In answer to your question, that is the reason i setup my corp. Once people start to join the tax rate will be zero though sadly due to my need for standings i will only be able to accept pilots who are working for the minmatar.

Solo here, too. I was getting bored with Eve and started a corp that trains new players.. ever try it? It's great if you have nothing better to do than dispose of isk!
Now the corp has just me in it again (phew) and I talked to a guy who does the same and wanted to join. I told him I didn't think there was anything I could do for him, he said 'same here'. Sounds like a match.
So I'm asking you guys to give me a buzz and us lone wolves can pack together and solo in a ...group?...oh well.
So I'll keep the tax at 10% and join the Faction Warfare, and see if any other lone wolves wanted in. Not going to do any other recruiting tho. I figured this would be the best place to state my intentions. If enough people join, I'll lower the tax (just need it to pay the bills).

I'm solo because I'm too lazy to move out of my current home (in game that is) and/or go looking for a decent PvP corp. Also, I don't think I'd like 0.0. I kill things. I have a solo corp that I use for war deccing when I feel like.
I do not lose more ships than the average person. In fact, I cannot remember the last time I lost a ship as I have only lost like 3 in my eve career. Solo makes you pick your targets carefully, adapt, and forces you to play smarter. It does not automatically make you lose ships.

Played Solo from 2005...quit for 8 months... then came back and forth, up and down like a toilet seat. Had the same experience of joining "active" corps only to find out that a handful were on at my time zone running lvl 4 missions by themselves. Was finally satisfied when I grouped up with a corp that were in my same time zone.
I find that its lack of leadership/similar goals that contributes to this "solo" play within corps. In order to find a group of people to to play with one needs to share a similar vision or set of goals. The Leadership has to understand and have knowledge that everyone can play an active role in obtaining a corps goal.
I joined 'Solar Mining and Research' we did everything together it was amazing. As a corp we ran lvl 5s in a team of 2 Ospreys, a Drake , Scorpion, Raven. We did mining Ops/pvp'd as well as gelled as a click withing the Corp.
2 weeks later we were in operation to take a solar system in 0.0. I had the best time in eve taking that system, I lived in my Egg and Badgers and Bustards co-ordinating with a POS team Managing/fueling 20 POS' for a month and a half. That was something I enjoyed doing and found it fulfilled a niche within my alliance. I was given the opportunity to fill this and surprised the corp and alliance.
From my experience I find that a corp's leadership has to balance the line of its security and goals. It must question "Is my lack of trust holding my corp from its objectives?" When this happens members of a corp just feel like they are being taxed to feed a CEO/CFO's ISK account.
Don't get me wrong playing solo is a viable option and can be fun. But when the fun of doing things Solo becomes boring there is light at the end of the tunnel to group play. Just you'll have to be lucky or actively look for what you enjoy.

It's also why FW is moot for me. Can't participate without leaving CAS and once you do that you can't go back.

From what i understand from your post,
1. You never go out, various people have their reasons. But how the hell do you find a girl if you never leave the house?! 2. Eve is like real life, go out talk to people. Try and make friends in local, dont just join corps. 3. They have pills for being depressed...

Corp hopping is something you should avoid. especially in a game like EVE that shows anyone looking a record of your past corps. Members of an established corp are less likely to trust or open up and accept you if they see you've been in 20 corps in the past year.
That issue aside. Just pick a corp whos mindset you like, and stick with it. if you see a problem in the leadership, wait a while till you become one of the "regulars", then suggest changes, or spearhead "projects" involving other corp members.
I end up spending most of my time solo, i think most industrialist do... running factory slots and trading for minerals is pretty much solo by definition. but theres nothing wrong with earning isk solo as long as you can have fun with it as a group. ::insert witty signature here:: |

