EVE is not real life. That much everybody can agree on.
What the problem seems to be is that a lot of people believe EVE should be fairer, more honest or somesuch other idealistic principles embodied in the game, when compared to real life.
HELL NO !
EVE was, is, and should be harsher, even less fair and much more dishonourable than real life. That's the main trait of this game, and those who wish it to swing the opposite way should go play WoW.
There, I've said it.

Edited by: Jinx Barker on 16/05/2008 17:39:16 I actually had a discussion this morning with someone on forums, who felt that EVE should be "fair."
EVE is not fair, and by fair, I mean equal. It is extremley egalitarian game, but just like in real life complete equality is not possible, and if it is, then it will become Hello Kitty Online, where we all will be holding hands and singing Kum Ba Yah and shortly after quitting the game.
I completely agree that EVE should be harsh, dark, and should have people who have things and those who have not. It should have the seething underbelly of "lower class" who struggle to rise to the top at the expense of others, but with the help of their friends, corporations, and alliances.
At the same time, it should not be a free-for-all zerg-fest with absolutely no security for anyone. Which is why it is priceless the way CCP struck a balance between Empire, Low Sec Empire, and 0.0 space.
Although Low Sec Empire needs improvement, and I do not think that FW will be the answer. But that is a topic for much different conversation.

Precisely my point. I'm getting sick and tired of half the forums full of "not fair" or "this wouldn't be occuring in real life" type of posts

I think EVE is as fair right now as it should be, although it does protect people a -little- bit. Anytime I've suffered any significant loss, it was because of my own arrogance, naivety, or downright stupidity.
Thats how EVE should be. Fair for all to be as heartless and cutthroat as they want to be; and they should be free to scam and lie and cheat and murder and steal and kill as they can get away with.
Fair for all the honourable pilots, to have their own code of ethics or that of the Alliance or Corporation they choose to join.
EVE shouldn't be downright unfair; but its players should have the option to be unfair to their fellow players.
tl'dr version; They're internet spaceships. Its good as it is, please do not change the sandbox freedom we have.
Do the right thing. Don't leave shuttles in space. |

Why does it have to be at each extreme? Why theis 'black and white' approach.
Eve is a universe, shades of grey are fine.

To make eve even MORE FAIR I say we need to take all the ISK from every current player, divide the amount by the number of players, and give that amount back to each player.

Some of the meta**** is annoying (noob alts in npc corps used to scout in highsec, BACON and the fact that anybody sucks so bad at a game that they have to write a program like that to play part of it for them, that sort of thing I consider metegaming), but what can you do about it... as a player, nothing at all, so you live with it and you shoot at what presents itself as a target, right?
Everything else is working as intended and I agree that the balance is pretty damn fair as it is.

The point is SOME people (more and more each passing day, actually) are NOT too stupid to read (and write for that matter)... but they ARE either too stupid or too ignorant to even try and realize what's said in the OP.

Day 30: Patch released Day 31: Everyone's wallet now stands at 1mil ISK. Day 32: Price of everything crashes.

What's so condescending about stating a fact ?
Oh, well... unless you disagree with the statements in the OP, then I can see why it might seem condescending. But then again, this means you're one of the reasons I HAD to make the post in the first place. Right ?

I like Akita T's condescending posts. Normally, you see Akita posting well-reasoned, very intelligent posts with numerous facts and other neat stuff supporting the well-reasoned intelligence of the posts. It's good to see a poster like that make a "HELL NO!!!" post once in a while.
Makes me feel like less of a plebe.

'fair' and 'unfair' are really meaningless in a game like this.
What matters in the end is whether the net effect of the game mechanic is 'enjoyment generating' or 'enjoyment destroying'.

Eve online reflects the harshness that we sometimes find in real life.
For those of you that feel eve is unfair take a step back and try to analyse situations in more depth,
- if ur mining in lo-sec and someone comes in local and u think they may be hostile, then just dock or log off
- if your hauling expensive stuff use a scout, use a cloak, split your loads and travel after downtime, dont be silly and use autopilot.
- If your in a pvp situation where you know the other person will win, get out of there, logoff, or dock, or cloak,
Generally what im saying is try to do in eve what you would in real life, you wouldnt walk into certain bars or clubs if you knew you would get beaten up by 12 big men would you. Just take some time and analyse eve in more depth and you will see that it is in fact fair.

While I see what you're saying and don't disagree with the overall sentiment, I must point out the flaws here...
If you're IN a pvp situation (meaning, you're already engaged in combat) where you know the other person(s) will win, logging off does not save your ship. Docking will require you to be within 2500m of the station and to deagrress for 30 seconds (same if you're at a stargate and wish to jump out of the system) abd you cannot cloak while something has you targeted.
If you jump into a gate camp, yeah, you can immediately cloak or you can log off before you ever come out of the 30 second gate cloak, or you can try to burn back to the gate to get out of there... but if you're actually IN combat, it's not quite as simple. You need to keep a clear head and think.
