Looking at the Dev Blog I started to get worried. VERY worried. CCP PLEASE don't take away our versatility.
If you "balance" ships too much you end up with "one ship, one fit" that is the only feasible / best way to fly it. Talking about "roles" and such means that you're limiting our choices of what a ship can do.
IF I WANT TO MINE IN A RIFTER LET ME DAM IT.
If you're not careful balancing these ships and taking away tiers, you'll make it so there's only one way to fly. One of the BIGGEST attractions of eve is that it's a sandbox. We choose. Not you.
TL;DR Don't put concrete in my sandbox!!!

Whats better?
4-5 ships with 1-3 fits between them in 4-5 classes each. equaling out to about all ships in EVE.
Or 5 ships that everyone uses to death for everything like we currently have.
Yes its a great exaggeration. Yet your dooms day scenario is no more realistic. |

The big problem with any MMO is that there are cookie cutter specs; and they are there for a good reason - they are the most efficient setup.
Now factor in Eve where numbers are way more important than anything else, and you have very limited choice in fits and ship choice.
Now it looks to me that CCP is trying to make more ships viable, not the reverse.
PvE, Drake
PvP Drake
.... um ... going shopping? Drake?
Take the hulk, role mining, fit for survivability, for fit for mining excellence. Or Notic, very specific role ship, but you gotta love that ship for salvaging.
Now the trickier bit is to get more ships and fits as a viable alternative for PvP - and good luck with that CCP, that's one jumbo sized can of worms :) |

Why do I have an unnatural urge to fit a Rifter for mining...
Every ship has a role, and if you take it out of that role, it won't perform so well... Rokh's are alright at mining, but they do better when sniping in a fleet, and get you a loss mail if used alone...
If each ship is too general then we are only really picking it for the skin... and having role determined by the fit...

They won't let you mine in a rifter. The rifter is their branding ship and you are ruining it.
