Assembler hasn't died. :)
There are now just too many noobs who can't really code and believe that their compiler
can produce code that's as fast as hand crafted assembler code. :)

Altho timing cycles on new "CPUs" would be quite hard to manage.. Especially if you need delay in several seconds

Looks like an Arduino driving a couple of LEDs. But an Arduino can be programmed to do just about anything. Hackaday.com is full of projects for Arduinos.
