All games have a limited lifespan.
The old is eventually overtaken and surpassed by the new.
Is Eve Online beginning to show it's age and have the recent expansions failed to re-energise and revitalise things in the way that many players hoped for?
Please note that this post is not a reflection of any views I might hold, but is merely the result of some 'ponderings' I engaged in recently.

Joke aside, what alternatives are there? If I remember well Miz was playing Warcraft 3 Dota at some point. Never heard of him since.

Trinity wasn't that exciting - many players are still playing with the old graphics. But the next two expansions they are promising us is factional warfare then walking around inside stations, both I bet a lot of players are looking forward to. Unless they screw up both really badly I'd say we have another 2 years for sure, and 2 years is a long time.

Maybe because Earth's population is growing exponentially and internet is becoming widely available.

EVE from the very beginning could always be described as the following: Completely hit or miss with new players A constant grind, which ultimately leads to burnout--everyone experiences it eventually.
However, more times that not, people burnout, but realize it's a good opportunity to continue training their character, so a month or two from that point, they're pleasantly rewarded with all these new skills / abilities.
EVE is the kind of game that if you're sitting in ventrilo listening to a gang on an OP killing a bunch of crap, it pretty much gives you a boner and makes you want to play RIGHT NOW. But then you load it up and it's like, what the hell is this?
You really have to break through a lot of useless grinding and waiting to find the parts of the game that are truly enjoyable.
And the people that have found that part of the game won't be going anywhere for a long time. There's simply no replacement right now.

I think world population growth peaked in 1987, so it isn't still growing exponentially. But I bet there are still plenty of people who would like to play internet spaceships if they had the chance, especially if the game world becomes deeper and offers new activities. I think EVE needs to become easier to get into, but without dumbing down.

I thought I heard TradeWars graphics were so complex that they would cause a Voodoo 3 to start on fire if you played for more than a couple hours in a single sitting. It was with the Voodoo 4 line that they added a fire suppression system.

Why only two years? Where did you get that from? Surely, if CCP keep it interesting with expansions, the lifespan is way beyond two years?

I'm playing eve around 3 years, every 10-12 months am getting bored and getting inactive. But always getting back, there is no alternative, especially that game is so complex that you can learn and play new ways each time you get back. Eve is specially interesting when you have unlimited isk and you can just enjoy game play and waste time the way you prefer.

Insult to several ancestors.

Eve has always focused more on its "sandbox" approach to gameplay, rather than focus on cutting-edge graphics or other "features" that require cutting edge new content. I see Eve as the Starcraft of the MMO world: cursed/blessed to be around many years after its technical overshadowing.

If an even remotely decent mmorpg came out I'd start playing it primarily and just play even very casually since I play for free and could continue playing for free for the rest of my natural life as well as my kids and grandkids lives. Which is why I will prob play eve for a long time, no money means why not keep it active.

This... so long as I keep making enough isk per month to cover my play costs for my accounts I'll keep on playing.

So just because it is free you will play it for the rest of your lives while you will only play casually a better game (no matter how much better) just because you have to pay for it. FFS, people don't play games because they are free but because of their entertainment value. Live your life to the max as opposed to killing time. P.S. You two wouldn't be brothers, would you?

I play to have fun.. it just so happens that the amount of fun I have is more than the work is required to get this fun for free. Ergo I have fun for free.

Fixed that for ya
You could also just substitute RL for MMO if'n ya wanted. Really seems like a perspective issue to me; solely based on opinion. Kinda like, 'Eve is dying, if you say it enough it might happen'.
IMO (of course), any game you play which has rewards you care about will have a certain risk/task associated with it to make it's reward all the more sweet. Would you give a rat's @$$ about your first (insert your triumph here) if:
- there was no glory in the triumph of defeating a tough enemy? (i.e. the goal in its entirety were just plain easy)
- it were just given to everyone?
Seriously folks, if you're not finding the adventure in the game, maybe it isn't for you... I 'grind' all the time. It's called playing the game. Maybe you only enjoy a small part of it, but some of us really don't like this incessant whining about Eve losing its vitality, when all its really losing is your specific interest.
So... can I have your stuff?
Otherwise, kindly STFU.

If paying your monthly subscription for a MMORPG is a problem then I totally agree, otherwise not.

Edited by: YouGotRipped on 13/05/2008 23:05:54 Has anyone played NEXUS: The Jupiter Incident? It's a rather old single player game (graphics is amazing though) resembling Eve, anyone that likes Eve is guaranteed to like Nexus. It has a lot of ideas that could benefit Eve btw (being able to scale power consumption between weapons shield and engines being just one, don't want to spoil the fun)

EVE excites a different part inside people. It's not explainable.
The experiences you can get playing/listening/being involved with something in EVE do not compare to anything else, period.
I'm not saying you can't have fun playing EverQuest, I'm simply saying EVE is on a completely different level.
