i recently noticed when i made an alt that you can only train skills on one character at a time. This seems to almost completely defeat the purpose of alts. Why make two mediocre characters when you can just make one good one? Auction your items for isk, works sort of like ebay. |

People use them to scam, to monopolize lab slots, to check market prices, to transfer items, to steal ore, to kill innocent people and even... to post with a different name on forums . Nuponi Nimedaz: "You're a pilot after my own heart, Alastra." |

In one of those time-sink games like EQ/UO/SWG how many characters on an account could you be playing at the same time to xp grind with?

That is what many think and want them gone.
Others can point out many "legimate" uses for them.
This is a very hot debate actually, there are several threads about them here if you look

Well.. I enjoy being an alt. Nothing to do all day so I can spend time on forums. Maybe I'll become CEO one day if my main decides to join another corp. I only mined once for the tutorial mission but I broke a fingernail.. these things are not for me.
Or I'll just grab a full set of implants from my main and kick her out to become the one main, since I am much better looking than her of course. Nuponi Nimedaz: "You're a pilot after my own heart, Alastra." |

Most people just use alts for scouting, a tactic which is supported and even suggested by CCP.
That's the only good reason for an alt, the other reasons, scamming, stealing etc. are bad for the game and should be dealt with. __________________

The only legitimate and "realistic" use for alts isnt allowed under the EULA (So you can't legally let your kid play with an Alt when you're not on.)
The only time I used an Alt was to explore the EVE landmarks w/o having to travel into Empire or get shot by enemies.
Other uses for Alts:
- Scouting enemy positions. I think this is sorta lame myself, as its unrealistic. Other then that I don't really mind, as its a valid and useful tactic.
- Performing kamikazi tactics in secure space against unsuspecting travelers.
- Scamming people
- Posting flames in the forums so noone will associate the stupidity you spew with your main character.

You mean a second account with a production character? Why would anybody want to split their training between their main and their alt on a single account? For one thing you'd have to waste time training the learning skills twice if you want them both to be good and that just seems like a huge waste of time for no good reason that I can see. __________________

A simple way to handle the alternate character problems, which have been mentioned before on threads of this topic, would be tag the alternates to the main account. So show info, would display the alts of the players of that account.
So if I were currently playing Kurtz, when someone does a ôshow infoö it would show my alts names, and if I were playing one of the alts, Kurtz would appear as one of my alts.
An intriguing approach to how to totally revamp the system is to allow you to operate two clones of yourself at various skill point levels.
As a clone of your main, you could perform various tasks like you can do legitimately with a alternate now, like market price shopping, moving cargo around, scouting, and so on. The ability to do naughty things like gank people in high security space would still be possible, but since it would be a clone of your main doing this, there is no hiding who you are, and will have to accept consequence of these types of acts.
