Heard from someone who heard something from someone who repeated it to me, that CCP was bought out by Sony. Is this true? If yes, has CCP gone mad? Sony ruins everything it touches.

Their first expansion will be that we get to go down to planets and beat furry woodland creatures to gain experience that will let us be more knowledgable in Quantum Physics and other advanced fields of science. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

If you have read anything about the DEV's of this game you will have realized that this is not just a profit/loss venture. This is a labour of love. I cant imagine this game ever passing hands.

They aren't selling out to Sony, it's all going to Ubisoft. Shiva's being re-written as I type, and when it's released, everything's going to be in French, all the graphics are going to be massively stylised and all the gameplay is going to be revamped into peculiarly surreal puzzle-solving.
So I hear...

OMFG!!!!! Cleaning the water off my screen (and out of my nose)
However, let me take a moment to point a few things out. Sgt Slate is old school EQ, back when they had the Vision(TM). As we all know now, the Vision(TM) is dead. The origional EQ was great, and I will always hold a place in my heart for those first few days in innothule swamp killing froglok tads and kobold runts (never to be seen again sadly, they gave my city away to some ******* frogs), but the modern EQ is a thing of great complexity. It's impossible to know everything there is to know in EQ currently. Thats not really true with Eve. More than that though EQ is a success story, no matter what gripes you have with them (and I have plenty) it's a great game (if you have the time).
Here are a few things to remember.
1) EQ = one of the most successful MMOs of all time.
2) EQ wrote the rulebook for redefining MMO success.
3) EQ is still going very strong after over 5 years of release.
4) EQ actually puts out regular expansions. These expansions have new content. Sure the balancing may not be there, and the expansions may not be quite finished, but at least they put things out there.
5) If something is broken long enough they eventually get around to making an attempt at giving people the perception that they are in the process of fixing it.
6) Giving people what actually sells = the same as giving them what they want. If they didn't want it, they wouldn't buy it. I have tons of problems with the dev teams at sony eq, but they are extremely worried about their bottom line. If Sony ran Eve, they would fix many of the grief tactic loopholes that exixt currently in Eve instead of denying the problem exists. This is because the number one thing we learned from EQ was that an environment free of griefing SELLS. People don't like griefing and grief tactics. The proulation of the non PvP server vs the PvP servers PROVES this. The difference is that EQ actually has an end game not reliant on PvP whereas Eve does not.
a) Alt corp griefing wars (at least in safe space).
b) Kestral ganking in high sec space.
c) ore theft without a viable response.
7) You can also bet they would put in an actual end game. If you keep the top corps engaged in a race to get to/kill the end game bosses, it means less time for them to gate camp noobs because they are bored. It would also implement some new facets of the game for people to persue, and give cooperative ventures a real purpose.
Now I know EQ has it's problems (I have played for over 5 years on various servers, and while not "uber" I have led raids are far into the game as tier three PoP successfully.), but content is not one of them. There is TONS of content atm. The problem is that there is no real viable path for true newbies to get to the end game without spending 8-12 hours a day logged in and hacking and slashing. It's a GREAT game, but only if you have tons of time. I myself love the Eve skill system, the way it nerfs powerleveling, and how it allows the casual gamer with not much time to advance in the game, but lets face it, it's needs a lot of improvements/upgrades. I would venture to say it needs less than Eve though, but then again, it's a lot older than Eve. In 4 years maybe there won't be so many differences.

Edited by: Pete Edwards on 30/04/2004 12:42:57 Actually, odd though it sounds, it wouldn't surprise me if they did. After the record 10000+ simultanious online players, Sony might see this as an oppertunity to kill EVE to try and get us to go play their S*H*I*T*E(!) Star Wars Bolloxies.
(please don't edit this post, people have to know how lame that piece of crap game is!)

Excellent point. Everyone has their own ideal version of a perfect MMORPG. For EVE, it looks like the dev's version (the one we are playing) is a place where griefing is king. That's ok, but it leads to a problem for the new players starting up: How do you PvP against a player that has been active for 10 months? Well, you don't. You could join a corp, but then the corp will be working on your behalf. And even if you wanted to "pay back" someone, EVE's mechanics makes that very very hard. So really, it is setup for a perfect griefing playground. And the flames on these boards proves it
So how would I do it? Well, like EQ, you need a end game. The ubber boss to take out. This adds content to the game, and gives high level chracters a target (rather than the newbies). But I think a better way would be to introduce back into the game permanent death. Have your aviator age. You start out at the young age of 18, work your way up through the profession you chosen, and then die (hopefully at a ripe old age of 80+). This all happens within 3 months of real time. No transfer of skills to your alts. Have up to 3 alts, so you can be "training" other aviators up. That way, the newbies are constantly coming into the game at the same level as the vets. The only difference between vets and nebies is the experience a vet has with the game mechanics. In this playground, griefing can be a fairer endeavour.
