I've decided to dust off one of my other accounts and starting training her up as a research/industry alt... but I have no idea how to build standings easily. Are courier missions any good and, if so, what's the most efficient way of doing them - like, which divisions are best to look for, should I stick with lower level and do them quickly or higher level and get bigger boosts, or what?
Is it reasonable to assume that the corps with lots of refining/production stations will also have lots of agents I can do missions for that don't involve shooting at stuff? Or is it easier to just park in a station somewhere, fleet up with my main and do missions like that?

don't remember who it was, but someone once poster how he figured out the perfect courier agents setup. he would work like 10 agents at one time working outwards fron a dead end system and was getting 1-2 storyline missions a day. basically he would start int he dead end system and pick up al the courier missions there, and as he went further out and finished the mission he would pick up a few more missions in those systems, and it just spiderweb'ed from there.

Couriers, or "Share" Missions with your other character. Just keep the other char in your gang, and always share the rewards. Which is more efficient depends on a lot of things. Maybe do both?

Jessamine was the poster but he/she has edited out the post so as to undo the advice.
Find a system (like Airkio) that has many low level courier agents in the system or no more than 1 jump out. Run missions for as many of the agents as you have standings to use as quickly as you can to get high corp standing and faction gain (you get a storyline every 16 missions) then move to an area (like Umokka) that has many high level courier agents. Rinse and repeat. Keep note of all the courier agents you have access to using eve-agents and eve-geek. then make it a point to drop in and get a courier mission from each agent you pass. Be aware that Manufacturing and Production agents kinda suck now because they give a lot of mining missions. Use Marketing and Distribution agents as much as possible.
Patri
P.S. I plan to recreate Jessamine's Guide on couriers and faction standings in the near future. He/She only took the guide down to protect his/her corp creation business. I liked Jessamine moar when he/she was in it to help the community.

Mining missions work very well as well (if you have good mining skills). A bit slow though since about a third of the missions the agents hand out are combat missions and if you can't do them you'll end up having to wait to decline them frequencly.

If you work for Astral Mining in Aufay, you can get 4 level 4 agents in the same system who hand out a mix of mining, courier and combat missions. It's a great way to build faction standing quickly. ------------

For a while after the old mining missions (read: fetch me some Veldspar) got removed Astrosurveying handed out 85% combat missions. I cleaned up in Aufay.
Now, those nasty mining missions every 2-3 pulls. One of my alts flies a hulk with good skills and I still refuse to mine 40,000 m^3 for no ISK and just a few LP! Abandon agents!
The fastest way to grind up an alt is:
1. Share L4s enough to get access to L2/L3 COSMOS agents for the target faction. Estimated 10 missions or 5-6 hours. 2. Do the L3 COSMOS agent blitz to get faction standing high enough to pull L3s. Estimated 3-4 hours. 2. Pull L3 combats to finish with main while doing L3 couriers until you can grind L4 couriers. 1 day. 3. Grind L4 couriers until finished.
You can have standings high enough for L4s in about a weekend with some practice.

Use this post to gain Caldari faction fast. It is THE guide to courier missions in Caldari space. Despite devious attempts to remove it from existence.
Jessamine's Lost Courier Guide
The only thing I would add to this masterpiece is to try to only use Marketing and Distribution agents. Manufacturing and Production agents now give too many mining missions IMHO.

P.S. post above me estimates 5-6 hours of level 4 mission sharing to get an alt to L2-L3 COSMOS. Not sure how that is possible. Cosmos requires faction standings and you can not share faction gained from storylines.

Are you sure? When I last tried this (and it wasn't that long ago) agents had a corp as well as faction -- so 2.1 standings with Brutor tribe and > -2 factions standing was enough to pull COSMOS missions from COSMOS agents in Brutor Tribe. Which is most of them.
I know I was able to pull Caldari Navy COSMOS missions in spite of having negative faction standings (but positive CN standings).
I'll try to verify this next time my negative faction yet positive Brutor tribe/Republic Fleet standings alt is near Metro.
