Originally by: Sentret Proxia The results of the last snapshot showed that only 18% of players are Amarr, and that seems to me like a very low percentage, especially considering 41% is Caldari (or something near there). So I asked alot of people why it is that Amarr is so unpopular (being an Amarrian player myself, I couldn't see anything less than awesome about the faction, lasers FTW!).
The responses varied, old players always said "cause they suck...but that was before all the beefs so I don't know anymore."
Everyone else said that the selection screen picture is unattractive, all the factions have hot chicks in the background of the selection screen except for the Amarr faction. As silly as I found this explanation to be, it seemed to be almost unanimous amongst the people I asked.
Therefore, I think that CCP should change the background for Amarr in the selection screen to make it the characters appear more attractive, first impressions go a long way so it'll probably help alot.
NOW TO APPEAL TO EXPERIENCED PLAYERS:
I'm not going to ignite the flame-war of lasers vs. everything else and the fairness of cap-use, etc. Rather I'd state a much clearer case much more simply. 41% of players are Caldari players, and around 23% are minmatar. this means that it is more likely to encounter shield tankers than it is to encounter armor tankers. Well, Lasers deal very high EM and Thermal damage with incredible RoF and good DM, so they are designed to destroy shields. simply by probability, it should seem clear that you would be at an advantage over your enemy more often than not if you are using lasers, for your enemy will more often than not, be a shield tanker. Therefore, raising an Amarrian character should prove advantageous.
Those numbers will actually varry, cause there might be 41% caldari ppl, but what about the caldarians that fly amarr exclusivly? I know several ppl that are caldari and hardly ever fly there ships. So there might be over 50% of the eve population being caldari and minmatar, but id say the numbers for shield and armor tanks r probably alot closer together then you might think.

look, I hated amarr, their history, ideology behind the race, I even despited the look of their ships, I thought lasers were silly and all I wanted to see was long range missiles flying 'round (Caldari - easy mode ftw)... that was half year ago...
Where am I now? I turned my caldari hero into full time manufacturer and created another 2 accounts for flying nothing but AMARR! I realized that you can't put all people into one bag (history/ideology behind amarr race), I've fallen in love with the look of their ships, and I suddenly enjoy disco show (laser parade) like nothing else before.

If 18% was Amarr and 41% was Caldari. That leaves 41% between Minmatar and Gallente. Or about 20+% each. And in factional terms its 59% vs 41%. Stop whine :p
But the wast space of Amarr is abit bad. If Caldari was 18% and Amarr 41% im sure we would have a better distribution in systems. Abstraction and Transcendence: Nature, Shintai, and Geometry |

Wasn't that, like, you know, a prerequisite for being Amarr ?
Well we also get optional latex, feather dusters and those little silver bells with the handy studs for easy attachment.
To answer the OP: I think it really comes down to the race descriptions for the most part. New players won't really know too much about the game but when you look at the descriptions it pretty much says "Caldari are the best".
Here's a snippet from one of the race descriptions as an example: ...While the Caldari State may not be nearly as big as that of the Gallenteans, let alone the Amarrians, they are still universally feared and admired. Their economy is strong, and their military might parallel to that of the larger empires. Coupled to the fact that they are more unscrupulous than the Gallenteans and more combative than the Amarrians...
I suppose its somewhat ironic that the backstory claims the Caldari have the smallest navy but have the largest number of pod pilots.

Originally by: Dirk Magnum I could be wrong but there are no direct stats about how popular Amarr ships are. The question of why only 18% choose Amarr characters is probably due to their backstory (partly why I didn't choose them) or appearance or something ultimately meaningless in the context of the game itself. I mean, people getting into the game have no appreciation for the criticisms often leveled at Amarr ships or whatever, so I don't think that has much to do with the low Amarr selection rate.
I have to agree that the Amarr back story turned me off right away. They feel evil and very religious, two thinks I dislike in overly religious people in real life. However I agree not having a hot chick as your centerfold is just bad marketing on park of the Amarr.
But you are right Lasers FTW.
PS: Myrms can make some great laser boats as they have no ship bonuses to Turrets just drones and repping and you can make a very good passive cap tank or just have cap boosters. ++++++++++++++++++++++ |

I chose Amarr because of the delicious background story and sinister looking portraits. All other races look quite fairy, except perhaps minnies who are more like early 80s punk rockers.
And I'm glad I did, lasers are awesome, our ships are shiny, it's all good.

Speak for yourselves - the reason I picked Amarr was for the imagery. My god, its bloody awesome.
And a lot of players I know kick themselves every day because the didnt pick amarr...
As for play, they are quite limited, but their tanks certainly kick arse. I'm divided on lasers - the damage is a god send, but the limited spectrum of damage and insane cap use hurts.

You are not a true Amarr unless you have 1. A Cool Helmet 2. Multiple Slaves.

