I so fancy a massive Doner Kebab covered in hot sauce and onions with those little green pickled chillys.
Or should I have a curry instead?

isn't there a kebab shop in England somewhere, that has a violent crime rate ten thousand times higher than anywhere else in the UK? As in stabbings, beatings and other such crimes occur every week?

I would be prepared to give Horse Burgers a go and also most other foods.
Never knock food until you try it, although I will make an exception for that preserved/rotton shark stuff the chaps from Iceland like
The smell of that reminded me of my toe jam after two weeks hiking in the tropics with no washing.

Shish is my favourite, close second is a Kofta Kebab. Fresh tomatoes, cucumber, shredded cabbage, no sos though. Mmm...
I would not touch a Doner though, you don't know where they source it or what's in it. Round here they offer the Doner Calzone, deep fried Mars Bars and deep fried Pizza. Heart clogging stuff i tell ya.

Indeed.
Chicken, maybe lamb, either way time you've dossed it with tom/chillo sauce, combo on the alcoholic state of under the influence you must be under in the first place to walk into a kebab house in the first place... noticing the difference would be imposable anyway
Seriously though, don't get me wrong, before the new me started rolling out early last year.. post club was pretty much allways donner laid with tomato sauce... if they didn't have steak.... now the only vice is chineese once a week...(totaly all within my weighwatcher points, after the beer:) the killer kabab should seal the deal for anyone realy... along with total boycots on pizza's and mc'dons... if you guys only knew
Healthy living, it's great

We don't really have kebab hear in western canukistan, though we do have donair (doner) served in a pita with sauce and salad all stuffed in there. Doesnt surprise me at all about the grease content, also after getting food poisoning from one, theyre pretty much off limits for me.
Get a slice or 4 of pizza instead.

I am the proud inventor of the Kebab Pizza, where I couldn't decide which to have so bought a pizza and emptied a large donner with a ton of chilli sauce on top of it. Marvellous!

Edited by: Haakon Jarl on 20/05/2008 14:14:49 I don't eat Kebabs any more. I once had a friend whos father ran a kebab joint, I got to learn a lot of things. I would never eat a kebab again unless I know its proper meat they are serving.
That being said, it tastes friggn great.

Ok, I'm from The States. What the heck is a "Doner"?
I'm familiar with Beef and Chicken Kabobs, but I have no idea what "Doner" is.
I'm rather afraid to Google it since it might set off the "naughty stuff" filter here at work. ;)

Preparation of meat for d÷ner kebabs D÷ner kebab sandwich served in a thick pita (Turkish: pide). D÷ner kebab sandwich served in a thick pita (Turkish: pide).
The meat used for making d÷ner kebabs may be lamb, beef, veal or chicken, but rarely pork. After the Mad cow disease (BSE) crisis, even fish was used in some[specify] countries.[citation needed] Generally a d÷ner kebab sandwich is served with a salad made from shredded lettuce, tomatoes and onions. Usually there is a choice between a hot sauce, a yoghurt sauce containing garlic (tzatziki) and a yoghurt sauce containing herbs. Most of the kebab vendors in Europe also have French fries which can be served as a side or wrapped with the meat and salad. Some times more varied ingredients are available, such as hummous (chick pea paste), tahini (sesame sauce) or sheep milk cheese (Turkish: beyaz peynir, or "white cheese").
There are two basic ways of preparing meat for d÷ner kebabs:
* The most common and authentic method is to stack seasoned slices of lean meat onto a vertical skewer in the shape of a cylinder. The stack is cooked by radiant heat from electric elements or gas fired infrared burners. Often meat, tomatoes, and onions are placed at the top of the stack to drip juices over the meat keeping it moist. * Some cheaper shops serve a combination of seasoned sliced and ground meat cooked on a grilltop as d÷ner kebab. In Germany the amount of ground meat is not allowed to surpass 60% (Berliner Verkehrsauffassung).

Sounds pretty darn good. Except for the yogurt bit. Yogurt in the States is either unflavored and gross, or sweetened with fruit. Not appropriate for a sandwich.
Although it sounds like it would be really hard to cook on a grill. I suspect you need a specialized vertical infrared cooker to do the job.
Actually, a "Doner" sounds alot like several different kinds of sandwiches here in America. we have the "Steak Sandwich" (Hot thin-sliced steak with cheese and cooked peppers and onions) the "Submarine" and various other sandwiches which revolve around the "hot or cold meat and other stuff on a roll or bun" theme.
Although, in almost all cases, the meat is never skewered and heated. Usually it is either grilled, fried, microwaved, or simply served cold. Interesting to cook it vertically like that though.
Personally, as a resident of the greater Buffalo NY area, I prefer the humble Chicken Wing as my food of choice. Trust me, you haven't LIVED until you've had REAL Buffalo-Style Chicken Wings. (Just a note, in that Wikipedia article, it lists 4 different possible origins for Wings. As a longtime Buffalo area resident, I can tell you that only the FIRST origin is accepted around here. The others are either rumors or hearsay.)
Dang it, now I'm HUNGRY!

We here in england do know what a "sub" sammich is.... Subway seem to have more branches over this side of the pond than McDonalds and Burger King combined these days!
As for Doner kebabs... I used to eat tyhem regularly after a night out on the beer (the ole "elephant's leg" looks so much more appetizing through beer goggles) - I mainly stick to chicken these days though as our local kebab shop barbecues that right in front of you where the doner meat comes from a bain marie full of grease.
To the poster claiming to have invented kebab pizzas: the same shop has done "doner calzone" pizzas for years and most places I've been will throw doner and chilli sauce on a pizza if you ask.
