This game has now given a free pass for pirates to operate in hisec systems as we can no longer anchor cans in 0.8 or above systems and can mining is now the only profitable way to mine. I have only been a miner for a short peroid of time and I have noticed that now that this new system is in place can flipping is becoming alot more profitable than the mining itself.
If this was there intent then i applaud what they have done in making this game more profitable to be a pirate then a miner, however if this was not there intent then I would suggest that you review all the evidence and make it illegal to can flip in the systems 0.8sec and above where the new chars to this game are usually found mining or they could make it so that can flipping lowers your security status as this would make it so that these pirates would eventually have to move on to the lower sec systems instead of staying forever in the safe zones.
It is becomeing apperant that mission running is becoming more profitable than mining because it is faster and less chance of some jackass running in and stealing all that you have worked hrs for. This is not some random jackass I am talking about because in the time that I have been mining I have been can flipped over 45 times and I havent even been mining for a month yet
If anyone has another idea on how to stop the NEWB KILLERS I would really like to hear them however it would be very annoying if all you do in a reply is say some stupid remark like "NOOB L2P pirates are part of the game" as i already know this however pirates that only attack new players are driving people away from this great game by making the start all that much more difficult and its hard enough already.
Just so you dont think im just begging for stuff for myself I would like to point out that I have been mining in a 0.5 sec system since I was last can flipped in a 1.0sec system and I have not been can flipped again since because this new breed of pirates are chicken ****s and dont like to venture into 0.5 sec systems so they prey on the newbs of this game making it less and less fun to even try to play at the beggining and I think there is enough problems there without adding a new one of pirates in starter area's that noone can do anything about cause they only attack the weak new players.
As a side note i would like you to know that i do not hate that this game has pirates at all. I find it adds a whole new feel to the mmorpg genre that people can actually choose to be evil and im not just talking that annoying evil like horde vs alliance in WOW but to be truely evil and be able to kill anyone you feel like it. HOWEVER there was a reason that there is high sec and low sec systems. it is very annoying that it is safer to be in a 0.5sec system to mine than it is to be in a 1.0sec system because of this new breed of pirate.

i suggest a corp or a few buddies to gang. they get kill rights as well when you are can flipped. cloaks and blaster thoraxes for the win here my friend. In game mechanics can let you loot there wrecks which might be more profitable than mining anyway.

Edited by: Kitoba on 15/05/2008 20:45:37 IMHO, you shouldn't mine before you can fly a cruiser, at least. It's just not attractive from an isk/h pov. Just do the numbers.
Btw: how do you manage to get successfully can-flipped, anyway? It can't happen while you're filling up if you're paying attention, you should be easily warping away fast after collecting your stuff, and not idiotic enough to get your stuff while already locked by a tackler.

Then get some cargo expanders and make every ore thief wince. It's not like a retriever would have a significantly undersized cargo hold.
Sadly, it does not seem to be "adapt or die", but "adapt or whine".

im using tech 2 cargo expanders and i fill my hold every single cycle my hauler has tech 2 cargo expanders and giant secure containers however i am filling a jet can every 25 min and have to go back to base every time i want to get my hauler if i do what you are suggesting i will be warping to and from the belts and stations every singe cycle and the retriever cannot warp very far per full cap
all im saying is that STEALING should lower security standings aswell or else the aggro timer should be alot longer or the person should get kill rights or something i mean atm it really is possible to steal from people with no concinquences

Xarutor, EVE is a game for people who use their brains. There are many ways you can beat the can-flippers. Since you seem to be good at baiting the flippers (45 in a month! wow!) why don't you get a corp-mate in a cloaked Curse to hang out with you on these mining ops? There are half a dozen other good strategies.
EVE is a battle of wits. If you aren't willing to use yours, then you deserve to lose the battle.

I do agree with you (the poster), can flippers are lame ass guys and usally noobs too.
That been said;
I can underline that this is a problem, i spent the better part of a week scanning belts around jita, looking for those that you hate, the pirates and from the likes of it, it seems that jet can mining is growing less popular in high sec. Not uncommon that I was the only one (but i wasn't realy..later) jet caning and that seemed odd at first.
To be effektive the bait must look like a fish, a small and harmless one, an easy pray. A condor can't cause you much pain can it?
Tell that to the iteron... and bestower.. and badger ...and...
Anyway there is alternativs, the simplest one, quit jet caning. But you have allready proven that you can think, moving away from that easy picking in high sec. If you like mining free from rats the you could try some low pop high sec cause flippers tend to keep to the large packs, get away from those and you are rather safe.
Anyway the tip about joining a corp isn't a bad one for two reasons; 1. You might have some corp budies that can help you 2. You tend to think twice about stealing from a corp flagged can because of the above given reason.
Last but not least, if you are that good of a bait i wouldn't mind helping you out a bit Mail me ingame if you'd like.

