Edited by: FellRaven on 12/05/2008 12:49:21 Edited by: FellRaven on 12/05/2008 12:48:38 Edited by: FellRaven on 12/05/2008 12:47:50 During the recent conflict in the North there were several posts which grossly misrepresented the position regarding the progress of the War.
Now I believe that those that made these posts intended them to be a rallying cry for their side(Side A)and a blow to the morale of their opponents(Side B). But do they really achieve these ends.
If you are actively involved on either side then you will see these posts for what they are.
Side A could see them as an effort to salvage something as the war is already lost or at least not winable in the battlefield so needs instead to be won on the forums and this would hurt morale. Those not already involved will see no urgency in joining.
Side B could see it as similarly as a sign of A's weakness and there inevitable victory or may even be enraged by all the insulting and harden their resolve still further. Further if B have not committed all their forces such posts might be read by those not already involved as indicating that they are at risk and need to get involved.
Now I have deliberately not mentioned individuals or alliances here. This is not a new thing to EVE, remember "Dining in NOL", anyway lets see if we can share without smacking?

It's part of the game. Of most games actually. And I think it would be pretty boring without it.

Depends, some smack is funny and entertaining, some is pathetic...overall I like that we have a forum to antagonize each other, though some people take it too seriously...

In a way it is sad because it makes it hard as a bystander, as in not involved, to get a clear picture of what's really going on. Then again, it's also a matter of winning those bystanders sympathy in that it might make a difference in the future about who is fighting who and for what cause. i don't believe the morale aspect is significant since those involved will most likely have a pretty goog picture of what's going on unless leadership is blatantly ignorant and or good at duping its members. The most important factor, in my opinion, would be to justify the own entity's worth and rationalize the outcome. alot of people takes this too seriously. like in this case in branch, "we would have kicked your ass if only we had equal numbers", "you had to nap everyone and his grandma to take us down", etc, etc.

Edited by: Skjorta on 12/05/2008 13:43:20 Smack is good as long as it doesn't cross into rl threats/insults.
Rather have a smacker than a pompous white knight douche bag any day, I mean look at bruce. They are boring as hell because you see the tag and you know the post is going to be something like the following: "Much respect, we both had so much fun. Nobody lost this battle because we both won in fun. We may have lost 10x more ships than you, but much respect and we love you so much".
The enemy doesn't need morale....and I'm sure brucies can see through the BS. Not really sure what it accomplishes.
I'm sorry, that stuff isn't fun to read at all.

Smack is good, smack is right, and smack is what makes the game interesting.
ItĘs a motivating factor to rally people around a cause. ItĘs used as propaganda for most part, either to motivate own or to demoralize the opposing troops. Some people use it better then others and some make a mistake of putting their friends in a position to have to back up their big mouths in game, but thatĘs what makes it fun.
Most important thing is to not cross the line. ItĘs a game after all with all of the same kind of people that love gaming and EVE. That needs to be kept in perspective, but aside of that, smack is healthy for the game.

There is a reason that smart people don't post as often on CAOD, rather other forum sites which are moderated properly.
The forum mods don't seem to have the slightest clue on how to clean up the forums, they rely on targeting specific forum personalities for mundane reasons and temp banning them, thus forwarding the thought that they are actually doing something to make CAOD a more pleasant place to discuss things. However, it's a double edged sword, the majority of the forum posters on CAOD seem to have the maturity of a fecies slinging chimp and cry like a 6 month old baby when someone calls them on it.
I suppose it's just where culture is headed these days.
