As title how many labs can you fit on a large pos. With still leaving enough power for protection ?

Hard to say. People have different philosophies as to what constitutes "protection." Furthermore, what type of large POS are you talking about? It best you play with the spreadsheet in the stickies and see for yourself.

Depends on tower faction. But around 12. Its simply a CPU issue. And guns uses PG. Abstraction and Transcendence: Nature, Shintai, and Geometry |

Forgive the noob question, but does a high-sec pos need protection? I thought concord protected them if they're attacked, or has this been changed recently?

If you get war dec'ced you wish you had them, Concord will not help.

I understand that installing a few shield hardeners can make your towers far more resistant to attack. From what I gather, it's even more effective than guns, that is, breaking the shield on hardened POSes in high sec is the apex of tedium in Eve. OTOH, a few guns might discourage the less clued from disrupting your business.

9 standard labs + 5 advanced labs is good all around lab setup for large caldary.
When getting some smallish merc corp on you offline 2 regular labs for hardeners, warp scrams and other defence modules. When getting serious merc corp on your head then offline and drag em to station and online full grid of defences. 'Serious' being then 5 hardeners + full grid of weaponry, in case of caldary mix of small guns + missile launchers and ECM batteries (plus warp jammers ofc) as you will need to online new guns for 'after-reinforced' battle anyway.
With reasonable amount of POS gunners (approx 3 of em is optimal) you can make sure that anybody who will remove that tower from space will pay the butchers bill for the luxury. That is in hi sec then. If anybody wants to kill it enough then it will be killed, all the defender can do is to make sure the attacker litters the space with corpses. When using POS gunners do not forget to pod the attackers, as some less experienced ones sometimes do not know that manned pos guns pod also and sit around in their egg.
