Kestrel, load it up with rockets, get a few mates (caldari are pretty rubbish at solo PvP) and go shoot stuff and learn with cheap ships. You WILL lose plenty of them but there's no better way to learn. |

If I was going to use a Kestrel, I'd use missles. Probably better that YOU don't get into web range because that means you'll also be in Neut range (which means your a goner) if you're fighting something bigger.
You're going to be able speed around most ship types fairly easy so there is no need for you to web. Just stay in scramble range (20km or so) and shoot your missles from a distance. The only thing I could think of wanting to use rockets for is if you plan to get up close and personal with another frig (which I also wouldn't recommend for a Kestrel)
Good luck. |

4 missile launchers are a pain to fit on a Kestrel. It just doesn't have the fitting without decent skills. If you're in a agng though you can probably get away with using missile and gimping some of your set up.
Or you could try something like;
x4 Rocket Launchers x2 web, x1 warpscram x2 Ballistic Systems
...or try fitting a damage control for some extra tank, or the biggest plate you can fit (might need an MAPC to get a biggish one on), or mix and match whatever, I'd advise against an armour repairer, waste of cap on this ship.
Basically when you find a target you warp in first and act as bait. When you're engaged your mates warp in an gank. The idea is the plate gives you some extra survivability. Or you can sit in a belt waiting for someone to come and get you and use the same tactic.
Just be careful what you're engaged by. Most cruisers will probably rip you apart but frigs should go down quick if they've got 2 webs on them and all the gang firepower. |

You can fit four standard missile launchers on a Kestrel with the help of a Micro Auxiliary Power Core... with half decent skills you can even fit a BCU to go along with your warp disrupter, small shield extender and afterburner.
There's a lot of viable fits with this ship and it also doubles as a respectable little lowsec courier or salvager!
You can do most L2 missions in it also ;) |

Quite frankly, if you ever fly with a group of people for PvP, no Caldari ship is as effective with a very low skill-point investment as the Blackbird. Just don't go fitting up Gankbirds and trying to solo... that's a road to no-where :P ----- In EVE - never bring a knife to a knife-fight. |

With my solo PvP orientation, my usual answer to this is "Train for a Rifter or an Incursus." I tend to relegate Caldari ships as being best suited for PvE.
However, once I get past "solo" and think in terms of small-gang PvP, several Caldari ships force themselves on my mind. The Crow is one of the best interceptors in the game, delivering the best DPS while filling the traditional interceptor role of tackling (just remember "best DPS" is relative here). Nearly every other interceptor filling a tackler role has to wait for the target to turn its attention on someone else before they can disengage their MWD and slow down enough to do some damage. (Because of this ability, the Crow is actually viable for solo PvP vs. a number of frigate and cruiser-sized targets.)
As has been mentioned, the Blackbird is another low-skill Caldari ship that is welcomed with open arms into small gangs. A Blackbird + just about any other ship makes for a fearsome duo, especially against gunboats.

Edited by: Amastat on 07/05/2008 10:59:45 If your talking the Caldari missile route to start off with, the ladder you will want to climb is: Kestrel >> Caracal >> Drake >> Raven
In terms of what boat to start in, the Kestrel for sure. It is the only true missile frigate in the Caldari fleet. You should be able to buy a Kestrel and fully outfit it with some standard and/or low-end named gear for a couple hundred-thousand ISK. In no way should it cost over 1-million ISK unless you go crazy with expensive fittings to start the game off with - unless you can afford that, quality is always a good thing. ____________________

You know the Caldari can shoot guns too right?
2x Micro Auxiliary Power Core
1MN Microwarp Drive J5b Phased Warp Scram X5 Prototype Webifier Medium F-S9 Shield Extender
2x Light Neutron Blaster II 2x Rocket Launcher II
Lasts a lot longer than a rocket kestrel, and does almost as much damage. Far better beginner's tackler for the Caldari in my opinion.

looks like a merlin to me =)
Caldari can PvP, even solo
someone mentioned a nice path there from kessie to raven, but you can throw plenty of other ships along the line nano cerb or onyx, even neuting scorp vs. smaller targets are pretty good.
and caracals are seriously underestimated =) thank god so many carebears fly caldari. makes it easier for opponents to underestimate our ships ;]
just try thinking outside of the box when fitting them

For solo I'd much rather have a merlin rather than kestrel, prob would for gangs as well but I suppose if all your sp is in missiles your a bit restricted tbh.

Nope its a Leviathan fit! I assumed the 4 mid slots would have made it obvious I meant a Merlin. __________________________________________________ Sup brosef! Destry's Lounge is looking for a few good drunks - contact me in game.

I'd use a caracal, with the right setup it is actually quite nasty (although may kill stuff fairly slow)
