I've been shooting up some blood raiders in .4 and I killed a commander, ended up with a (small commander wreck) tried to salvage it, and it says it's too difficult? No!!!
I'm currently training salvaging to level 3 but I don't know if the salvaging skill is even what determines if it's too difficult or not. Is it?
By the way, is there a t2 salvager? I haven't seen one.
Any help is appreciated!

Commander spawns require 3 I think, as do most tech 2 ships - May as well train it to 4 anyway - less salvaging cycles and lets you do some of the nice things like tech 2 bs and I *think* capitals. --

You need the Salvaging skill at 4, I think, to salvage T2 wrecks.
There is no T2 salvager module.

Actually only L3 is required to salvage T2 wrecks. There really is no reason to train it further. Train something more usefull instead. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Legion of Shadow is looking for recruits. |

Well i would say saving your time is a good reason to go to at least lvl 4 :P
I salvage all the time, have 2 characters, 1 has lvl 3 and other lvl 4. The lvl 4 can and does salvage many more wrecks in the same amount of time. So if you want to get it without failing as often and you salvage a lot, go to lvl 4.
If it is just there in case, then ya lvl 3 is good.

It's like an extra 5% salvage chance/cycle ? It's not that it isn't nice to have, but there so many better skills you could be training if you are starting out, like energy systems operation/managment for example.
If you fit a destroyer as a super salvager (4*salvager - 4*small tractor beam - afterburner - expanded cargo holds - some cap thingie) I salvage faster than I can lock targets/move to them :)

If you want to increase your speed with which the salvager works train Survey to level 4. O that makes salvaging so quick!!!!

If the salvager gives 15% chance to salvage, and you improve that to 20%, isn't that kind of a huge upgrade?

How does it work exactly? Is the lvl 3 some arbitrary limit or do t2 wrecks give like -10% chance(just an example) to salvaging? In the latter case lvl 4 salvaging would definitely be worth training.

Edited by: Slade Trillgon on 21/05/2008 23:01:00 Think of it like this.
Level 1 you have a 5% chance to obtain salvage from basic wrecks.
Level 2 you have a 10% chance to obtain salvage from basic wrecks.
Level 3 you have a 15% chance to obtain salvage from all wrecks.
Level 4 and 5 you have a 20% and 25% chance to salvage from all wrecks.
Train Survey to level 4 if you want to do the above faster.

That's correct. All wrecks have salvage difficulty and T2 is -10. You need to have atleast 5% chance to try to salvage. Thus afaik you should be able to salvage T2 with the rigs even with Salvaging level 1.
Having 3x Salvage Tackle I and level 4 Salvaging gives you chance of 40% to salvage T2 wrecks.

I'll believe this answer is more likely to be correct then. Seems to fit with people reporting that it takes longer to salvage T2 wrecks. That would not be the case, if there were no chances in the chance of salvaging. Thanks for both answers anyway.

AFAIK it has no influence on salvaging.

If I remember correctly survey has to be trained to L3 before you can train survey

Survey increase your effectiveness with scanner by dropping the scan time by 5% per level. Salvagers are scanners therfore you need level 3 to use them and level 4 makes it another 5% faster and level 5 would make salvaging 10% faster then you start with.
EDITED from earlier post to what I think has been made clear to me.
Think of it like this.
Level 1 you have a 5% chance to obtain salvage from basic wrecks.
Level 2 you have a 10% chance to obtain salvage from basic wrecks.
Level 3 you have a 15% chance to obtain salvage from T1 and 5% chance for T2 wrecks.
Level 4 and 5 you have a 20% and 25% chance to salvage from T1wrecks & a 10% and 15% chance to salvage parts from T2 wrecks.
Train Survey to level 4 if you want to do the above faster.

Hunh. I guess that makes sense.
Training Salvager increases your odds of salvaging. Training Survey increases the speed of each cycle.
I'll have try that.
One more thing.
I've read somewhere that you need Salvager 5 to salvage Battleships or something like that but haven't salvaged any myself (my characters are all at level 4) so I don't know if that's true or not.
And yeah training Level IV is definitely worth while. If you're just ratting and cleaning up 2 or 3 wrecks it doesn't matter that much but if you're salvaging Worlds Collide or some such plethora of wrecks it sure as hell does.

@Slade
The base scanning time of a salvager is 10 sec. With lvl 3 survey it is still 10 sec, so I think it has no influence.
This thread confirms it: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=521594
Since I do not have lvl 4 survey, I am not 100% sure.

That thread has no blue in it and you only gave me the amount of time it takes for a salvager to scan at level 3. Do you have level 4 survey trained? If no then I will try to check this when I get on later on. Remeber that 15% of 10 secs is only 1.5 secs and I hypothesize that the reaction time from seeing the failed attempt to stopping the watch could be anywhere between approximatly (edit .12-.25) secs depending on states of inebriation or lack there of.
Salvager is under the scanner heading in the item database and until I see a response that can truely prove me wrong then I stick by my guns.

Uhm, I did not stop anything... I just fited a salvager and the time did not change in the info menu (which happens with every other module influenced by skills, e.g. my survey scanner). It is always 10 sec for me.

LOL True I did not think of that. But but that could be a bug between the skill link and the fitting menu.
Slade wonders if anyone ever put in a bug report on this matter. Survey clearly states scanner time reduction, so by definition the time should drop. I will pull a stopwatch out later. That all being said I do not think that placebo effect would be a consistant effect as it has to do with me feeling like the scan time is is like 2 seconds faster then before.
