I've been thinking a lot, how we could solve the problem of ore thieves. I havent really cared about them, as about 90% of the time i'm mining with haulers, but recently i saw something shocking.
A few newbies of my corp were having trouble mining in KISOGO - yes, thats a starter system - as certain players were going after their cans.
We had no chance to do anything against the thieves, as they were all members of the same starting corp - what a suprise.
Same night i had a talk with one of my friends (namely ake da), and he had a 'brilliant' idea. As he just pointed out, the feature to 'protect' things you jettison is already in the game. Just look at the spawn containers for pirates. You cant take anything from those, as long as they are 'protected' by their owners, the pirates.
Well, the same could apply for jet. containers as well. Just add a 'protect' option to them. How would this work?
- If you are within 2km of a container, you can start to protect it (unless someone else already does that) - Once you protect ('claim') a container, you have to stay within 10km of it, otherwise it would become 'free' for anyone to take (or protect) - Containers jettisoned by you would be protected by default. - Only you and players in you gang would be allowed to open a can protected by you.
well, to spice things up - and keep thivery a viable alternative - you can allow the opening of cans in all cases, but the unauthorized opening of a protected can should be considered a minor agression against the whole gang of the protector.
This would simply allow people and those within the same gang to retaliate, attack the thief.
Thats about it. Sure you should be able to pick up stuff floating around, but people should have the right to defent what they claim to be theirs. ------------- This post is nothing more than my personal opinion. Its a nice idea but it depends on what way CCP want to go - if they want the secure cans/ ore thief route to be viable then they wont do this - just think if this was possible then secure cans would never be sold again.... Also i think ppl that just say - mine into secure cans... has never tried it for themselves....

Anyone who's progressed to jet-can mining doesn't count as a newbie.
Want security? Mine to you hold. Want speed? Risk losing it to scavengers.
Want everything your own way regardless of others? Write your own damn game.

In some cases, you cant use those, plus they are kinda worthless for any serious mining, considering their insane size and low cargo capacity.
Would they have 27500m3 cargo, taking up only about 100m3 space in my hold (sure you shouldnt be able to pack into them while they are in cargo), i would be the first to use the secure cans. Not before that.
Thanks for your *constructive* feedback. Sure those newbies are helped out by telling them - use secure cans - where they a) dont even have the skills for those, and b) dont have the money to affor and the ships to transport them to where they mine. ------------- This post is nothing more than my personal opinion. the only instance i can see where sec cans are a problem is for the very new player who doesnt know all/cant afford this stuff yet and gets shafted by an ore thief
but then... allowing a n00b to shoot up an indy with a gattling or 2 isnt exactly a feasible answer either

Anyone who has done the tutorial knows how to jettison stuff, and anyone having a corp willing to help out at least with some tips knows how to mine into jettison cans. So do not come with the 'jettison mining' is not a newbie thing sh*t.
Read my post, and you'll realize that i do not want everything, in fact i want to see balance.
Current system: miner mines for an hour, thief comes, takes everything, miner can only swear and throw insults at him. Not even that, as said thief can easily peition him for harassment then. - is that right for you?
My porposl: miner mines for an hour, thief comes, takes everything, miner's guard just goes after him and tries to catch/destroy said thief before he reches station. - is this unfar ? does it sound like if i would want to make thievery impossible?
FFS people, read that damn post, and THINK about it for at least a minute before you post a reply. Thanks.

im not saying i want to mine into unlimited size secure cans - so dont flame me - but mining into secure cans is not an option for large scale mining opertations - just think ud need 3-4 huge secure cans for each bs if u want to mine for longer than about 10 minutes - then when u have mined out that section move the secure cans.... Basically they dont work so they arent an option. The answer is - move to unsecure space where u can retailate.... on yes and then get ganked by pirates cos u are 'firing blanks'. This is the reason i stopped mining and moved to missions. Im not a carebear - i dont have to go to 0.0 for pvp - i have 4 very active wars going on so empire isnt exactly safe either - but i dont want to mine somewhere where i can get ganked by more than the local npcs (which in 0.0 are hard in some batches anyway). The simple answer - stop mining.... missions in empire pay more than mining does - and are marginally less borning.

i was just thinking that i hadn't seen a thread about jet can mining for, oooh, at least an hour, and then *poof* one appears.
<<< insert ridiculous analogies about (a) muggers, (b) your wifes purse, (c) bags of money in trash cans, and (d) shooting burglars >>>
also could someone post a dictionary definition of the word 'jettison' again, as I have forgotten what it means during the 60 minutes that have elapsed since the last thread on this subject

no, never been an ore thief
just a bit thick, not figuring out jet can mining was possible
confession: i did rob a can once, when i encountered an afk miner sitting in a pod... i left him alone to start with, but when i came back an hour later and he was still floating there... well, i went and got me indy!

Watch your step Meowcat, a fall from you EGO to your IQ may be fatal - even for a cat.
I don't give **** how many threads are popping up about ore thieves and jet cans. As long as my newbie corp members are harassed by lamers in empire space, hiding behind newbie corps and 3 day old alts, i will not rest.
Its exactly the ammount of threads that shows, its a significant issue, and needs a solution. I've got a possible solution to discuss? What have you got?
Oh wait, you havent even taken the time to read the initial post, not to mention any replies. Well my dear cat, thats called: trolling.
Thanks for your precious time, sharing your 'oh so important' opinion with us.

im afraid to say that there will not a be a 'solution' CCP doesnt like jet can mining.... therefore the solution it wants is to move ppl into less secure space to relieve the stress on the servers

Given that this rant is usually associated with an 'OMG Kestrel Suicide alts are t3h sux0rz, theyre too easy to train'... I suggust you simply make one and pop every threatening indy that you see.
A simple enough solution that anyone can do - simply take the time you've alloted for complaining about this problem and fix it. -------------------------------------------- CONCORD: Kneecapping Pilots for Misdemeanors Since 2003 |

Well, they have all right to change jet cans, so they only have a max capacity of say: 5000m3, and limit your capacity to deploy 1/system/hour.
That would stop jet can mining for sure. Then again, it wouldnt mean a solution for the problem, and will severly limit the income of certain player specialising on mining.
Why dont they create a can, that can fit the cargo of a medium sized ship, but has a vastly increased cargo capacity, when anchored: name it an 'inflatable cargo container' 100m3 capacity in cargo, 5000m3 capacity anchored.

Why? Mining is probably the most boring thing in EVE, and you want to require people to sit actively at their computer during the entire operation that might take 3-4 hours?
I like realism, and this game offers much of that. Now...the only thing that ISN'T real is the fact that you can't attack ore thieves without concord blowing you out of the sky
Stealing is a part of life, just in the real world we have counterbalances and ways to deal with it. EVE doesn't have ONE way to deal with thieves. If I'm mining into a jet. can and some Iteron V comes up and scoops it, I can't do a DAMN thing. Can't shoot them, can only lock onto them hoping that will scare them away. CRIMINAL FLAGGING. Jesus I was in a 1.0 system, 5 concord ships were hanging around 5k m away, and I saw an indy steal some Ibis newb's jet. can, and the cops didn't do a DAMN THING. You're telling me in real life if you steal something right in front of a cop he won't do anything about it? Don't think so... _____________________________________________________________

If you want some excitement will mining, come on out to 0.0 space I'm experiencing for the first time, and there NOTHING dull about it . Always on the look out for the next spawn or real pirates while trying to mine and get the ore to refineries!! Now that's exciting.
And the best part, NO ore theives jet can or not!!!
