Hey guys, just wondering on the importance of learning skills. I've been passively skill training up a military character. I have about 3 million SP's and running lvl 3's in a domi. I'm about to finish up t2 reppers and i have t2 hardeners and I'm gonna attempt lvl 4's. However, i was wondering, if I'm gonna be playing this game for a while would it wise to go ahead and spend a month or so training up learning and all hte basic skills to five and the advanced to four? Or should i just go on working on drone/cap skills? How important is it and what would experienced players advise me to do? Thanks

Go ahead and train them if you are going to keep playing. Since you already are making isk with level 3:s just take the plunge it will cut down your training times alot. And get cybernetics 3 and set of +3 implants too.

Edited by: MotoMissles on 07/05/2008 01:30:40 Evemon works wonders. Google it download it, you won't regret it.
Evemon is a skill planning tool that will let you create a training plan, and will let you know if training a learning skill will cut down your training time in that plan.
So, open up Evemon, queue up a month or two of training, and let it tell you whether you'd save time (you almost certainly will) by training some learning skills.

Train as much as you can stand, 4/3 shouldn't take too long.
Then take a break by training real skills until you feel the need to go back.
You should be able to get them up at some point, and it won't hurt you too much to wait. The important thing is that you are enjyoing the game |

I stand corrected, it was Science III that you also need for cybernetics.

You logic is a bit "out of track"...
My suggestion:
1) Make a new Plan for a full T2 fitted Dominix. The whole thing: Gallente BS lvl 5, T2 Rails or Blasters, T2 Heavy drones, T2 tank, and then some support skills like Drone Interfacing 5 for drones, most / all cap skills to lvl 5 etc.
2) Add the "Suggestion"-skills EVEmon suggests (click the button on the bottom bar of evemon). As you would probably guess, all "suggestions" are for Learning Skills. Now, compare "before and after" learning skills. I wouldn't be surprized if your "toon" saved 1 month or so of training for the above plan only, despite having to spend 1 month or so just in learning skills.
And guess what? Learning skills are there to stay. Even after you reach your "full T2 fitted Domi"-goal. Join the Biggest Greek Corp! www.Mythos-eve.com - Join Mythos Channel in game!

train 4/4 on learnings or even 4/3 do the longer ones when your away for a bit [like this happens ;-P] Scicene 3 + Cyber 1 for +3 implants - help quite a bit if you need to train for a mod | ship in the mean time then do it

Edited by: Spud Gunn on 07/05/2008 17:51:04 If you have the patience, or are training an alt, it's well worth going nuts on learning skills right from the word go. I am currently training an alt to 5 basic/4 advanced with +4 implants, and between that and his better base stats (Achura LOL) he already trains most skills almost 50% faster than this character (4/3 learnings and +3s). I think I started him a little over a month ago, and by next week I'll actually be able to take him out of his home station and do something.
However, for a main character, that's boring as hell. I'd train Cybernetics 1 ASAP and use the full set of +1s you get from your tutorial missions; do basic learnings to 4 as soon as practicable; do advanced learnings to 3 as soon as you can afford the books; switch in +2 and then +3 implants as soon as you can get them without putting too big a dent in your wallet. I got a mostly complete set of +2s from doing storyline missions, and used a bunch of LP to buy +3s as soon as I could reasonably afford them. If you hold off until you're doing L3 missions you'll get +3 implants from there as well, although it's annoyingly random and you're probably better off just buying the implants and then selling any you get from storylines.
Yes, it's hardly optimal, but you have to ask yourself if you want to be flying a frigate for your first two months while you "get your learnings done", or if you'd rather forego a couple of weeks' reduced training time in your first year in favour of getting into a bigger ship, fitted properly, and doing more challenging missions and stuff sooner.
Edit: It's not until I extended my skill plan up to about 200+ days that EVEMon finally recommended I train Clarity to 4, and even that only shaves off about 2 days. Having a long-term goal is one thing, but having an excessively distant one will just dishearten you - breaking even four years down the line is a bit of a waste when it makes you so bored of the game that you quit after three months.

Thanks for all the input guys :) i appreciate it. I entered the 4/3 learning plan on evemon and it gave me 8days which is much better. And i tried the suggestion option on my 61 day plan and it knocked it down to 48!

Edited by: b1zz on 09/05/2008 10:06:17 I think you'll find most 6 month players who plan to play for longer than a year have the full 5/4 learning set and access to +4 implants. That's the standard setup and it's what you should be aiming for, the sooner the better. It may be boring learning them but they affect your real world time which is why they are so valuable.
edit: clarification

If you see yourself playing this game for over a year yes train the basic learning skills to level V now and all advanced to level IV. They start paying off around 9-12month mark. So if you're going to quit in a few months then makes no sense to train those really.

learning training plan first train up on memory and int, basic lvl4 and advanced at least lvl3. After that train up on your highest attribs for basic 4 and advanced lvl3.
also remember to bring the learning skill itself up to level 4 as well.
all of this shouldnt take that long but you will see great improvements in skill training time. Specially with the level 5 training. . |

I'm a fairly new player to EVE, and my main character is only 2 1/2 months old. I really wanted to train support skills to make my tank better, but I figured that the learning skills would eventually give me an edge over a few friends that joined the game at the same time.
Little did I know how much...
My main character has 2.8 mil sp, which may seem a little low, but when you think about it, alot of those points are into advanced learning skills. Right now I have every learning skill at level 4 except for perception, which I haven't bothered to train yet (maybe after I get Learning 5 ). I'm ecstatic that I made this choice: I train twice as fast as 2 other players that joined the same time as me. I also have a full set of +4 implants, which were also completely worth it. I'm watching my tanking skills shoot up while my friends sit there and wait days for basic skills.
However, I do plan to play EVE for a while. This is the first MMO I've ever tried, and I'm hooked. For some people who just casually play the game, learning skills may be a bit of a turn-off. Depends on how you play, I guess.

I'm just now getting my advanced learning skills to 4, and Learning to 5. I've been playing about as long as some of my friends and they're about 3-4M SP ahead of me. :( __________
