The first computers (that could perform calculations) where abacuses. That'd be China. Computers have progressed gradually since then, where do you draw the line at a "real" computer?
Quote: made by an AMERICAN company.
Nope, -mostly- made in China/Korea/Japan. Most electronic components are.
Intel. American. AMD. American. Kingston (RAM) American.
DELL. AMERICAN. HP. American. Apple. American. I could go on but no need.
I am not saying no one else has contributed anything or does contribute. I am merely arguing the point that was stated earlier. Some idiot earlier wrote that AMERICANS ARE STUPID.
Why would anyone say a blanket generalization like that? Saying something like that is stupid. but then people started agreeing with said idiot. Who is more stupid, the fool or the fool who follows him? Giddy up!

The President can do one thing and only one thing, and that's appoint Supreme Court Judges when one retires (ie jack ****). Yes he "can" do more than that, but it can all be overridden by the Senate or House in one way or another.
What!?
Oh yeah...the President of the US is a toothless figurehead.
Good grief...you have GOT to be kidding!
Yes, congress can override the President. The judiciary can override congress or the President. It's called the balance of power and is fundamental to the US government so no one group can control it all.
But that does not mean each branch is powerless because others can override it. The President is Commander-in-Chief of the military for one thing. He tells the army to go somewhere they go. Period.
He also has the power to veto bills. Yes they can be overcome but that is difficult most times.
He can also issue Executive Orders which are binding on federal agencies and need no approval from anyone.
Only he can negotiate treaties.
He can appoint judges and ambassadors.
He has the Bully Pulpit which is no small thing.
The President most certainly does wield real power.

Maybe the idiot who misquotes.
I said your average American is dumb. I would not list Michael Dell or Steve Jobs as average.

The basis for the modern computer was done by Alan Turing (a Brit), expanding on work done by Kurt G÷del (an Austrian), and later refined by John Von Neumann (a Hungarian).

No, he was quite right. The powers of the US President, as laid in the constitution, are quite limited. Collectively, congress has far more power. If they felt like it, congress could strip the executive branch down to the President, the Vice President, and a few cabinet positions surrounding diplomacy and the military. What power the President does have is mostly in foreign policy, and even that has limits (treaties need to be ratified by congress, for instance). Almost anything of domestic importance happens in congress or the courts.
Which makes complete sense, considering that the US constitution was based on the idea that no one person should have too much power.

No, he is not right. The power of the Presidency is more subtle and more powerful than overt abilities.
He has the power of the veto which is huge most times. Want to get a bill of yours made into law? You'd better wheel-and-deal with the President (owe him one down the road).
Want to become an Ambassador? A Federal judge? A Supreme Court judge? Hope you have sucked up to the President...you owe him a lot of favors not to mention he can be sure people who thinks like he does are in those positions. And while the Senate needs to approve judges there are ways around that (appoint the judge while Senate is out of session).
He appoints the head of all the agencies. Yes the Senate can override that but they need a good reason generally. President almost always gets his way on those. These are the people charged with carrying out the daily operations of the government. Combine people beholden to the President and Executive Orders and voila...most of the government does what you tell it to.
That is a lot of people who owe their status to one man. You do not think he makes use of that?
Then you have the power of the Bully Pulpit (term coined by Teddy Roosevelt). Its power cannot be under estimated when in capable hands.
And not least he is the Commander-in-Chief. If the President told the US military to go invade Canada tomorrow they are obliged to do so. Short of Congress impeaching and convicting the President and hoping his replacement stops them there is nothing they can do.

What has any company from where ever you are from contributed to the world?
The telephone invented by Alexander Graham Bell (scottish), without which (or rather without the technology it uses) the internet could never exist.
The Television, invented by John Logie Baird (Scottish) the technology that sprang from this gave us PC monitors and of course 50" widescreen TV's.
The World Wide Web, invented by Tim Berners-Lee (English) gave us the means to post useless rubbish on forums just like these.
Penicilin invented by Sir Alexander Flemming (Scottish) without which millions of people across the world would never have been born or survived any major illness.
Steel mass production invented by Sir Henry Bessemer (English) without which none of your shiny shiny American skyscrapers could have been built.
The Seismometer invented by James Forbes (Scottish) without which hundreds of thousands of people all over the world would have died due to lack of atleast some warning of impending earthquakes.
The Incadesant Lightbulb invented by Humphry Davy (English) although there is some evidence that the Egyptians invented something similar. Without which we would all still be using gas lights.
The Nuclear Reactor invented by Leo Szilard (Hungarian). Maybe not the best invention of all time but extremely useful nonetheless, without which none of your big fancy American Carriers/Submarines would be worth a damn.
So, just a few of the worlds more important inventions, all invented if not perfected by people NOT FROM AMERICA.
P.S Im not anti-American in case you were wondering, I happen to think the USA is a great country and Americans have been responsible for atleast some of the most important inventions of all time, but not all of them. Infact, not that many original ideas have come from your country, but then it is a very young country by world standards. Oh, and im English btw.
EDIT: Just wanted to say that I don't think that ALL Americans are stupid by any means. Stupidity isn't restricted to one country, there are millions of stupid people all over the world. Fight the stupidity I say, down with all the stupid people!!

So the President instructs the Department of the Interior to do something. They don't. The President fires the head of the Department of the Interior and appoints someone who will do what he says. That pretty much places the power, as a practical matter, in the President's hands.
Quote: Congress can simply refuse the fund the effort. The Power of the Purse is a powerful one.
Yeah, that's the theory. Does not work like that in practice. When Joe Voter's kid is on the front lines and Congress revokes funding so he has no bullets or food Joe Voter will see their congress critters out on their ass in no time. No politician will go there. It's political suicide.
Besides that under the War Powers Resolution the President can send the military anywhere but presumably must get congressional approval to keep them wherever within 90 days. Thing is that is probably unconstitutional and every President knows it. Once the troops are there the US is committed.

As a Scandinavian I would like to throw in a nother 2 cents on this subject. After observing many internet forums I have found especially people from the UK to be overly critical of the US. I think thats just because they dont have an empire anymore, and in reality they are Americas lapdog and they know it.
The UK should learn from France, who were a bit more clever than the UK 5 years ago.

The Munich agreement, signed by Germany, France, Britain, and Italy permitted German annexation of Czechoslovakia's Sudetenland.
Chamberlain was the prime minister for the UK from 1937 -1940 who was succeeded by Winston Churchill.
****** and Al Qaida are 2 different worlds. Thanks to mass media most people fail to see that.
