Been playing EvE solo now for over a year. Yes, I have been in my share of corps. Do I want to play solo all the time? No, but as I have corp hopped around looking for 'mates' to play along side of I always get the "We have a presence 24hrs." from those who wish to recruit, yet when I do join a corp I find very few people to gang up with even within the corps alliance.
The one corp I found with lots of active people I usually get the "we're mining" answer to the "What's going on?" question when logging on. So I search for a new active pew-pew'ing corp and it's the same story over again. Many times when I see more than a few alliance/corp members on and think I may just finally get some roving gang pew-pew in, 1/2 of the logged in people are alts or AFK'ers.
Humans are a social creature. We need social interaction. However there does exist 'solo RL players' in the game of life. We, by choice, do not marry, do not have children and have a VERY small circle of friends, maybe just one or two. We would prefer to play EvE solo yet realize EvE is not designed that way and do try to get into 'gangs' of folks to be able to play without 'play' being defined as "Go solo roaming, get ganked. Go solo roaming, get ganked." However we just don't seem to have any luck finding a group of folks who share the same time-zone and activity level as we do.
So we play solo. As solo players we tend to lose many many many (yes, 3 manys) more ships than we can explody. Yet there is nothing else like EvE out there. Nothing as addictive with RL minds controlling the enemies. RL people to shoot and be shot at by. So we play and 95% of the time we play solo. 80% of that time it is not by choice.
I guess what prompted me to write this is an attempt to answer the oft repeated question I see on these forums "Why would anyone want to play a multi-player game solo?!"
I saw this question one to many times and just thought I'd make an attempt to answer it.

I disagree.
Your best bet is to find a corporation that is your TZ or within your TZ. And if it's PVP your after, narrow down your choices based on that. There are plenty of PVP corps around the place, many of them in varying TZ.
Just ask around. And after a year, I'm fairly sure you'd have some idea of alliance stuff (null-sec and low-sec) and who is what kind of a corp or TZ.

Edited by: Cutter Isaacson on 27/05/2008 13:09:50 Edited by: Cutter Isaacson on 27/05/2008 13:09:18 I have to agree with the op here. Although this toon is relatively new, I've been playing EVE since 2005 and most of that time has been spent solo.
I too practised corp hopping, always on the look out for like minded people in the same time-zone as me and always came up against the same problems as the op. If the corp was in the same time-zone, and into the same things as me, the only people logged in were afk'ers or people mining (despite the name of my corp, I dont actually mine).
So as time went by I decided that if I couldn't find a corp run by someone else that offered me what I wanted, then I would make my own corp and invite like minded individuals to join me. I suggest that the op try and do the same thing, its not expensive to start a corp, nor to mantain one and the skills required don't take long to train, and eventually you'll have a corp full of people just like you.
Good luck to you in whatever you decide to do

Edited by: Barsexual on 27/05/2008 14:12:33 From what I've noticed/experienced is that most players in carebear corps are afk/ not social. They are either solo AFK mining, missioning, or exploring. Some of these corps may have teamspeak or ventrilo but they just sit on there completely silent about 95 percent of the time.
They might help each other haul ore or complete a mission once in a great great while but MOST of the time they don't do anything together as a corp whether they are in the same time zone or not. PVE is not a multi player experience, most of the time it's not profitable to share missions, ore, exploration sites. I don't even know why they play this game.
I've noticed the opposite with pvp corps, so you must be in the wrong time zone as your corp mates or just in the wrong corp.

Why, when ppl think MMO (especially the sandbox that is EVE) they think that you have to play with a heap of buddies. Even the solo player interacts with the other players within the game world either directly or indirectly. At the end of the day an MMO is a living virtual world for you to do whatever the hell you like in, be it solo or in a group depending on the time you have to play. Personally i just play with my GF when i can get her to or just play solo (when she lets me) and thats enough for me.

I also play EVE solo and no, the game is not geared for playing solo. I play when I want to, and to have fun. I know it limits my opportunities in game, but thats my choice. I don't know why Devs pew pew rescuing the Damsel multiple times, I have fun doing it. Being one of the only Space games around, devs should realize it has a big tent full of different types of players.

