This is a myth cultivated by true carebears. The harsh truth is: Carebears are not needed in Eve. PvPers are needed. All PvPers have means of income that normally encompass what is known as "carebearing activities".
The people who does nothing but mine or missions and want nothing to do with the competitive side of Eve are not, nor ever where, needed.
Actually, both are equally needed in Eve.
The carebears give Eve the population that is needed (what was the latest stat...over 80% of Eve live in Empire?), as well as help stable the economy. Some will eventually go to pvp, while others will not...so they are actually the growth base for the PvP population. They also bring in named modules (from missions), minerals (missiones and mining), and materials (missions and production).
PvPers are needed because they help drive the economy due to demand for these said ships and modules when they die.
Furthermore, your argument is odd. You say "carebears are not needed in Eve" then state that almost all pvpers have a carebear alt. So in essence they are "needed." Does it really matter if a person's main is the carebear? If you mean they never contribute anything else to Eve, they do.
They bring competitive pricing in the market, as well as they themselves help drive the market with their needs (ships, ammo, materials for building).
=== In Eve, never bring a knife to a knife fight.
