Summary: I'd like to ask why turrets appear in the same location regardless of what high slot they're in... and why those positions are invariably uneven, at least on the ships I've flown.
I admit to being a perfectionist, which is probably why this bothers me so much... it's not something that'll change the way I fit ships, and it's by no means a big problem, but come on now...
Fit a Rokh with six turrets, four go on one side and two on the other, instead of three on each. Fit it with four turrets, and all four go on one side with none on the other. With only two turrets they'd probably both be on one side, as well. (this is not counting the second turret that goes with each, since they're arranged in the same way, just on the front of the ship.)
Fit a Ferox with four turrets, and there will be three on the front and one sitting all the way in the back instead of two in the front and two in the back, or four all in front.
I know Caldari ships aren't supposed to be symetrical, but it would be nice (and hopefully a minor change, codewise) to have the turrets match up.
It's just a little iritation, but I thought I'd voice my opinion. I'd really like to know if there's a reason, at least. Doesn't seem like it's asking THAT much to have them arranged evenly, or placed based on the slot they're in.

Turrets are actually doubled, so 1 turret fitted shows up as 2 turrets on the ship. The reason for this is that you need to have full coverage of all guns, no matter where your target is. Depending on the ship, that might not be a symmetric line-up, but that's just the way they have been designed...
As for turrets not placed in the right slot, no clue why it couldn't be done, but I don't really care much about it. I just shoot stuff

I know, I did mention above that I wasn't counting the second set as all it does is have the same issue in reverse. For example...
Rokh with six guns - top rear batteries have 4 on the right side, 2 on the left. Bottom forward batteries have four on the left and two on the right.
I was asking if it would be possible for it to be three on the left and three on the right instead.

Part of the coolness of Eve is the asymmetrical design philosophy. It's something that I initially didn't like, but have grown to love. |

I do like some on the asymetrical ship designs, but when you come across the rare symetrical Caldari ship, it seems like it would follow that said ship would have the turrets placed symetrically, right?
It's mostly a question of taste, so I'd greatly prefer it to be based on the slot the weapon's placed in. It could work, easily enough, unless CCP has a good reason that I can't figure out.

I also admit to being a symmetrical perfectionist, and hence, it took me awhile to get used to Eve Online, where asymmetry happens to be a selling point. In the case of the turrets, every one turret you fit results in two turrets on the ship in space. One on one side/corner ship, and the other on the complete opposite side/corner to give full coverage. At the very least, turret placement is functional, even if it lacks the aesthetic appeal you and I like. But yes, if CCP could make the aesthetic appearance of the turrets based on which slot they're in, it would make it easier for us. ---

Again, the fact that placing one turret on the ship puts a second on as well is completely beside the point on the ships I'm referring to.
Rokh with four turrets in the highs -> a Rokh with four turrets on the right and four on the left... but four are in the upper right and the other four are on the bottom left. Rather than two on the upper right and two on the upper left, and two more on each side of the bottom.

While I still disagree with you on the symmetical-turret thingy, I would like CCP to look at instances where turret images do impossible things.
For example, in the following pic, the electron blasters on a phobos clip into each other. I've seen similar things happen with rail images on the moa (please don't post any pics, that thing is fugly).

Also, for everyone replying with "1 instaleld turret = 2 displayed turrets," please re-read the OP, carefully this time.
EDIT: Fixed forum fail :x

for the record; that's true for all the different Thorax models.

I understand what you're saying, and agree. What more can I say?
If there is a reason for why it is the way it is, it's laziness. And honestly, I can sympathize with laziness. It's the only reason I can accept for this. ---

I could really care less where my turrets are placed as long as they can shoot stuff. Although 1 time when I tried making a rainbow-laser boat(for the lulz) It took a while to get the frequency crystals placed right so the broadside would have the colors in the right order, because the turret order on your ship and on your UI don't seem to have anything in common.
I can live without symmetrical turrets though. I'll survive

It would be cooler if CCP added Firing acrh's for the guns, it would make the game more interesting.

Agreed... better positions + making large weapons actually LARGER than the smalls would be welcome... though I suppose CCP will probably dismiss this threat as super-low-priority anyway.
I also agree with one of the other people above... as long as it shoots, the little annoyances won't kill me.

Edited by: P''uck on 26/05/2008 18:17:50 I see I'm not the only one that thinks that, especially on dedicated gunships like... well... every turretbased combat vessel thats cruiser size and above, turrets look TOO FRIGGIN small?
surely you dont need THAT much hull to operate some peashooters?

Actually I think that cruiser+ is fine.
It is it the frigates that have guns that are TOO FRIGGIN huge.
The turrets shouldn't be so large that turning them would be expected to turn the entire ship.
Case in point look at a fitted Atron: the turrets are about a quater of the length of the ship.

I want to se a Megathron where the guns are where they are supposed to be, not dotted randomly. 5 in the front 2 areas (on the outside of each arm) and 2 on each side in the back areas (on the bits at the bottom). It seems as if these were origionally designed to house the guns (like they are in the 'Geddon) but then CCP changed their mind?

Has any one else noticed that not only do turret positions not correspond to certain high slots but they donĘt even correspond to the order in which they are placed.
If you were to try fitting a coercer with two different types of turrets you would see that it is impossible to arrange the guns into blocks of 4 of the same type.
My apologies to people who cant visualize the coercer I donĘt have the time to illustrate this. But if you put in four guns of the same type they will occupy eight nice symmetrical positions. But if you add another four guns of a different type, one of the eight positions they add guns to will switch with one of those that was occupied by the previous type. This bugs the hell out of me. Fortunately I donĘt fly destroyers.

My Armageddon seems to have a mis-arranged turret on the top of it's head and the bottom of it's tail. All the other turrets correspond (I don't care how or where on the slots they are placed), it's just that one 'slot' that irks me.

My guess on turrets being too big for small ships is they're all around the same size, so they look big on tiny ships and tiny on big ships.
The way in which they're arranged, especially when fitting different types of turrets, is total nonsense. It's as if they just rolled dice to figure out where turrets should go when certain combinations and numbers were fitted, then locked the results in place, no matter how bizzare they looked.
