited. I could be wrong here though. Sig tanking is the new black |

Currently solo exists in the following forms: 1) Roam, engage blobs, separate a few and engage - frigates, BCs(eg.Kil2) 2) Ganking Nullsec PVErs - nano ships, cloakies, cloaky nanoed ships 3) Wormhole PVP - learn to probe, very strong solo ship as you might face T3 4) Tanking Ship playing station games or gate aggression games - low-sec/nullsec entrance gates, station systems 5) Suicide ganking in hi-sec - eg. Hulkageddon 6) Hi-sec griefing noobs - eg ninjaing to **** off missioners, messing with cans 7) Griefing PVErs in low-sec 8) Nullsec transport route ganking - SBs on JBs, dictors 9) Duels 10) RvB
Pick your flavor, train the necessary ship, understand the good areas for it, understand and refine the tactics for it. It is actually much harder than it looks, it requires a good regional knowledge, good piloting and fitting skills and mastery of game mechanics. Everyone in this thread has been suggesting for the OP to try "kiting".
I contend that this is the preferred style of fighting for little girls.

Sadly, no one else agrees with this. I dont have a problem with people kiting, but it results in many non-fights.
I can't find anyone to fight until the end. In the last week, I have been in at least 4 solo fights where once I got the opponent to half shields, they warp out. I would understand if the person was flying a vigilant or cynabal (&@$?@! The cynabal), but these people have been in cheap T1 ships. Every time I DO actually get someone to hang around, it's only because they are waiting on their gang mates to jump/warp into you. I had a Naga and Talos both into armor with a T1 cruiser, and got the gang-bang for my troubles.
I'm not complaining that people kite, or call in gang-mates - just using that as an example that true 'soloing' is hard to find. |

A major issue of EVE is the fact that it is much too easy for fleet members to come and help. They just need to warp to zero and viola the blob is around you. This is the reason why kiting is currently the king of solo hunting. If you are in a brawler only engaging targets Inside of dead space plexes gives you some chances to avoid being blobbed. Therefore I strongly advocate that faction warefare plex mechanics should be extendet to other areas like 0.0. More plexes, more chances for small scale engagements! |

1) find a way to make a fair amount of isk :) That's actually just 1/2 joking. If you want to PVP to win more often than you lose then you're going to need to invest in better fittings than the other guy had.
1b) on the same token, specialize in a few ships and don't cross train too soon. It's seductive to be able to fly everything but flying everything badly is a recipe for failure. Flying a few ships well will get you far more kills in the long run.
2) Be patient and pick your fights carefully. If you just throw yourself headlong into every fight you can get then you will lose the vast majority of them. You really need to have a feeling for what's winnable and what isn't. If you don't have that feeling then there are a few ways to get it. (a) make 100 mistakes on tranquility doing crazy stuff that got you killed (b) look for solo kills on the killboards and see who is killing what with what and (c) use sisi for experimenting.
3) learn how to probe and/or work with someone who knows how to probe. Using a scout is really essential and using one that can probe for you if needed means you'll find a lot more targets to attack.
4) Did I say be patient? Oh yeah... be patient. Some days you'll find 100 targets but only 1 of them is something you can engage in the ship you're in. It never seems to fail that the days I go out in an AF, all I find are destroyers and the days I go out in a vagabond all I can find are T3 cruisers ratting. It can be frustrating but it's worth the wait for the times you find a good target.
5) if you're doing it in low-sec then try to get your sec status below -5 as quick as you can. You'll find a lot more people willing to enage you around gates that way, which makes life that much easier.
6) finally, develop a good nose for the baiting game. There's nothing more depressing than finally attacking that ship you've been stalking for an hour and 6 of his buddies land on you. Even now I still miss sniffing it out sometimes. The other day I thought I was attacking a hurricane and suddenly it turned into a hurricane, 2x zealots a proteus and 2x guardians. They were very good though, keeping the whole fleet hidden in the one place I didn't think to look.... a wormhole with an exit in the system where I was working.
