Many of the ship model changes are often previewed with NPCs.
For example, the Crusaders and the Maledictions all use Executioner hulls with additional fins. Before these ships ever came into being, low level Blood NPCs were already using this model, much akin to the Crusader, while Amarr Navy Sergeants---ships that guard the gates in the Amarr region---use the same design and the Malediction skin.
Check another low level NPC, the Serpentis Patroller, which looks like a Taranis.
Even the NPCs currently in the game are preshadowing the new ships.
* Serpentis Soldiers and Protectors have been featuring a modded Tristan hull with large underarm spikes.
* Serpentis Sentinels feature a modded Incursus hull with larger appendages used for gun hardpoints.
* Anyone doing missions for the Amarr Empire will have encountered the Khanid Fighter, a nasty looking Punisher bristling with weapons, appendages, revolving devices and fins. This baby shoots some kind of medium class weapon---a heavy pulse in my view---and fires missiles too.
* The same missions with the Khanid Fighter will also reveal another Khanid ship, the slaver boss for the mission. The ship is a black and neon blue Arbitrator, who like the NPC Blood Arch Engraver, can shoot two missiles at one time---implying that these Arbitrators have at least two missile launchers instead of one.
* Another mission, basically a low level kidnapping one, reveals the bad guy to be in a Griffin. But this nasty little Griffin has some model changes---two large launchers at its top.
* Patrolling the gates of the Amarr Empire are a variety of cool looking NPC Navy ships.
--- The Sarum Navy Sergeant. This has got to be one of the coolest looking frigates in the gate. This is based on a Inquisitor hull that is thickened in the back, deeply colored in red and sports launchers along the side of the hull. it actually replaced a previous supped up Inquistor model that CCP may have ultimately rejcted. This previous model has stubby wings and is deep blue in color.
--- The Sarum Navy Colonel. A deep blue Arbitrator with two launchers on top of the hull and two more underneath.
--- Amarr, Ammatar, Khanid Navy Colonels. Different colored Arbitrators. The Amarr and Ammatar ones are nearly black with gold, while the Khanid ones are black with neon blue.
--- Amarr, Sarum, Ammatar and Khanid Sergeant Majors. Multicolored Omens. The Khanid ships aer black with neon blue, while the Amarr and Ammatar ones are dark in color. The Sarum ones feature a silver blue color.
