Hello,
Would'nt it be great if you could sit in your covops cloaked, watching the enemy on a gate and listen in to their communications?
This would only be possible in a covops, and would use a new module for the hi-slot called a listening device, or something...
This skill and the accompanying module, would be chance based just like scan probes, and its effectiveness would increase in proportion to skill level.
Also you would have an increased chance of intercepting a communication, the closer you are to a target. Ie, if you at 2000 metres from the enemy you have a better chance than if you were at 70k. However, you would also be at a greater risk of being de-cloaked and discovered.
Should you get a hit and be sucessful in picking up enemy communcations, this would display the chat to and from whoever your device is focussed on.
Imagine being able to learn emeny locations, plans, loadouts, who's flying what ship etc...
This would open up and broaden the whole covops business, into more of an inteligence gathering role.
Presumably certain methods would be developed by protagonists to limit their exposure to this practice, but all sides in a war would be able to covertly eavesdrop and gain crucial inteligence on each other.
What do you think? Bad idea or worth development..?

Anything that promts an increasing need to metagame is bad. Giving a way to "listen to" chat will just give ample reasons for people to migrate to out-of-game communication methods.
Nice idea, and it would work wonderfully if the game would have been real-life. But as long as one can just fire up ventrilo/teamspeak/IRC to be 100% safe from "eavesdropping" skills... bad idea.
Sorry.

Im sorry to have to say it, but you are dead right..?
Might not be a reason to abosolutely discount it, but it could have some utility. Not everyone uses vent etc all the time.
But yes, you have picked the fatal flaw in my post, thanks..!

I can only imagine the vile things people would start saying in their conversations, with the sole intent of hoping that they would be heard... lol

And people tend to speak privately to each other about private things i.e. things pertaining to their personal life, I mean sure its a game not a chat room, but there are still people (like me) that use eve to keep in touch with family and friends... yes there are people that do that.

Edited by: Slagie on 09/05/2008 17:16:01 that is an interresting idea...how bout if there was a way to scramble or jam the chat chanels...say one person jumps in to a system turns on the jamming mod which would disrupt everyone in that systems lets say local chat so they can talk in local or see whos in local...that would would make a great tool for fleet ops, woundlt let the the other side see how many people are in the system so they dont what size force to bring in. maybe if your in a fleet with the person thats jammnig you can still see the chat? idk just a thought.

I'd prefer it to jam personal and corp channels, almost everyone I know doesnt use local in 0.4 and lower so forcing them to use local would be interesting.

that would be good to...maybe all chat in that system is jammed? i was think more along the lines of hiding your movements in the system...if people cant see whos in local they dont really have a good idea of how big a force is. jamming personal/corp/fleet/ w/e would be cool too

Yes to this idea.
One skill to remove your presence from local. Another skill to give you the ability to hide others who aren't stealthed from local ie. your fleet comrades.

imho we dont need more "mandatory" skills, it would just be something everyone had to train, much like learning etc.

Skill? No, no skills recuired.
But the listening device?! OMG YES!
Tactically it would probably be ****e, but if you added in functionality as spying on "set destinations", "called target" and such aswell i'd make a very worthwhile investment. In some groups beeing able to see who's the fleet booster would be worth it aswell. Killing off the guy with the 10% shield, armor, targetting range, locktime and speed bonus would sure be worthwhile.

Edited by: z0de on 10/05/2008 20:01:31 No thanks, I use the the chat for fun as much as 'serious' in game stuff. If you start stopping me from talking to friends or try to listen in on my most recent pub venture, I'll just be forced to play windowed mode with irc. All important stuff happens on vent or teamspeak anyway as it does for most half decent corps.

This however would be limited to ingame stuff and could be very useful.
