Am I right in assuming that heavy assaults are the weapon of choice for PvP whilst the heavy's are for PvE?
thanks

No. Heavies and hams are for pvp. They can also both be used for pve. Different scenarios, different tools. Pvp and pve ar eboth vast enough to room both sets of tools.

In principle I agree with this statement but in general HML's are the cruiser sized missile of choice for PVE while HAM's are the cruiser sized missile of choice for PVP (also, Assault Launchers for speciality tasks such as nano interdiction).
As a rule, without substantial range bonuses HAM's are often a pain to use thanks to their short range ESPECIALLY if your ship doesn't come with a range bonus. They also posess fairly high fitting requirements leaving little room for tank.

While true, most ships that can use heavies well, can also perform very well with hams, for ratting for example.
Caracal, Cerberus, Drake, Nighthawk, Sacriledge(well always ham) etc etc...
People underestimate the option of using close range weaponry for ratting.

HAMs on a Cerb are scarcely a close range weapon :).
I find I use both - for mission style PvE, heavys are more what I tend to use. For ratting PvE... erm either really.
PvP too, it depends on the situation - much like whether to use railguns or blasters in fact ;)

Rating is just a small portion of the PVE experience - belt rats do not generate anywhere near the DPS of the tougher missions and thus a ship can easily make due with a skimpy tank.
Missions on the other hand often have you fighting targets at fairly long ranges, especially for level 3 and 4 missions.
I agree with you in principle - that either can be used for pvp or PVE. I was pointing out that certain aspects of the weapon systems made them better suited for certain tasks.

Edited by: Leeluvv on 14/05/2008 14:12:58 The important thing to note about HAMs and HMs is their different fitting requirements.
HAMs need more PG, but less CPU than HMs, so it isn't as simple as 'which one shall I fit today'. I have a Drake that gets more DPS out of HMs, as I can't fit 3 x BCS II with the HAMs.
As usual, it is the big picture that counts, not just the mod you are fitting. Big picture = total ship fit, ammo loaded, target type, fleet size, etc...

Nothing better than busting into a pulsegeddon busting up rats even 50-odd kilometers away.
