I just adore Terry Pratchett, and I have never read anything that makes me concider favouring other writers above him. Although Robin Hobb good as well but her most famous sago just...ended And I trust Miso's judgement
I think Joshua is working or something, bit dissapointed he wont hijack his own topic

What did Banks and or Prichete(sp) write? I admit I'm not a huge Sci-Fi fan but but I don't think I've ever heard of them.

I think Miso doesn't have the patience needed for Iain M. Banks.
Banks, Pratchett and a couple of other writers hog my bookshelves. Thorougly reccomend both as well as more names (there was a big book thread a few months ago).

Wow, thats not at all patronising is it?
Banks is ok. Earlier stuff was enjoyable, later stuff is dull. Feersum was basically Banks saying "I've read Flowers For Algernon". His non-sci-fi stuff seems to be groping to recreate Lanark, but its not quite good enough. Just an opinion.
Pratchett writes the same book over and over again, just does FIND and REPLACE in his Word document manuscript for the char names, and gives the book a new title. *yawns*
Feel free to flame away...

No I can't say that I have but I'll google it. I am a big fan of the cyberpunk style sci-fi ie William gibson, Bruce Sterling etc. Is it anything like that?

Nah... "Discworld" is more like "Hitchhikers Guide..." in a fantasy setting.
But i love Gibson, too. Neuromancer is one of my favorite books of all times.

Funnily enough I'm with Miso on Terry Prachett, I found the first couple of books quite funny but to be honest, there is just so much riotous comedy fantasy histrionics one can read before going ho-humm.
"Feersum" is nothing whatsoever to do with the subject matter of Flowers for Algernon by the way. (apart from in the most surface textual composition first glance analyis). Thats like saying all books where the character suffers flashbacks are the same ;)
I found it hard to read, but with good ideas trying to get out.
But for quality Banks science fiction I would really start with "against a dark background" Maud ... I love that book.

1. Josh, did you even get your first paycheck, or will they be billing you for the tailor-fit uniform?
2. Admit it, you people havent read a book since your deep eve addiction set in.

You have a point there First when I started EVE I tried out mining and due to my low skills and crappy lasers it took me a long time to wait for the ore to get to my hold so I used to read a bit while I was playing. I also did agent missions and didn¦t have a afterburner fitted so I could again read a bit while traveling. During this ca 3 month period I read the Dark Elf trilogy and 2 books in the Icewind Dale trilogy. I then lost internet and computer for 2 months and in that time I finished Icewind dale trilogy and added to it 8 other books about the same characters plus the Reality Dysfunction (which is kind of long). Schoolwork went straight to hell though.
That is I don¦t stop reading but it is drastically reduced when I have access to EVE __________ Capacitor research |

Miso, I think I forgot the tongue-in-cheek emote there. Sorry about that.
As for Pratchett, his books are social commentary, pointing out idiocy in modern society by making the events happen in a fantasy (not a sci-fi) world. Each book grapples some idiotic aspect of the human race and hits it with a hammer for us all to see it.
Tom Holts works are somewhat not far from Pratchett, however his historical novels are the apex of his work (The Walled Orchard, Olympiad, Alexdaner).

LOL I am not humorless.
I also prefer fantasy over sci-fi but I prefer good examples of either genre as opposed to bad fantasy.

I've been so busy today.
Hardly any time left to browse online after making 3 grown men cry and getting away with extra tomato on my Greggs' sarnie.
Iain M Banks is great, Terry Pratchett sucks, and please don't hijack threads without me in future, k?
Oh, and yeah, you'll find my employment history smacks strongly of Iain M Banks influence.

"the sky above the port was the color of television tuned to a dead channel." i knew as soon as i read that right from the start i was in for it
i also greatly enjoyed walter jon williams Hardwired, and it's cure lil corporate-manipulation-via-rumour-and-missiles theme, which come to think of it should be rather Eveish.. his ******e is an amazon, the Cowboy the only dude taller than she , i wondered about this obsession with height until one day, the following verbatim convo took place:
me talking to random man behind "info" table at signing: excuse me, do you know where Walter Jon Williams is supposed to be?
7'+ tall giant behind table: no, and i wish i did, 'cause i'm him...
