What ever happened to this? Did invention take its place?
I think the skills are still in the database although I haven't checked prior to writing this,
I kinda liked the idea of taking an item to take it apart and finding out how it worked, resulting in a BPC or not, depending on success.

I think invention is a more practical method and has hence replaced the older idea of reverse engineering. I do however think it would be nice to do SOME sort of reverse engineering. Perhaps not necessarily for tech 2 bpc's or anything, but instead a method of creating higher meta level items. I figure pirates and factions have to have some way of making these tweaked objects.
Perhaps reverse engineering could be a method of deconstructing faction modules, and recieving some 'module salvage' or something. Then using these salvaged items to tweak on existing tech 1 modules. Say you can salvage parts from 3 or 4 meta 2 items to get enough to make a meta 4 item or soemthing like this. Not sure on the balance aspect of it, but it seems like a neat idea...
Of course, I'd like to be able to make alliance branded modules. Use the salvage to create meta level items branded with your alliance name.

If I worked for CCP and they said "Figure out some use for the Reverse Engineering skill!" I might consider using it to create T2 BPO's. It would be a process similar to invention, but you use a T2 BPC, a reverse engineering tool, and some more datacores. Maybe a few R.Db's as well. You then have a chance of creating a T2 BPO out of the T2 BPC.
Though honestly, the last thing the T2 market needs right now is more supply.
I do like the idea of being able to use it to reverse engineer faction modules and make faction BPC's, too.

Reverse Engineering was the name for the 'concept' that ended up turning into invention.