Been playing off and on since 2003. CCP really focuses on the large guild subscription blocks as many other mmo's are beginning to do. I do alot of exploration right now. If they ever implement a large hull exploration vessel it will be easier but it is challenging as it is now and not unfun. People dont seem to realize that just cause we play the same game we dont have to play on the same team or a team that they should define. I play a multiplayer game to play against a person... not with them. And I think most of us solo players are waiting for one of two things. Either ccp to actually to add more solo content then just missions which could be replaced by buying any comp game without a monthly fee... you just keep a chat window open while you play and save 15$ a month. Or another mmo to come out that doesnt only focus on the big block subscriptions of guilds and clans. We are a bigger subscription base then they know because we act alone. We dont seem like a big force because we are like minnow in a pond... swimming around doing our own thing. But if something finally does come out I think it will open their eyes as all the little minnow swim toward the door.
You sound frustrated and many of us are too. Hell, I had cancelled my account till the last minute (again) this month but like you said there is nothing quite like it out there.
But someday there will be. Someday will come when they realize another clone just wont cut it. Someday someone will see how many of us dont want to be forced to play nice with others or just cant because of rl obligations. And someone will make a game that has a place for the solo and the group.
Till then it is kinda fun to be the one against many. At least for me. Hope ya find something to tide ya over.
Good luck.

Solo game in EVE isn't so bad once you learn to play 2 accounts. I played about 2 years with 1 account and then 2 years with 2 accounts, so I know the difference. It's really bad with 1 account.

You fool! That flamesuit can do nothing to protect you from my blasters! *cut to mad scientist laugh*
But I have to agree with you guys, at the moment, I'm pretty much playing a chat window with a single player game. Sure, I do love talking to people in EVE, but for $15 dollars a month I'm beginning to feel a little...dirty, because paying for internet chat is kind of like paying for phone sex...both are bad.
But I stay because I really do like the concept, and the few times I do run into other players (who want to kill me) and fight (and lose) I really think that it's all worth it.
I would echo abou having more pve content, but I see two problems with that: If you have more PVE content then the bears will never leave high-sec and you will get even less pew pew. Also: Mission grinding is mind-killing. Sure you can afk missions in your domi, but you're still not playing, so if they add more missions then they will have to drop the value of grinding lvl 4's, and I don't want to have to save up for a capship to get a steady income source.
TL:DR version Eve for a lot of us is a phone sex line on the internet. We stay because we love the concept and actual fights. More PVE content would be good, but then less Bears ever leaving high-sec. Signatures are annoying...kinda like me. |

My RL schedule is really erratic - I have a family, a busy job, and my free time is usually broken up into bits and pieces anyway. I simply can't commit to being available at any particular time, although I'm on a lot - just AFK a lot, trading or mining, sometimes doing active stuff like missions when I can.
Honestly, we should just start a chat room for solo players - that would give us the social aspect without corp pressures. Solo Players Unite! - er, not. ;)

I agree with the OP.
I've corp hopped a lot too, I have probably 15-20 corps in my corp history now, and I could write out clear and concise reasons why I left each one.
Tbh I find I get a lot more done and get a lot more action solo, even though I die a lot.
Joining a corp usually gets you stuck with people you have nothing in common with, who you are a number or a tool for, that give you no rights to do basic corp stuff, who are also afk a lot etc, the amount of corps I've been through where all I've had was to stare at an empty corp window and sigh.
They pretty much stick rules on you for everything as you are their representative apparently, they dont let you talk in local, they dont let you play by your own rules and impulses etc... They also tax the balls off you and give you nothing for it in return even though you're expected to die for them constantly and lose all your moneyz.
I never wanted a 2nd job and a 2nd manager for everything.
So if I were you, I'd make your own corp, you don't have to fill it with other people, just make your own corp so you can still do whatever the hell you want and enjoy the full features of the game. E.g Being able to dec anyone you like still, and wage your own little one man wars.
If I ever made a corp. I'd make everyone who joined director and let everyone do what the hell they want, lol, ok yes someone would come and screw everyone over with that rule at some point, but yeah it would be a nice thing.

Wait for FW, join your faction of choice and have some fun. I have been playing with it on SiSi over the weekend and enjoyed the fact that I could run missions or do a little PVP.
The best part was - when it was me against 3 I said help and I got it. Sure I died just as my support showed up but it was still fun. And there were lots of people in the militia channel trying to help others out with plexes and defending different territories. ________________________

I am thinking that the gates to the zones of fw combat are gunna be heavily camped... either by the enemy or those seeking to do they typical gatecamp that we see at the choke points to 0.0. I hope I am proved wrong. But I dont think i will be.

