Oh gurus of OOPE, I hereby ask you for a recommendation regarding a passively cooled graphics card. I have seen reviews of the PowerColor 3870 and also seen mention of the Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 which could be fitted onto an 8800GTS or ATI3870, although the width of that cooler makes me wonder whether it will fit into my case. I am pondering an upgrade from my current X19500XTX and would like it to be as quiet as possible. Hence the passive cooling thoughts. No, I do not want to fiddle with water cooling just yet. Suggestions? Thoughts? |

Mandatory bad joke post:
Just rip off the GPU fan and stick your computer in the fridge when running it.
Other than that, I've been out of the modding cycle so long I wouldn't know where to start advising you. |

Here is a good article from X-bit Labs. I won't even try to summarize it here, those guys are way too thorough.
Doesn't talk about the PowerColor but it is a good start to compare from.
There is always liquid cooling too although that can be expensive.
Personally I did not think those temps were all that great in passive mode but they seemed happy with them. One way or another you'll need to move air through the case so one way or another there are fans in your future.

the asus silencer line comes prefitted/tested with passive cooling block if you don't want to muck about with it yourself, i'm sure there's some more efficient ones you can put on tho especially if you are planning on running sli, but you can consider it anyways |

If you REALLY want a quiet system you could always immerse your whole PC in mineral oil.
Not kidding.
Don't think I could ever bring myself to do that though.

Not to derail teh thread too much but that PC/aquarium looks really cool. Bigest downside I can see is that it would be f***ing heavy, and a pain to move. ***** Rule 27: 'Don't be afraid to be the first to resort to violence.' -The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Pirates [schlockmercenary.com] |

Whisper, just as an fyi:
I have a g80 8800gts that uses EVGA's cooler and I don't even hear the card spin up on POST, let alone on it's 60% setting for 3d apps. It's only when I manually set it to 100% that I can even hear it, and it never hits that speed on it's own.
If you don't have a fully silenced system otherwise, are you sure you need the silent gpu system? The heatsink coolers don't get very good reviews tbh and almost any system will be far louder than a video card.
Also, I'd still buy an 8800 gt/9800 over the current generation of ATI. Just my opinions, of course.

Not to mention the new Nvidia G280 is due to hit the street on June 18. If rumors are true it is supposed to be a speed demon of a card with some reports saying it is twice as fast as a 9800GX2 . Presumably it will run Crysis at 1920x1200 with AA and AF on no problems.
Unfortunately anyone who has actually seen and played with one is under an NDA so actual results are hard (read impossible) to come by. Even so, regardless of performance, it will almost certainly mean a drop in price on the rest of their line (and IIRC ATI is releasing whatever their new card is a day or two before Nvidia so same should hold true for their lineup as well).

Hi, it¦s not possible to cool a 8800GT or 3870 pasiv with an Accelero S1...
I personaly use an VF1000 LED (Zalman) on my 8800GT with the fanmate control on lowest RPM, it¦s totaly noiseless... and the tempretatures never get over 55¦C (stock cooler works at 90¦C)
Pasiv cooling solutions always require a good case cooling which makes noise... with good aircoolers u can run alle the fan¦s at lowest rpm ab stay below 24db (1 Sone)
Running Q6600@3,2ghz with Scythe Mugen at 800RPM GeForce 8800GT @ 735/1800/1015 with Zalman VF1000 at 900rpm 3x 120mm casefan at 500rpm
my PC is nearly noiseless... and stays cool :)

this card has some good reviews
asus en9600gt silent
cheap enough to run a nifty silent sli setup.

I'd say mixed reviews rather than good - it's silent, but it runs very hot. Two of them in the same box would probably be asking for trouble unless you had an enormous number of case fans. My research services Spreadsheets: Top speed calculation - Halo Implant stats |

Sparkel's silent 8800GT got reviewed by Anandtech awhile back. It had no performance lost over standard 8800GT's, was completley passively cooled, and would not overheat in the most nightmare HTPC scenario possible.
Could be exactly what your looking for.

Thanks for (almost) all the recommendations. It looks like I might need to consider a new case if I go with passive cooling for the graphics card. The Silverstone TJ-09 gets good reviews and with that cooling fan blowing over the GPU area it would be perfect. Could swap out the 120mm fans for some Akasa Ambers or similar if they are too loud. Doubt the Coolermaster Centurion I have now has enough throughput to cool everything well, not with 4 80mm fans. Either that or I look into getting an Antec P182. I remember a mate of mine building his system into a P180 and you never heard more than a whisper from it.
