meh...not much of a smack down.
A little history less for you:
-Chamberlain flew to Munich to negotiate the agreement, and received an ecstatic reception upon his return to Britain on 30 September 1938. At Heston Aerodrome, west of London, he made the now famous "Peace for our time" speech and waved the agreement to a delighted crowd. When ***** invaded and seized the rest of Czechoslovakia in March 1939...
-nice negotiation
-He did, however, abort the proposal of von Kleist and Wilhelm Canaris before the invasion to Austria to assassinate *****, deciding instead to play on the edge of the situation: to maintain a strong anti-communist power in Central Europe, with the ****s, accepting some 'reward' on 'lebensraum' and still 'manage' with *****. Chamberlain, who was nicknamed "Monsieur J'aime Berlin" (French for Mr I love Berlin) just before the outbreak of hostilities, remained hopeful up until Germany's invasion of the Low Countries that a peace treaty to avert a general war
On 1 September 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Many in the United Kingdom expected war, but the government did not wish to make a formal declaration unless it had the support of France. France's intentions were unclear at that point, and the government could only give Germany an ultimatum: if ****** withdrew his troops within two days, Britain would help to open talks between Germany and Poland
words of Oliver Cromwell to the Long Parliament: ô You have sat too long here for any good you have been doing. Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go. ö

Amen.
Unfortunately if they do that to people who matter their career is over because no other people who matter will agree to be on the show. Sucks but that is the way of it.
And hell...I could have answered that question (although I might be semi-rare for an American who actually remembers his history lessons).

I am no fan of Chamberlain but to be fair Great Britain was in no position to wage war when he-who-shall-not-be-named-on-this-board was getting in full swing. Only France had an army sufficient to take on Germany size wise but frankly their army was pretty out of date equipment wise. None of them felt comfortably in a position to tackle Germany.
FWIW Churchill had been telling anyone who would listen to take Germany seriously and beef up the British military but no one was listening before it was too late.

Well, to be honest, personally, I don't think Americans in particular are stupid... I think people are stupid (on average). The problem is, Americans are, again, on average, the ones least aware of their own stupidity

That means your quote should have said :

That's why it's ironic.

Just talk to your fellow Americans. Go to a local pub and see if anyone knows what the Munich Agreement is. Or who Neville Chamberlain is. Or if ****** was working with al-Qaida. Or how many people think the earth is less than 10,000 years old (45% in the last poll I saw). Ask them what the value of Pi is. Ask them what Pi is. Ask them who their Senator and congressmen are.
Man...the list goes on and on. Hopefully you get the point.
Note none of that has to do with opinion. Just simple, basic knowledge. After that it is no wonder opinion is all messed up.

Because the average IQ of people across the world is defined as being 100, and I consider people of "average" intelligence to be quite stupid. You need to go into the top 10% (so, around IQ 110-120, give or take, and also depending on particular measurement scale used, there's at least 3 separate standards) to even begin to consider those people "not stupid". And even then, "not stupid" still doesn't mean "clever".
So, it's much simpler to just say "people are stupid".

Ordinarily picking on grammar/spelling/punctuation on the forums is a non-starter for a variety of reasons but you have to admit if your point is asking why someone thinks Americans are dumb and you write like a 1st grader then it does sort of play into the Americans are dumb bit don't you think?
This is one case where paying attention to that would have made a lot of sense.

Eh?
Those "news" surveys are well grounded in statistical accuracy. A poll taken by a legitimate polling organization has scientific validity. There is a lot more to it than, "We called ten people and asked them a question."
And again, just go to your local pub or workplace and see for yourself. Ask who their Senator is. Or who the Governor is. If they know that ask them what those politicians' position is on [whatever is a current issue in your area].
Heck, watch the video in the link again. That go was yapping about things that were provably wrong. Presumably he is educated. I just cannot decide if he actually knows the right answer but has a career spouting rhetoric or if he really is that clueless. Given his lack of an answer to Matthews I am leaning towards actually clueless. And yet he apparently bends the ear of thousands of listeners who probably figure he knows what he is talking about.

I am American (I live in Chicago).
Also it is difficult to say who "invented" the computer since there were a lot of bits that put together led up to a computer and many people did that. An Indian mathematician invented the binary system in something like 200 BC. Charles Babbage (British) essentially designed what could have been the first computer if anyone had the tech to actually build one then. Then the Brits, Germans and Americans all built things like computers. You can quibble over which was the first computer (again that definition can actually vary).
Anyway, I am not saying all Americans are dumb. No doubt it has turned out some fantastically brilliant people. Just your average American is somewhat lacking IMO.

Yes, what has ANYBODY who's not an "American" EVER done ANYTHING that contributed to the world ? I mean, we all know, the history of mankind STARTED when Americans were created by God right there on that continent, and everything before that was just a clever ploy to plant evidence that would confuse everybody else into believing otherwise ! Also, it's obvious everybody in the whole world OWES the USA and each and every one of its citizens today a debt of gratitude that could never be repaid in any kind, shape or form, ever, until the end of the universe !

Edited by: Spaztick on 20/05/2008 04:58:03 If you think the Presidency has any type of real impact on the government then you should not be posting in this thread. The President can do one thing and only one thing, and that's appoint Supreme Court Judges when one retires (ie jack ****). Yes he "can" do more than that, but it can all be overridden by the Senate or House in one way or another.
If you're serious about politics then don't complain about how bad our President is (bad, good or in between), but instead tell me how your senators and representatives are doing, whether you agree with them or not or who you would put in their place. The President is nothing more than a figure head with no real power; our founding fathers were deathly afraid of another king/dictator type of figure.
I'll save you a step:
House Senate But seriously, more people should have some type of spacer in their sigs to show it's not part of the post. |

The first computers (that could perform calculations) where abacuses. That'd be China. Computers have progressed gradually since then, where do you draw the line at a "real" computer?
Quote: made by an AMERICAN company.
Nope, -mostly- made in China/Korea/Japan. Most electronic components are.
I won't go on about how many non-American inventions there are. Stop being arrogant, the first step to getting respect is giving it. I've met plenty of nice Americans, and a couple nasty ones. I've met plenty of nice Canadians, and a couple nasty ones. Most people are dumb. Their nationality doesn't factor too much into it.