Retrievers are not Hulks Kitoba, you cannot AFK them for 10 minutes filling them up. Even with expanders they'll fill up in 2 cycles with poor skills, with good skills (as I suspect this guy has), you quickly reach a point where you can fill up enough of the hold in one cycle that its not even worth it to start another if you aren't can mining 2000m3 (3251m3 expanded) does not go very far on a barge, a Retriever with Barge IV will pull in 2200 m3 per cycle, that'll overflow the base cargo in a single cycle. Certainly you could cargo rig them, but that should strike you as a ludicrous waste of ISK. -------------------- ICE Blueprint Sales FIRST!! -Yipsilanti Pfft. You can't fly a Cruiser, but you went straight into professional Miner... interesting choice. And you have a hauler, but evidently no way of running them both at once (ie. another paid account, which is the only way Eve supports "alts")
What you fail to realize is that Eve is an MMO. That's Massive multiplayer online game. I use the word "game" loosely, due to the fact Eve is rapidly evolved from a fair and fun "game" and become a study in sociopathic tendencies of a society in space. But the point is, there are other players for a reason. Though you may not want to join a Corp, there are advantages. I understand not everyone wants to join a corp under the premise they know how to mine. Then most corps want to lock you into being a miner for the rest of your days. Now you're paying $15 a month do collect rock for them. But you can still make friends, and possibly a few of them like to mine now and again as well. Form a group, head out to a relatively deserted system, and mine away. Find a remote system, where you aren't competing with other miners for the same asteroids. 0.7 and below are great for anchored cans and also have better ores like Omber and Kernite. Even if you insist on staying 0.8 and above, you can make a killing off Veld and Trit.
Rambling... *gets back on topic* You can attempt to solo mine all you want. But you will be, by definition, on your own. If someone happens upon your Jet Can, then it's theirs to take. Jet Cans are the Eve version of a cardboard box on the side of the road. They weren't meant to be an ore storage device, but rather a way to discard useless loot to the wayside. Besides, CCP has made it clear that anything done within the limits of the game, and anything that could conceivably happen in real life, is fair enough in their book. Make some friends, travel in a group, and train something besides rock chewing.

I think the majority of you missed the point here, by a long way, jaded as you are! ;)
If the OP is a genuine noob, what we're getting here is valuable feedback from a brand new player: a fresh perspective.
It's important that EVE continues to attract more players so that I have more people to shoot, so don't scare this guy (and others like him) off with glib responses and intolerance. He may one day wander into my 0.0 gate-camp, rat at an asteroid belt, or appear as an opponent in an enemy fleet.
You jaded people have to consider that in order for EVE to continue to attract more targets, the start-game period does need to ease players into "the game". At the moment new players are grabbed by shirt-front, given a liverpool-kiss, thrown on their ar$e, ur1inated on and told to "get a clue".
Starting EVE is more like a hazing ritual than an alluring experience. Throw your support behind an easier game start period today and ensure we have plenty of targets tomorrow!
Huzzah! --- Not happy with something in EVE? An emo whine will doubtless help your cause. |

It is in the newbies best interest to join a player corp early. They then learn how to play the game much faster and have a lower burnout rate.

Eve has definitely developed a Five Monkeys feel to it.
Pirates gank rookies in high sec, either by Can Flipping, or Bait Cans, or any other means they can dream up. And everyone accepts that as fact because... it's always been that way.
That's why I said this "game" isn't fun anymore. It's challenging, it can be rewarding... but you can't say that both sides shake hands before and after. You can't even say there are only two sides, because everyone is out for themselves. CYA has taken a firm hold of everyone, by which I mean Cover Your Ass(ets). If anyone wants to start making changes to how Rookies are welcomed into the fray, it does need to start in High Sec. But just take a few minutes to read through these forums, about the various methods suggested to secure High Sec to try and provide some relief for its denizens. For every victim who might suggest a method, there are 20 flamers telling them to suck it up and deal. Most flamers are only concerned with avoiding something that impedes their merriment, but the message rings clear. Eve is not meant to be a safe place. From the moment you press that little Undock button, you are in someone's crosshairs.
I agree wholeheartedly there is too much going for the Pirates. Eve is breeding new generations of Sociopaths every day. Kill or be killed leads rookies to train for combat, until the fateful day they ruin another rookie by returning the favor they got so long ago. But it would take an entire overhaul to make Eve a "game" again. And there will be chaos in the streets before the serial killers allow that to happen.
Call me a Care Bear, I don't care. I grow more callous every day I play. And all I can say for the Can Flippers in particular, is keep an eye out for my Jet Cans. There just might be a Stealth close by.