Nice Thread!
Does anybody know if there is a Corp that does collect Lone Wolves?
Would be a nice thing to have a corp that just connects pilots. Everybody flies alone, does what he/she likes (maybe even no or only some tax. No rules, no need to interact but always somebody that may help if trouble is around the corner. And it would raise the voice of the large group of solo players...
Does something like that exist?

TBH, I probably would join a lone wolves corp. I'm still a newbie to eve, but even now I can see I'll probably be soloing for some time, as I'm quite happy to mission run and mine, and don't really feel like gaining any in-game obligations right now.
So yeah, I too would be interested to hear if there is a soloing corp where you can meet ppl and run the occasionaly mission/whatever together. Internet spaceships ftw! |

I'm solo too atm. Been in corps and alliances, but i quit when i was playing very little. I log on now and then and do something, I tried a few other games ( PotBS AoC ) but i just cant get into them the same way as i did eve.
No doubt I'll be back playing again soon. Probably back in a corp.

My point as well,
I like to be around other pilots, but having a bad internet connection and limited time after work, it is kind of unfair to be in a corp that has to count on its members. If I am online I have to care about skills, earning money to fit my ships and so on. I just do not feel comfortable to get ships from a corp while other members are running missions /are mining 5 or more hours a day and I might be online 3 times a week. But that does not mean that IF I am online I would not talk to other pilots, help to run missions or help with fittings an advice.
Thats why I would like a Lone Wolf Corp as you would not need to do something for the corp as it is just like a pilot networking members club, that could be very powerfull if pilots suddenly feel they have to act together, like breaking camps to reach "Faction Wars" missions...

As you say, I'd feel dirty paying $15 a month for playing a solo game with a chat. But I still respect that people like this playing style, or who think they do because they have not experienced the real EVE (only my opinion again).
To solo-players defense, though, it is very very hard to find a good corp in EVE. Most people craving the corplife move towards the big 0.0 alliance-game if they life the space-action and either get sorely dissapointed by the demands put upon them here, or end up in a solo-player carebear corp.
I say solo-player here, because most of these corps I have seen are just a collection of people playing the solo-game (PVE, mining, exploration, whatever) by themselves with a nifty chat-window called "Corp". They don't work towards a common goal, they just play for themselves.
My advice would be to find a corp of about the same playing experience as you that are currently working toward a common goal. Usually this involves POSes and moving to 0.0, which generally most corps fail because they are not ready for it.
However the experience of working together in this way may just be what binds your corp together for a long time in the future where you will explore other venues together and have fun as a team.

You just need to find the right corp.
If it's pewpew you're after, try one of the 0.0 alliances - Hydra, Iron, Razor etc or perhaps one of the low sec ones - Insurgency (for now :D ), Veto, Snigg etc. --

Agreed... it's not (at least for me) - I simply can't commit to being available at any particular time, FOR any particular length of time, and therefore I'm not real useful to any corp. :)

Edited by: Nexa Necis on 28/05/2008 16:54:28 I would have to agree with the OP on some points. I always love how corps/alliances advertise heavy activity and participation and then when you join, there's only ever 2 other people on or everyone is AFK or unsociable.
A good idea might be to make your own corp. That way you can advertise the time zones you'd like and the play style you would like to engage it and then you might find more players who share the same interests.
I started my corp solo and over time people started asking to join and ever since then we've been having a blast for over 2 years. If you actively recruit, I am sure you might have a good experience as well.

if you have an active ceo, a core group of pvpers who like to pvp in your tz and an active vent = pure win. took me many corps to find one but they do exist.
i think corp ops is a great way to force people to get to know each other, and if they are in the right place or not.even taking new guys on pvp ops, especially ones that turn out good always seem to get even the silentest players chatting away on vent.
Ofc, the exception to this rule is usually those mammoth sized alliances that have zero chatter on comms. but huge chat/bonds via irc or forums.
But yeah at end of day we are all in the same fish bowl, the anonimity of it all is also a good way of breaking out of your regular shell irl and being who you want to be in game? what am i talking about i dont know anymore if your still reading god bless you and good night .............. oh look a rabbit.
