I with some friends wanna go pvping in lowsec to hunt pirates but we dont wanna bring our fancy Navy Ravens to play and get em blown up. SO! Were trying to bonk our heads together to figure out what would be a good cheap throw away setup gangwise.
We have 3 possibilities a 4 person gang, a 5 person gang and a 3 person gang.
5 4 3
basically what should we try to aim for "rolewise" not nessasarily ship wise. For 5 person I thinkies:
1 Scout 3 DPS 1 Tackler
OR
2 DPS 2 Tackler 1 Buffer
OR 2 DPS 1 Tackler 1 ECM 1 Buffer
Or some wierd thing where everyone can do everything.
[4] 2 DPS 1 tackler 1 Remote Buff/ECM/Tackler
[3] 1 DPS 1 Tackler 1 ECM
or
3 DPS /w some tackle
Etc.
Any suggestions on whats most efficient? On how the roles should be balanced and wat makes for a most survivable pvp anti pirate gang? Also should we stick with cruisers for cost effectiveness or just stick with frigs and destoryers? Or should we throw in a tier 1 battlecruiser just for the "amgodz big thing shootz it!" While the tacklers go around jamming and ecming them.

But srsly, take 2 battleships with remote reps, a rapier and 2 falcons. you can take on a gang up to 3 times your size. I know you said cheap, but this way you don't lose any ships so it's still cheap :) -

if you have cnrs you can at least afford some hacs/bs, if you can't well then you're not using your cnr right
bait drake + torp ravens + falcons + crow
or some ****zle like that, and if you are more specized in other races well by all means go fly that race ships. pretty much every race has buffer, dps, and tackle.
dps + tackle + ecm is a fantastic way to go.

You'll have a hard time finding pirates just hanging around to pew pew. You might be able to bust gate camps but most have an alt scout watching the other side, which means they'll GTFO if they see anything challenging mounting on the other side. Another option is to set up your own gate camps and just shoot the occasional pirate that comes in. However, many pirates fly recon or other small ships that can be hard to tackle on a gate.
My suggestion is a bait trap. Pick a good bait ship, cruiser or battlecruiser sized works nicely depending on how big of a fish you want to hook. Stick it in a belt, aways a ways off from zero, possibly even mining so if they scout you they don't think you are baiting. Next have your friends in cloaked ships nearby ready to bring the pain once your bait has them tackled. Rapier highly recommended. Also it's a huge plus if all of your gang are in different corps and alliances. Pirates get itchy if they see an easy kill but 5+ people of the same corp in local.
Once they come in and engage, have bait scram and web if at all possible. You'll want a good passive tank on the bait to keep it alive long enough for your real ships to decloak and add on their tackle. Once you have it locked down just lay into it. Recons and stealth bombers make great cloaked ships as they have very small lock on delays after decloaking, but battleships with good cloaks can work well also.
Also once the pirates make contact keep on eye on your scan. You don't want to engage if you see more then you can take coming in on your bait. Try and get the bait out(another advantage of not sitting at 0). You'll lose some bait ships so make sure it's cheaply fit and insured. But a few tech 1 myrmidon loses cost almost nothing while a faction fit recon or hic that you'll get every so often costs them a bundle.

To be honest you'd do well taking advantage of the sentries often not being against you..
1 x Rapier/tackler scout (never to get under 13km of anything) 3 x Dominix/Phoon (with neuts, remote reps and t2 dones.. one of them will play bait so plates wouldn't go amiss) 1 x Jammer (scorp, falcon etc), or another tackler if you are expecting to fight smaller ships rather than BSs and recons.

depends
you can do it with 2 ships. It's risky, but...
Even 1 Mega + 1 Falcon has a decent chance against the smaller gatecamps.
You're much more likely to get a fight with small, efficient ship combos. I've never had trouble finding pirates to fight. Pirates who 'run away as soon as you arrive' are usually doing it because said Antipirates have a blob twice their size which they couldn't hope to kill.
Sentry Guns are a wonderful thing, too, and very capable of turning a fight around. Case in point: Rokh, Sleipner and Vagabond agress my Drake under sentries. Vagabond storms into webrange and dies horribly, whilst I keep my distance from the Rokh. Sleipner then webs me and starts taking sentry fire which, combined with my missiles, it couldn't tank and is eventually exploded. Sadly the Rokh had an MWD, Point, Web and 4 Neuts fitted and got in range shortly before this, and was able to finish me off... (but it was worth it)
But as for the economy PvP option... 5 Raxes with ECM Drones ...

What ships you bring is less important than that you can fit them correctly and know how to use them.
Pirate hunting is fun and very recommendable, don't listen to the pirates about that.

Edited by: Dihania on 28/05/2008 13:54:49 1 * Cruiser (pilot with good lock times, etc.) = tackle 4 * BC (can try bonus if you want, dps, some" tank, remote rep) Cruiser gets target, BC start hitting. Have ecm drones with you and do make use of drones.
Might not be the greatest or anything, but it should be cheap enough and give you a starting point. If you lose a couple times, adjust based on what happened.
-----
2 * torp ravens 1 * bait scorpion 1 * dominix 1 * inty / hic / hac
-----
Go for n*DPS + 1*tackle. Make use of drones for ECM.

1 - Falcon (cloaked in system off gate 20 or so mins before you strike to monitor and stuff)
2 - DPS Gank fit BS (once they start to engage it jump in form other gate and enjoy)
1 - Inty or tackler of your choice
