The results of the last snapshot showed that only 18% of players are Amarr, and that seems to me like a very low percentage, especially considering 41% is Caldari (or something near there). So I asked alot of people why it is that Amarr is so unpopular (being an Amarrian player myself, I couldn't see anything less than awesome about the faction, lasers FTW!).
The responses varied, old players always said "cause they suck...but that was before all the beefs so I don't know anymore."
Everyone else said that the selection screen picture is unattractive, all the factions have hot chicks in the background of the selection screen except for the Amarr faction. As silly as I found this explanation to be, it seemed to be almost unanimous amongst the people I asked.
Therefore, I think that CCP should change the background for Amarr in the selection screen to make it the characters appear more attractive, first impressions go a long way so it'll probably help alot.
NOW TO APPEAL TO EXPERIENCED PLAYERS:
I'm not going to ignite the flame-war of lasers vs. everything else and the fairness of cap-use, etc. Rather I'd state a much clearer case much more simply. 41% of players are Caldari players, and around 23% are minmatar. this means that it is more likely to encounter shield tankers than it is to encounter armor tankers. Well, Lasers deal very high EM and Thermal damage with incredible RoF and good DM, so they are designed to destroy shields. simply by probability, it should seem clear that you would be at an advantage over your enemy more often than not if you are using lasers, for your enemy will more often than not, be a shield tanker. Therefore, raising an Amarrian character should prove advantageous.

I could be wrong but there are no direct stats about how popular Amarr ships are. The question of why only 18% choose Amarr characters is probably due to their backstory (partly why I didn't choose them) or appearance or something ultimately meaningless in the context of the game itself. I mean, people getting into the game have no appreciation for the criticisms often leveled at Amarr ships or whatever, so I don't think that has much to do with the low Amarr selection rate.

afaik Amarr was the ****znit at the start of the game and got a hefty swing from the nerf bat, from which they are currently recovering from. However judging who flies what race by what race they start as is kinda silly. Not sure how this translates into faction warfare because I'm lazy.

An Amarr character is the last race that I ever thought I would be playing. I started off Caldari because they were the coolest looking, then I thought Gallente would be fun so I tried that. Then I got bored of those two and gave Minmatar a shot. Then I landed on Amarr. It took me three mistakes to realize what race to play.
The reason why I didn't pick Amarr was the following: 1) Unattractive characters 2) Didn't care for the religious background 3) Yellow/gold colors...ew (not so bad though since Trinity)
Those things aside though, I love being Amarr and wouldn't pick any other race.

I think it is that Amarr have a singularly distasteful backstory. Most Westerners will not groove to a religiously fanatical race of slave owners.
Then if anyone asks they are told lasers suck.
Minmatar seem behind the ball and a bunch of barbarians in flying heaps. If they ask about them they are told they are good but skill intensive.
Gallente sound flaky and lost to Caldari.
If they ask what is best they are told Caldari Achura for starting stats and that Caldari ships are the most effective in PvE as well as the simplest to train up for.
Net result...a zillion Caldari.

For the shallow: yeah, bald and old ain't beautiful.
For the minmaxers: the bloodline stat bonuses (except for possibly Khanid) are teh yuck.
As far as encountering shield tanks PvP: most PvE fits are shield tankers, most PvP fits are armor tankers. Which means if you're ganking PvEers, Amarr ships are the way to fly. But then again, for the usual PvEer gank just about anything works. As far as P&P&P&P&P&P&P&PvP, who cares what you fly so long as your blob has a large enough numerical advantage?
For the record, I have Amarr BS5 and often fly laz0r boats for PvE.

Great responses guys, made me LMFAO. I suppose everyone going Caldari as they are now helps my cause as an Amarrian player more than having more Amarrians, since I get an advantage against them, but the main reason that I bring this up is because of faction warfare which is soon to be introduced to TQ. Now the stats aren't all in on FW but if it involves faction-based PVP then we, as Amarrians, are getting the short end of the stick here and any of us who participate will always be outnumbered...

There's nothing wrong with the Amarr. The back story is appealing IMO; I mean, not everyone wants to be a goody-two-shoes. Amarr are bad, dark, evil etc. Good stuff. Their ships are the best looking in the game AFAIK. They've got the best combat start-up in the Cyberknight, and if they've just been beefed up a little all the better.
Their ships excel at defense so you're hard to kill, but if you don't like lasers cross train another races ships.
If I wasn't a Minnie I'd be an Amarr; the other two races just seem middle of the road to me and don't appeal.

Actually, Amarr and Caldari are aligned with each other and allies. So if you do the math the most populous + the least populous race = about the same as Min + Gallente.

Actually I think the last time I looked at the stats on the Military Intelligence screen Amarr were the second most popular race behind Caldari.
As to why I chose Amarr? No other race would let me make a sinister Medieval Baron looking character. Gallente all look like girls and Minmatar like some bad fashion 80's gang member out of a Halmark movie. Caldari were ok but they all have that 'Clone #85834598' look to them. Well there are some downsides to choosing Caldari. Just try making an Achura named something else than a standard name westerners would recognize, putting in into a Raven and going belt ratting or mission running, or putting it into a Hulk and mining ore with it. People will go to great lengths to find out if you're a macro or not, including convoing you, emailing you, bumping you, as well as flipping your cans and just simply killing you.

I looked through all the races, didn't know jack about the stats, explaining my high initial cha :P
Then I looked again at the Amarr, I swear there was this hot temple chick on the Amarr selection screen back then. No evidence of that now, an image search on Amarr is 50% Amarr and 50% garage doors, wierd.
Anyway the Amarr had lasers. Lasers rock. Now that everyone has had their EM resists nerfed, the total armor on every ship has been doubles and all ships have 25% more cap than they did their even better.
Been Amarr flying Amarr three years now and still having a blast.

A few reasons for me:
1) Ships that were mostly gold were not something attractive to me (They look much better in Trinity however). 2) Their male characters were all...really old, wrinkly and/or deformed, I wasn't really picky there's a limit. 3) Mostly all lasers weapons wasn't appealing either, the Caldari ships and weapons reminded me of Battlestar Galactica . 4) The back story of being a slave holding religious fanatic didn't sit with me well too since I wanted to RP in this game from the start. -------------- "Politics. As exciting as war. Definitely as dangerous... Though in war, you can only get killed once. In politics it can happen over and over."

Amarr got nerfed in so many ways.. in some ereas even more as the other races. It was no use to go for Amarr as in order to be effective you need way more SP then anyother race.
Besides that there ugly.. :) not speaking for my self ofcourse
if you take caldari you can be effective flying BS doing lvl 4 missions in just a couple of months. www.garia.net |