I have only been playing for about 5 months but most of those I spent solo. Main reason I even got into this game was because it reminded me so much of Elite.
1st month I spent playing alone and getting to learn the basic game mechanics, mining and running missions. I decided to join a corp, shortly after, to meet some folks and see how corps work. They were nice people but, like some have mentioned, there was hardly anyone online. Most would just log on to change skills and immediately log out... no hello or cya later. I got tired of playing solo and paying a dormant corp a percentage of my ISK and I left.
On my own again, I started to set some short-term goals for my character. It was actually pretty nice to do that for once. I used to play other MMOs where I was in leadership positions. That left no time at all to pursue my goals since I was always putting my time for the Guild, Linkshell, Clan, etc. It also worked out well that I left that corp, timewise, due to some big projects at work.
I eventually started feeling the urge to join up with some people for socializing and some cooperative fun. I spent about 2 months checking out the Recruitment channel for a good fit. Just a few days ago, one corp really caught my eye. I read their description and it sounded like a really good fit for me. I contacted the CEO, we exchanged formalities and a nice chat, and I was in.
So far, everyone has been great. The corp has some long term goals and everyone is pretty helpful.
I do think this game is pretty open-ended to cater to most types of players. I have spent $15 on far worse things. It at least keeps me from going out to bars and blowing that money on overpriced, crappy beer.
Good luck to all you Lone Wolves

I dont think anyone mentally geared to be in a crowd will ever hope to truely understand or be properly equiped mentally to function as a lone wolf.
Individuals who can be classified as Lone Wolves, simply put, want to be left alone with their own thoughts or just want to have very few bonds with indivdiuals. This could be for any number of reasons, repeated bad experience with a crowd, a belief that you can only truely rely on yourself, and so forth. Being a lone wolf doesnt mean they wont socialize either, they just are very choosey with whom they communicate with or let into their "inner circle". Naturally, this personality will translate into any game they play. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:
Players who post are like stars, there are bright ones and those who are dim.

Edited by: Dr Jamius on 29/05/2008 01:18:13 If EvE is truly a sandbox game, then playing solo should be and is a valid option. Corps can actually be rather limiting. They take taxes, are often inhabited by afk alts or people unwilling to do anything without having their hand held. Corps impose rules, expect you to be in a certain place at a given time, have you doing really boring jobs like POS repping, when it's most likely you haven't even access to the hangers or god for bid, corp mining. Corps have standings lists you have to abide by, and often contradictory to your survival if one alliance or corp has a friend who is your corp's enemy. Then there's putting up with the corp idiot who never quite understands what you're telling him, and at the other end of the scale, the corp know it all, who for instance no matter what fit you come up with, will insist on instigating an argument fueled with nerd rage about what you should have on your ship. Flying solo doesn't necessarily mean solo. It's possible over time to build up your buddy list with people you've got on with especially well whilst being in a particular corp, or players you've bumped into whilst flying around and struck up a conversation. Often some of the most fun, and profitable pvp experiences are with these acquaintances.

I agree with the OP, it can be very difficult to find a good gang of people to hang with, especially when you are a solitary human being to begin with. I personally have spent the vast majority of my time in Eve solo, partly because I am hearing impaired (and thus have difficulty using voice comms) and partly because as a solitary individual, I find it hard to just chit chat with people I don't really know.
So I guess that would be my answer as to why I play solo.

I sympathize with the OP. It is a bit depressing to logon to corp chat and find your alone.
Corp history is actually a big factor limiting ppl from joining corps nowadays because if they join the wrong one and they have to leave, do this too many times and your branded a "Corp Jumper" and your career is effectively over.
But there are lots of good things to do solo as you mentioned.
P.S. There are lots of alliances that have tons of ppl online who rarely interact with others. This a given that pirates and attackers use successfully to their advantage.

Edited by: Attalal Montt on 29/05/2008 01:55:28 Jacob Mei and Dr Jamius, you bring 2 great points.
Some people are definitely wired to survive with little to no socializing. Might seem odd to some but they go about their lives just fine. They can easily enjoy this game, regardless.
Corps can be a double-edged sword. The key is really weighing the pros, cons and goals before joining one and that all depends on your personality and outlook for this game.
That is the one thing that makes this game stand out over others. You really do have an opportunity to join a great sci/fi world that can fit any person.
By the way, I don't often participate in the forums. Most of the threads I have read involve lots of juvenile and often hostile commentary. This has been a good, clean discussion and I thank you all for it. I'm sure the OP appreciates it as well

I'm naturally a solo player, in-game and RL, a lone wolf by Jacob Mei's defination.
Quote: Individuals who can be classified as Lone Wolves, simply put, want to be left alone with their own thoughts or just want to have very few bonds with indivdiuals.
I also have a wife and 3 kids and lead a 300 man alliance. It's dangerous to generalise and expect people to conform to stereotypes. :P
I stay sane by making sure I hunt alone regularly and taking time out from coms.

