This might sound dumb, but forgive me, it's been a looong time since I mined at length, and it really wasn't anything in-depth.
If a hauler has a capacity of, say, 5000 m3, if you mine straight into your hauler, would you get the same amount of ore as you would if you hauled the jetcanned ore?
I just mine straight into the hauler. It's slower and less efficient, but obviously I'm getting the same yield, right?

Yup.
However, it's the most inefficient way to mine. And pirates love to "play" with afk miners in industrial ships.
You should read miner's guide by Halada, it's in the stickies

Generaly your better off mining with a cruiser and running it back to the station(heck your better off mining with a destroyer and flying it back to the station) than to Hauler mine
now if your running 2 accounts and one is a miner and the other is a hauler thats better. just be sure you can split attention between the two.

No, you're not getting the same yield. "But Wayson 5000m3 = 5000m3!"
Yes, if you like spending hours using a single Miner II to get it. You would make AT LEAST twice, certainly more than that in yield if you used a Cruiser. The only reasons to mine in a hauler are sheer laziness or a lack of any other ship with more than one turret slot. ___ Victory smiles upon those who anticipate the changes in the character of war, not upon those who wait to adapt themselves after they occur. ~Guilio Douhet |

So if you're only option other than mining in a Hauler is mining in a Phoenix you should....?

The best way to mine to date (also the most expensive - coincidence much?) is to use a Hulk with Cargo expanders (rigs and lows), to get somewhere around 25k cargo space.
This covers hauling and mining in one ship (25k is about 1 jetcan), so all you really need to worry about is finding a good system and a mineral buyer

Obviously you haven't tried it, as warping to and back from station each time your cargo is filled would render you insane in no time.
Unless you have very good reasons to suspect thief, use the jetcan technique. If thieves are around, gank them

Somewhere around ? nowhere around !
Just over 17k with T1 rigs gets less than 19k with T2's.
The best way to mine is find quiet system, get youself mining into a jetcan and come back and grab ore with a hauler.
Having said that i mine with an expanded hulk if solo, take out cargo exp's and put in mining upgrade's for a gang.

I put 4 Secure Containers, anchored, around the belt. Then fill'em up with the Osprey and go get hauler. Been doing this for over a month with no problems. My corp runs the same type of operation in .5 as a group with over watch and a barge or 2. Works well.

This will work for a low level miner. However I can fly a hulk which is capable of filling a GSC in about 3 Min's bringing back the insanity statement. The honest truth is you will loose some ore to ore thieves the answer is very simple I have a buddy sitting about 50km away in a stealth bomber cloaked and guarding the mining operation and he loves killing haulers or you just deal with the loss of a little ore.

My Occator can hold a little over a jet can worth of Ore. It takes me 10 minutes to fill a jet can. It takes me 1.5 to fill a GSC, note that that is not even a full cycle of all my lasers.
That is why most people jet can mine, since GSCs are just outclassed by Mining Barges.
However a safer alternative is replacing your Mining Upgrades with Expanded Cargo hold 2's and adding cargo rigs. This will allow you to hold quite a significant amount of m3 (Hulk's have 8km3 base), and you can skip the hauler all together.
Personally I prefer the ~10% mining bonus from 2 T2 upgrades though

If you use 4 Giant Secure containers and one Huge Secure Container, you can fit just over 22K m3.

not to get off subject, but once you get your hulk, what do you need to train/buy to get this level of cargo capacity?

My guess is T2 cargo expanders, T1 cargo rigs (because let's be honest, no one uses T2 rigs) and GSCs in your cargo hold (which strangely only take up 3k m3 each but hold more than their volume :S). ___ Victory smiles upon those who anticipate the changes in the character of war, not upon those who wait to adapt themselves after they occur. ~Guilio Douhet |

i assume "Cargo Rigs" are on market if I search for it?

Mining leads to madness! If you really need isk just sell time codes, you get 350m for a 90 day. Get a 2nd job irl and use that money to buy time codes. It is much more efficent time wise to just made money irl compaired to fake money in-game.
I think all of the barges I see are bots. Not enough isk to play this way. Run missions or gank outside jita like everyone else. Click here for my High Security POS Service

You're kidding, right? And where is the space you supposed to be mining into? A strip or a modulated strip require cargo hold space to output the ore into. You can't mine directly into a GSC and 1 modulated strip with good skills yields ~1,490m3 per 3 minute cycle...

Shows how much YOU know about mining. "If I really need isk" I spend real monet on "fake money". Eve is a GAME. It may be less time consuming to earn the money for time codes, but a game is FUN. A job is less so. Also not all people take a game seriously enough to get a second job just to get some "fake money".
And basicly you think all barges are bots? Right.....

actually, mining in an expanded hulk is the same as, or more profitable than lvl 3/low quality lvl 4 missions, without the constant threat of getting lag killed by mission rats (minus 80 mil worth of fitted/rigged BC each time).
But if you want to see bot barges... fly over to Outuni, in The Forge (just 4 jumps from Jita) and check out the ice belt. 30-40 bots/macros in system at any one time. What i wouldn't give for a free Raven and a rack of good smartbombs (accepting donations ) ::insert witty signature here:: |