Xarutor, the reason we attack miners in 0.8-1.0 systems is that that's where all the miners are. There are very few targets in lower security systems, so why bother going there?
You claim can flipping is more profitable than mining. That's simply untrue. I've been doing it since I started playing, and let me tell you, the money isn't great. That's not the reason we do it. To be honest, I do it because when I do get a bite, it's fun watching the miner squirm, and the hatemail can be quite amusing.
If you want to be safe from can flippers the surefire way to do that is to not use a can. Secure cans are not secure in 0.8-1.0 precisely to encourage the slightly older miners who actually have the skills to anchor a sec can to move away from noobspace. Leave noobspace to the bantams, they hardly ever get flipped anyway, because there's absolutely no chance it'll be profitable. Although, it's highly amusing to flip a full can they've obviously spent a whole day filling with their Miner I, and then blowing them up with a badger.....
So, for total safety from flippers, use an anchored can, or just use your cargohold. For almost total safety, get a friend in a hauler to immediately haul away your ore. If you're mining to a can and leaving it unattended while you go and get your hauler, what do you expect will happen? Would you leave your shopping bags sitting on the pavement while you went and got your car to pick them up? Even right outside a police station, they're going to get nicked, and nobody would give a crap.
Anyway, you've said yourself that moving away to less heavy traffic systems has made it easier for you to mine. Sounds to me like the system is working exactly as it should.

To the OP: I understand your frustration. I understand how unfair EVE can seem. However, realize you are complaining about a mechanic that has been in the game since day one.
Keep in mind that the "can" into which you are mining is a jettison container. By the very definition, its purpose is to hold material you do not wish to keep.
Honestly, the change I feel necessary in order to fix this situation would be to remove the jet can mechanic altogether. I really don't understand why it was necessary to begin with, and I don't understand why jet cans have such huge capacity.
In any case, I mine regularly on my alt, and have only been can-flipped once. It's amazing what having a hauler and/or combat character can accomplish. Not once have I seen anyone even approach my can when it is obviously guarded.
Also, try to move to less populated systems. There will be less competition for the asteroids, less people to bother you by flipping your can, and less lag, which all come together to mean less frustration!

Slightly off-topic, but: Problem is, we miners don't really get any bigger or better ships. Sure, a hulk is better than a retriever - but the same problems remain. Not enough cargo, slow, no tank.
@OP: Don't get this wrong, but: You decide to be a miner. Get used to being screwed. If you enjoy doing so, great. If it's just money - do missions primary and mining only as hobby.

Well, it could be me. But the Hulk sitting in my hanger can carry 21,500 m3 of ore. So "not enough cargo" is not entirely accurate. Slow... sure. So is everything else that size. But you could always slap an AB/MWD on if necessary. However, when you can mine half a field at a time, who needs to go fast. And as for tank... there are several variants of permatanked Hulks on Battleclinic. If you doubt the effectiveness of a Hulk vs Pirates, then check this out.

You may be. Consider that if you intend on making a career out of mining, then join a Corp with similar interests. Or at the very least, make some friends who want to work together. It's really not hard to find a trustworthy group that can mine together, provide combat overwatch, and market the collected ore reasonably. My friends and I take several hours, mining field after field dry, and share the profits. No one gets flipped, no one loses their ship, and some might even call it "socializing" to some degree.

I checked, doublechecked and triplechecked the date of your post. It kept saying 2008 though. The restriction on cans not allowed in .8 and higher and the flagging mechanic on can stealing are both more than 2 years old. Pirates that are doing this have been doing this for more than 2 years. So it's hardly a new breed.
The only thing that changed recently is that existing cans in 0.8 and higher system were finally removed. For you as a new player that had no effect at all, unless you joined a corp and had access to their old cans.
Because this change is ancient history, tons of way to deal with it are already known and applied. Some of the more funnier include fitting a hulk for combat.
Lastly, there's no difference for a pirate to canflip in 1.0 or 0.5. Being a chicken doesn't come into that. It's just that higher sec asteroid belts spawn weaker to no rats and thus are preferred by miners. Any smart pirate hunts where he is most likely to catch his prey and earn his income.
Basically, you've posted a whole block of text with the majority of it based on misunderstandings and incomplete knowledge.

As far as I'm aware you've never been able to anchor in .8 and above, at least not as long as I've been around.