Played solo for two years and created my own corp. After recruiting a few players on the same TZ, we played together for a while but some RL issues meant I was not around to do the admin and my corp slowly broke up.
Now with the same group in a corp they created. Liking it more cos I don't have to spend most of my game time doing corp admin duties. We are looking to move down to lowsec and get a POS up but for now, we are more interested in getting a fair amount of isk behind the corp to pay for fleet losses.
Still play solo a lot because that's what I prefer. I don't like having to be responsible for others safety and if I foul up, it's only me that loses a ship. I lost one ship keeping the attacker busy so my low skilled corp mate could get away, another with my pod doing PVP with a group, not in my corp that jumped through the gate when it got too much and left me alone to face a gate camp, (thanks guys, I owe you a podding for that).
I have lost several ships to 1v1 PVP which sadly is a thing of the past. I used to enjoy 1v1 even if I did get my butt kicked a few times. Now, the cowards won't even engage unless it's 3v1 and even then, one has to have a cyno to bring in a carrier if it gets too rough for them.
So there you have it. Some actually prefer to play solo and yes, we still chat on Vent a lot. We have a laugh and joke Some mine, some run missions regularly in groups, some roam in a wolfpack group in lowsec and some, like me prefer to stay solo.
So although some of what the OP says is true, there are others who solo out of choice.

For about a year I've played solo except for a 2-day stint when I realized joining that particular corp was like going to work at a second job. No thanks.
Being a free agent suits my playing style, as it mirrors my RL. I am in and have been in enough organizations and work situations to have my fill of human interaction, so playing Eve is my jealously guarded "me" time.
It is me against (or for) New Eden, I wouldn't have it any other way.

When I saw this thread, I immediately thought "There are others that have the same problem as me?".
I, too, have found that all corps I join either fall apart for different reasons or that almost the whole corp is alts or AFK. All too many times have I joined a corp only to find 3 or four players with two alts each sitting and doing missions in some high-sec system.
My gameplay nowadays mostly concist of logging on, chancing skills and probing the surrounding low-sec systems for any exploration sites and then log off when I get bored. I'd seriously love to get into a serious, small, group of players and carve out a living in low-sec, no pirating, just setting up shop in low-sec and dealing with the inherent dangers.
I'm currently looking forward to FW as it seems to cater to my (and the people's in thes thread, it seems) playstyle. I'll have to wait until the 10 June to find out, I guess...
The idea of starting a corp for lone wolves sounds like a great idea to me, and would gladly get an eve-mail from on (Hint, hint )

In real-life I am highly introverted and can only handle dealing with other people for short periods of time.
Initially when I started Eve I played solo and had no intention of joining a corp, but it soon became clear that by doing this I was missing out on the most enjoyable parts of the game.
However, the issue of not being able to find a corp with a decent amount of activity is one of bad luck or bad judgement; I've never really had a problem with that.
I reckon there are only two things you need to look for:
- Corp needs to be part of an Alliance with > 200 members - Corp needs to be based in NPC 0.0 space (i.e. syndicate is best)
If you find a corp that meets those conditions you will rarely find yourself without something to do.

Eve is a solo game. You PVE 95% of the time, to make money, to make ships, to hoard wealth which you then unleash on others. The problem isn't with soloing, the problem is if you have a problem with PVP because no matter how much you run, how far you go and how hard you go you will lose ships to wars or people suiciding. ISK in EVE has no meaning and no value if you do nothing with it.
Who cares you have billions in faction gear if all you do is farm just to farm because eventually you will have more money than some alliances put together and what are you doing with it? Nothing. Pointless, meaningless and a total waste of time. EVE is geared at PVP and you are supposed to PVE to PVP not PVE to PVE. If you want that then go and play WOW, there you can raid to raid as much as you want. CCP will not change the fact that you don't want to play with others but prefer to play on your own. There are many things you can do solo and many more in a group, PVP is just one.
EVE is a MMO and CCP have done a great job to make it that way. If you don't like it you can go and play many solo player games without having to interact with others and in which you needn't pay the monthly fee so cease the whining. Go play Diablo 2 if you want a pure solo game with multiplayer aspects.
EVE revolves around war and many love it just for that. If you haven't experienced it you should try and fight for some space, it's fantastic and there is no other MMO like it.