Well, the REAL hard nuts among us, donŠt even need a helmet/cloak, they would make our high-performance brain overheat anyway.
But yeah, iŠve chosen Amarr-Khanid because:
- they sounded like the evil race - the phrase "hard hitting lasers..." Which was an f**king lie at this time - Khanid were reffered as the "dark Amarr" - Black clothes - Everybody "advised" me to roll a caldari char, because they are "so cool"... - I dont wanted to look like Trash Action hero from the 80ies with "Big Jim" as charname - My 1st Minmatar char was at -5 sec standing after the first week
Have to admit, that i regreted it a long time, especially when i saw, that running missions in a raven is so easy, and even the rats give more bounty there. (i know some Gallente and minmatars that fly caldari ships most of their time... )
Hard -> Medium -> Easy -> Caldari
But since i found other content in EVE then PvE, i now know what prophetic insight my divine decision showes today

At the OP - I was origionally going to go Amarr, but just before I made my character I read the wiki articles on EVE, and decided I liked the sound of hit-and-run Minmatar combat and the ability to be flexible...the article also made artillary sound awesome, but I do love Minmatar ships
I have an alt who is Amarr, and I love their ships just as much.
And about most characters being Caldari, I promised myself at the end of my trial period that I'd never have a Caldari char, or fly Caldari ships (my own little bit of RP)
Originally by: Sentret Proxia this means that it is more likely to encounter shield tankers than it is to encounter armor tankers. Well, Lasers deal very high EM and Thermal damage with incredible RoF and good DM, so they are designed to destroy shields.
Minmatar also have some very capable armour tanking ships, and we have naturally high EM and Thermal resists as our racial bonuses...on our armour atleast.

Aren't the Gallente meant to be the frenchies, according to the backstory.
Originally by: Backstory Descendants of Tau Ceti Frenchmen, the Gallenteans remain strong believers in free will and human rights, despite numerous setbacks in their long history.

It was my first week in EVE, and I was cruising around some stargate in my Rifter with my Minnie main. I then saw a Crusader, said for myself "Holy crap! That's the most awesome design EVER!". Trashed the minnie, made a Khanid char and speed trained for interceptors .

Edited by: Amuko on 26/05/2008 14:17:26 No idea, I for some reason started as an Amarr char (hell my first char was amarr but I thought he was the suck so I started over using other ships...), but trained first caldari (not a lot), then Gallente, and a little bit of Minmater, but no Amarr, which I regret so much that I have started an Amarr char about 6 months ago.. Why you ask?
Because they've got these things called ''Lasers''.

The back history for Amarr is pretty horrible and this is why I haven't chosen this.
CCP should re-write it to say the same but with better words in order to attract new players to Amarr.

I think what you need to consider is what percentage of caldari chars train caldari ships? and why?
For my my thoughts are the lifespan of a new char is focussed on making isk. Caldari is an easy race due to missiles to createa a reasonable, sustainable DPS for missions, with a relatively low SP cost. I would also say, however, those whom decide to move to pvp my either crosstrain, or start another character in a more favourable rave with ships which are either a)more popular due to success b) more popular due to SP cost. You rarely see raven's and scorps in pvp gangs, or well thats unfair, i suppose you see a much reduced majority than that of gallente.
Fundamentally you are right in that lasers are good against sheilds regardless of their post-nerf state and caldari is the most popular ship, but I dont think the percentages you quote are reflective with what is being used in PVP.
...unless you want to probe and kill mission*****s....

@ OP
According to your calculations 18% = Amarr, 23% = Minmatar, 41% = Caldari... leaving 18% Gallente? So Gallente are a minority as well, yay!
I don't think so...

The Amarr ... ahhh the chosen Ones ...
I must admit thoroughly that I went Amarr for the main reason of Religion/Slavery/Ethnic Supremacy
In a RP Sense, what can be wrong in a world where your whole society revolves around you being one of god's chosen, every decree, every edict, every act HOLY? We have thralls that work for us and if they don't like it they die due to Vitoc Poisoning? In a very SLOW way ...
Big Golden ships of monstruosity that cleanse the evil with PURE LIGHT?
Now, AFTER 3 YEARS and over 48 mill. Sp's ... I can finally fly the most wicked ship ever ... The PALADIN!!! bleh 3 years of skills
Yep, no wonder everyone goes Caldari I even crosstrained missiles ...
But the amorphous roar of T2 MEGA PULSES on your Armageddon searing the hull away of some unfortunate soul is honestly worth the whole effort, and burning away all opposition in a mission with T2 MEGA PULSES on your Paladin ... ahhh Bliss
Even the Apocalypse now is truly Apocalypse Now ...
and I love my stats ... I had a good group of players back in my old 0.0 corp telling me to reroll my old char and create a true Amarr monster
The Amarr are honestly the Best. I would never create any other alt that is non Amarr ever.
